I do have a limited space and that's the reason why I bought one the problem is that this antenna is complete deaf, the SWR is good on all bands, except 80 meters, but if I can't listening nobody I can't transmit. So I decide to remove it from my roof.

Another single element antenna with a *_”magic black box”_* at the bottom that matches all bands. What sort of electronic wizardry might be in that box? (Other than a resin-potted dummy load?) I would think that by now someone would have reverse-engineered this and similar antennas and come up with a DIY clone … Is it a _”random wire monopole”?_ *73 de AF6AS*

Thinking about picking up this radio but I have a quick question. Can you use a stylist on the touch screen? I have really fat fingers and I'm afraid the small touch screen maybe too difficult to operate for things like using the keyboard to nave your frequencies.

Sometimes you want to keep the color scheme of your vehicle; with me, this was my goal. I took three Motorola antennas with chrome lock-nuts and painted them black to match my vehicle's color. It is not a difficult procedure, but make sure you use paint that is metal-free.

I get 1.3-1.5:1 across all bands, running RG8 coax. 250 watts? You don’t need it. I have made contacts all over the US & Canada, as well as Europe on 100 watts or less. 35 ft above ground? I’m a little less than 3 feet AGL.

Switzerland is wet ! Lots of rain this spring with flooding in areas. Last year was quite the opposite. Yes, although I do love the Kenwood brand, I am leaning towards getting the Icom and just needed an excuse to make that final decision. Excuse provided !😂 It would have been nice to have the APRS but as you say, there is no perfect radio. I travelled to the US a lot professionally as well as for pleasure, always loved being there. You have pretty much everything ! Thanks again and keep making those great videos.

Hi Steve, greetings from Switzerland. Enjoying your videos on the Icom ID 52 and the Kenwood D75. Just got my licence a week ago and looking to get set up. Would love to have your feelings about these two radios (id52 and D75) like if you had to choose between one or the other ?? Cheers and 73’s, John HB9 IMG

Firstly, how is everything in Switzerland? I have visited this beautiful country when I was a child, (back in the 1960s) and actually got to have skied in the Alps! (Thanks for stirring up such good memories!) Secondly, the selection between the two radios is a personal decision; I have both. They are both about the same price and equal in quality, (in my opinion.) The only difference that stand out with me has to do with the battery power. I have had the ICOM turned on for over 24 hours, (monitoring) with significant battery power loss. However, the Kenwood D-75 still has an issue with the battery draining at a faster level. Also, the Kenwood will automatically power down after a set time and there is no way that I know of to override this setting. This is a "battery saving" function that, if you aren't paying attention, (the radio will start beeping,) will shut the radio off without you knowing it. Both are fine radios, but if battery life between charges is important, I would lean toward the ICOM. -Regards! Steve

They say not to have any wires run parallel past the surge arrestors. They worry that the non-arrested wires flashover to the "protected" lines. They make surge arrestor boxes you can run remote/control type wires through (terminal style, for single conductord or non-coaxial lines). I have one that's 4 wires in, 4 wires out, but they likely make larger ones.

Grounding for lightning strikes is useless. If you get a close hit, the voltage/current will roar up the ground to your gear. I was the project engineer for the installation of outside plant and switch at Mt Cook, bought into service Dec 1969. The latest type of lightening protection was used. A severe electrical storm in April 1970 completely destroyed all plant, completely destroying the specially earthed switch. $250,000 gear gone!!!

Please watch this grounding presentation from the ARRL and you will see everything that is wrong with your station ground. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jNx1aJphs7bRnX0.html I must confess that my station was like yours until the Dayton grounding presentation. A rude awakening for me. I find most hams are doing it wrong. Also you should use bushings where the coax enters the external surge protection box. The 8 GA wire should not be connected under the mounting bolt, it should be on a separate bolt through the copper bar. It should not go through the same knock out hole as the coax on the left., it should have it's own hole. The copper bar in the shack is a "bonding bar", not a ground bar and should not be connected to the ground rod outside the shack. 73 N2SQ

I have a bunch of them including (2) 7550e's , 6550 and a bunch of HT1250's. Excellent radios to use for Ham Radio, built like a tank. I had to buy the Mototrbo CPS back a few years ago, but it is indeed free to download now. You just have to create a Motorola account first. Too program them for wide on ham radio you have to get an Entitlement which is also free. They are well worth the investment if you like a high quality piece of equipment.
