Brilliant videos How do you keep them goshawks so feather perfect? I got a Harris when I bow him he smashed himself up. His better now he freelofted. I heard the gos was a lot harder to keep

Experience in management is something that improves with time, I prefer a high perch on the weathering lawn and use a drum perch within the overnight mews. Goshawks, like all birds can be difficult to manage, but sometimes with a couple of very simple alterations and care, you can make a big difference.

It's a blast teaching a young Goshawk, "The Sport of Falconry."
@goshawker15 ай бұрын
Have to agree OSH, the thought of creating something proficient from a raw material by offering experiences designed to educate a hawk towards positive results.... its a very addictive hobby. This young hawk was bred by a friend who was flying her until he suffered knee injury. Now another friend has guided her through the end of the season and she's progressed nicely.

@alisontaylor7511 The pointer 'Ruby' is owned by my friend Ian who is flying the hawk, she's a great staff member steady little worker and goshawks are traditionally flown over pointers.

Thanks TNT, keeping them white is the hard part, but they are certainly a lot easier to see on the footage than the more typical coloured goshawk. They have become a lot more common in the UK over the last 10 years.

What is this? It is not a White Goshawk. OK it is a goshawk that happens to be mostly white. The White Goshawk Accipiter novaehollandiae lives in east and north Australia. It is pure white, without any pale grey in the plumage. It is a variant of the Grey Goshawk. However the bird in this film looks sort of like a partial albino of the Northern Goshawk as it has some bits of grey markings around the head and upper parts that look like a washed-out version of that. Also, the scenery, the pheasant prey at 0:44 and the use of falconry suggest to me that this is not in Australia.

Albidus goshawk - flown in the UK
@philipveerman75267 ай бұрын
Thanks for your answer. I don't know a word "albidus" but I take it as albino, which is what I thought, as it shows signs of being a Northern Goshawk of Europe. Anyway, it isn't an (Australian) White Goshawk, which is a different species, a normal colour form and not an albino. @@goshawker1
@goshawker17 ай бұрын
@@philipveerman7526 She's not an albino. Albidus is a subspecies of the northern goshawk, originating from the most northern areas of their coverage, with a stronghold in Kamchatka. Certainly not the Australian type or in Australia and predominantly nicknamed white goshawk in a simple way for those people searching for that type within the falconry world. Hope that helps explain.
@philipveerman75267 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comments. I understand the first points you make (though I did not know that). The Australian White Goshawk can also be called the white morph of the Grey Goshawk (but that is a long name) so we tend to just say white or grey according to what it is. It is not a species that people see often. They exist together in some parts and do interbreed. Falconry is not legal in Australia. It is only done by very few people in order to rehabilitate or care for raptors that are injured or whatever, in training for release or keeping alive if not releasable or for a few specialised purposes (like falcons to shoo birds away from airports). So falconry is not legally available in Australia for sport or entertainment or hunting. . @@goshawker1

How do you get her so fit
@goshawker18 ай бұрын
It's all a balance of multiple aspects I guess, but provided all controllable aspects are delivered and influenced aspects are as influenced as possible, then its just a fitness program delivered by regular hunting and hunting substitutes like an electric drag lure. Thanks for your compliment, she's only just starting to achieve a decent fitness now.
