This was an awesome story! You and your female peers are true pioneers. I feel like you deserve more recognition for your feat. Did you ever write a book about your experience? With a little marketing I bet there are some big time youtubers who would like to interview you as well, it may be a good opportunity to talk about your book! Not that its all about book deals or money but ive never heard of you until now and its a shame. You deserve a seat in history. Best regards and thanks for paving the way!

My father, Utilitiesman Second Class Robert Manke, was one of the US Navy Sea Bees to winter over with this expedition. He is pictured in the yearbook slide and in the slide showing the raising of the flag. The story I was told about that slide is that they chose the oldest and youngest of the military personnel for Colors detail. Chief Davis, being the oldest was assisted by my father. Dad was all of nineteen years old at the time. His Snow Cat, "BarBara", which was named after his girlfriend (future wife and my mother) back home is also in a couple slides. He has also put together a slide show presentation that shows more of the Navy's side of the story. It was great to see the same story from the civilian perspective.

I am reading they found 28 ancient viruses some 15,000 years old in the ice, which are harmless to humans do to "chemistry of nucleic acids extraction". I hope those viruses don't have beer... you know, like: "hold my beer".

I just ran across what I believe to be mummified wood, Virginia. Any chance you would take a look at some pics?
hello, I'm making an educational film about our trip to Greenland and I'm talking about the ice fjord of ilulissat, its history, its hindsight, its dynamics and its dangers. In your videos, you have an extraordinary sequence of an iceberg velage with tsunami at the mouth of ilulissat. I would need about one minuts to illustrate and explain the velâge and tsunami of the fjord. So can I pick up your video for my film. Of course the authors of the video will be quoted in the end credits with a link to your video on youtube. Waiting for your answer, I wish you a good end to the day. I wonder what the food web looks like in the immediate environment of this midge. Is it perhaps a simple interaction of predation between the bacteria and the midge or is there something more complex going on? We know now that there are several species of nematodes and springtail relatives living in Antarctica in their own little micro habitats. I doubt it but I wonder if there's perhaps any interaction between them and these midges at any stage of their lives.

I was there almost 20 years latter after the main under snow base had closed out due to the ice movement and Byrd was by then a very remote gas station. We used the old base as an unofficial supply base as it had been abandon at the end of summer and was equipt for the following winter. Was Carl Dish there at your time.

horsebee1 Carl was there in 1965. Why do you ask?

I over-wintered at "New" Byrd in 1963-64. New Byrd = the new construction at the end of the slide show. Carl (sometimes Karl) Disch was my replacement as Ionospheric Sounding / Forward scatter operator. Unfortunately during the following winter, Carl apparently became lost while travelling from the Radio Noise facility to the main station (maybe a mile or so from the main station) and the Great White Mistress claimed another soul. I found Brecher's lecture especially interesting because in 1963/64 we would occasionally visit Brecher's his "Old Byrd station". Nothing was visible above the surface except the remaining platform of Brecher's Aurora tower. There was a trap door on the platform that provided entry to the old station. Some passageways and rooms were still open, but most of those barrels and support beams were crushed. Lots of goodies were left behind when Old Byrd was abandoned: M&Ms, Ritz crackers and some excellent steaks. We felt like treasure hunters.

@@jdisch644 Because almost 15 years latter I believe that I in a strange way met Carl. We were in the old base exploring and found the medical room which was very distinctive as at one end there as a rack of audio tapes, each one being a description of a medical procedure. On one side of the room was a bed all made up ready for someone to clime into and on the bed was a pile of photos what looked as if someone had been looking through them and tossing each one down as they had finished. They were all B&W composite photos of the Mid Winter Party each one consisting of the guests table setting with their name, a photo of the person arriving (in tuxedo) and a third of the same person at the end of the party many of whom had clearly enjoyed themselves. On the very top was three copies of the same photo of Carl Disch. You must remember that this was the first trip down for that season so you imagen my surprise when the bloke with me who had also been there the previous season commented that he didnt remember them being there the last time he was there. I later checked this with another Kiwi who had also been there the previous season when I got back to New Zealand. He remembered the room due to the tapes and also stated that he did not remember the photos being there. I have often wondered and to this day still have one of those photos.
