Poignant, not the least so because this was her last Broadway role. When this was recorded, she had been thrilling Broadway audiences since 1930, for forty years. And whatever time's depredations, she still lands with a Mermanesque bang on that final note. Still thrilling!

I wonder why they never recorded the album with Laura.

I had never heard this song until today since it was not in the movie. Ethel Merman's enchanting voice is so stirring, and her soliloquy with her dead husband is so believable the way that persons later in life might think about needing some new thrill in their life!

Lotta different lyrics in this. Is it at the Goodspeed? (“Better than Bromo - you snap, you fizz”?!?!) never heard that before!

First B'way show to have a mixing board in the back of the house, thanks to Mr. Bacharach. Drums baffled for the first time, thanks to Mr. Bacharach. Just good clean sound, not over-the-top, and nothing today sounds this good. I used to stand outside the Shubert on matinee days just to hear the overture. I also saw the show five times, three during its intiial three weeks.

We are lucky to have four of the songs merman sang in PANAMA HATTIE recorded by Decca. But how great would it have been if they had already begun the tradition of recording complete shows. This song is a gem! It’s neat th at merman sang a bit of this in the Steve and Eydie Cole Porter special.

Seems like there is no evidence or trace of this original audience recording I can find in its entirety. Do you have the full recording or is this literally all there is, bar the cut song on Disney Ashman Demos?

This is great to hear. It's such a shame that they were robbed of the opportunity to do this on the original cast album. This is a real saving grace here!

The Star to Be section is a lot more laid back than in the final version it feels so slow speeding it up definitely was a good choice it helps drive the number forward

I'm currently on a very hard search to hunt down the original orchestrations for this version of Tick Tock. As much as I love the final version, this version is so interesting to listen to and I enjoy it dearly. I never knew it was originally orchestrated by Wally Harper! My last lead was just David Shire in the 1970 program for the musical in brackets. Though my sources are thinning as this is such a rare piece of music.

This is fabulous! I saw the show twice as a kid, but now, 55+ years later, I only “remember” the way this is sung on the Original Cast Album. I wonder if the Billy Rose Division at the Library of Performing Arts has a full audio recording. I know that full video recordings didn’t start until 1970. But I will ask the next time I am there!

The ‘GRASS HARP’ musical’s composer, Claibe Richardson, engaged orchestrations - executed by Robert Russell Bennett and Jonathan Tunick. Musical arrangements by J (Billy) Van Plank; dance incidental music arrangements by John Bergman; Musical Director by Theodore Saidenberg. Richardson’s neice, upon his demise in January, 2003, inherited production rights. The show cannot be performed because of the original orchestrator’s residual rights were never included in the last will and testament rights. The musical would require all new orchestrations…!

I thought Paul Jabara wrote it for the divine miss m, but she refused it. Great line of miss m at the palace attributes the harlettes’ costumes to being from “Rachel lily rosenbloom……..and don’t you ever forget it”. Love Greene and miss m when she was basically a drag performer.
