I don’t hate Rics. I’ve owned two - a 4004 and 4003s/5. They’re not well made compared to similarly priced instruments. They did sound great but were very variable from gig to gig and in my experience the necks were unstable. In particular the 4003s/5 has a very weak B string and the body sculpting was poor- the “edge” made it very uncomfortable to gig with. They do look great but that’s not enough for a £2,500 instrument 🫤

Thanks for the video! There is very little information on these basses on KZfaq. And I just can't figure out the reason for the hatred towards these basses. Just recently I bought myself an LPB-2 (1996) and damn it, it's an awesome bass! I wouldn't say it's heavy at all. Compared to my Bubinga Warwick Corvette, this bass weighs ok. But the most important thing is its sound! It fits perfectly in the mix, the sound is very punchy, moderately bright (exactly as bright as needed). At the same time, the lows are very clear, not muddy.
@bass-hiroshimanick253422 күн бұрын
Thanks so much I appreciate the kind words and positive comments. Those Gibson LPB-2 basses are beautiful instruments, you're lucky to have that 1996. I didn't realize the Warwick Corvette bass, also a very nice bass, was so heavy.
@resistenceisfutile21 күн бұрын
@@bass-hiroshimanick2534 Well, only bubinga corvettes are heavy. Bubinga is a very dense and hard tree, which is why it weighs so much. Ash corvettes have normal weight.

😊 I have a 2006 4003. It's a bass that sounds somewhat different from both the precision and the jazz. At 9 lbs, it's a little heavy too. However, with a wide strap, it is not bad at all to play for a few hours standing up. It sounds good, cuts through the mix well, and I get tons of compliments on my Fireglo's tone and look. If you are a good slapper, and this genre appeals to you, I think it sounds pretty good as a slap bass. However, it doesn't sound like a jazz or a precision. If you are like me, and haven't learned the slap technique, it will not sound good on this bass! I use either flats or tape wounds and that doesn't help the slap sound either. Also, if you are interested in buying one of these basses, first talk to a luthier who has worked on many Rick bases, or call Rickenbacker and ask them to explained thoroughly the double truss rod system. It is very good for next stability, but it is very different from a single truss rod. I have owned this place for 18 years and I think I'm only now understanding the double truss rod system. As I said, the neck is very stable and I live in a dry climate, so I've never really had to adjust it much. But a good working knowledge on the system with benefit you greatly.

I got a Univox Stereobass, which is an exact lawsuit copy of a 77 rickenbacker, and a luthier told me “these are as good as if not better than the real ones, you will not see these often for that reason.” It’s fun to play but very difficult, love the sound for playing old school rock and roll. Not exactly a bass I’d want to use for metal though, I don’t know how some bassists have used one for metal.

Question: that Mapleglo of yours, which year is it? Why is it that the newer Mapleglos are not quite as yellow/cream color as the older ones? Do they all age like this? I absolutely am obsessing over the color of your 4001. The new ones seem more light oak than maple.
@bass-hiroshimanick2534Ай бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and asking about my Ricks, I appreciate it. My Mapleglo 4003 is from 2011. I don’t really know why newer Ricks might look lighter but I can tell you that when I bought my 4003 new in 2011 the binding was a very bright white and the Maple was much lighter. I started noticing the maple getting darker and the binding turning yellow probably within the last two years. I hope that helps a bit.

The Owner's manual is a little different. It says to adjust the rods with the strings tuned to pitch while applying pressure like you did. The stings should just touch the frets as you lock the rods with the adjusting nuts. VERY IMPORTANT adjust altering rods after tightening no more than one eighth of a turn each.
@bass-hiroshimanick2534Ай бұрын
You are correct you can leave the strings at full tension when adjusting the two truss rods. Thanks for watching.
