Balerman saved my bacon with his Christmas gift to KZfaq listeners on how to time a 338 baler. Wish I would have known about Balerman when I tore apart the 338 pickup reel. Tine bars were sloppy in the end spiders but the new spiders were just as worn. Could have left it alone for many more years.

I just got my driveshaft and pinion, bevel gear, bearings changed out, cleaned the chains. Somehow got it out of time even though I had it all locked, this makes it immensely easier than looking at the manual and figured out the bs it is spewing. Will try it.

I remember when I was 4 to 8 years old around 1958 to 1962, Because those balers are so differently built with the thing stuffer arm going vertical towering way up in the air. I definitely remember my dad had one of those built like that. How many different companies built them like that besides international & New Holland? I have no idea what brand he had. other than it was red, & had a motor on it. I thought he didn't like it, probably, wasn't a New Holland, as you painted a picture of it being a great baler. He had trouble with his. It's just so long ago. He usually had everything McCormick, But for some reason bought a Massey Ferguson #9 when he upgraded. It was not one of those that never missed a bale , of coarse my dad might not of tied the the next bale of twine perfect . But it tied pretty good. There kinda a rare those little #9 massey I only seen 1 or 2 on market place I can't believe all the good points you made about it, the Super 77. I Like that little door in the back. Would that make it easier, to change. or sharpen the knives? Like how you don't have to crawl under neath the baler to thread the needles . I didn't know the proto super 77 type was at the end of the production

I did some research, I guess my dad used a #3 Massey Ferguson . Instead of a pick up tire it had a pivot/ metal/slide/along thing. And spotted a Massey Harris vertical hay stuffer baler. Now I know of 3 brands that made one. I know there must be a nick name for those. lol

I seen in the manual that when timing the baler there needs to be a measurement of 2 1/2 inches from the needle to the face of the plunger head when the needle is flush with the tip of the lower bale groovers. Is that measurement correct when the needle is 2 1/2” ahead of the plunger head or behind? By making sure that the timing points all line up, do the measurements even matter at that point?

@@andrewanderson2947 who wrote the Manuel? Who is selling you parts & service? The Manuel is nothing more than a sales brochure for the service department. If the manual truly fix the Baler, the company would never sell parts and then never sell service.

My first baler was an AC 302 with the 444 thrower. The baler was in beautiful shape, but the knotters were junk. No one had any idea about parts or repair & it ended up going down the river.... all the way to Oklahoma. Some collector bought it & picked it up on his way through from the big AC show in Minnesota. If memory serves.... the 444 was the last baler model they sold, which would have been from around '68 - '72.
