I'm autistic. And people WISH I were non-speaking.... lol. I was non-speaking til I was 5. Back in that day, there was not alot of info for those parents of autistic kids. I'm an Aspie, and it is not easy. My kids and late husband did not understand it. :(

Some people ask because lots of non speaking autistic people have a minimalistic vocabulary that although incredibly rarely used is still a vocabulary so I understand why people would ask you and I also understand why you're agitated that some people in your life don't seem to care about the child himself but only his vocal vocabulary. You need to confront those people and straight up say the words "Do you care about him as an individual or just his lack vocalizations?" And go NC with all the people who don't care about him. I'm saying this an AuDHDer.

I feel like a better question would be "how does he communicate?" Everyone communicates, and that would show so much more care for your son than holding him to a metric of neurotypical expectations.

My sister has celiac and all our family dinners were gluten free. No wheat flour in the house. We could then have gluten for lunch or breakfast when we wouldn’t be using the whole kitchen. Made things simpler, and she only encountered cross contamination post diagnosis (she was diagnosed before she turned 2) about twice? Unmarked gluten meatballs in the freezer is the only one I remember.

So because YOU have something their well being should be affected? Growing children NEED gluten it’s a crucial part of their diet so because YOU can’t have it they shouldn’t? That’s so unbelievably selfish and I hope you never have kids.

It's just different than a neurotypical kid. Some autistic people can't handle physical touch, others like me can handle it only from those given permission to touch. I've never met an autistic person that didn't have some way of showing they care. My daughter never liked touch much. She always brought me pebbles to show love. In fact at 22 she still brings me pebbles.
