I recall Noel Edmonds being MC at a meeting at Wembley, c. 1975, when Stuart showed a clean pair of heals to top rally, Formula 1 and other drivers, going the wrong way around the track in identical Mark 1 Escorts. I think Denny Hulme was the F1 driver and the rally guy could have been Timo Makinen. He couldn't shut up about it on his Radio 1 breakfast show the following Monday.

Was wolfie driving Close's car ? I used to go to a pub in Starbotton near Kettlewell and could hear close testing at his premises just behind. I remember mellows car had to have an extra crank in the cab side so he could get in, he was a big lad !

I used to love Hyde Road, you could guarantee that at some time during the evening, there'd be a blues and twos going past on the main road ! Best racing though, much missed. A lot less stoppage than modern WFs , a better track ?

Love the old tanks! No tyre problems, put on what ex rally tyres you can. Always liked Northampton as a tarmac, I know it went shale to replace Coventry but i miss the tar, especially F2s were spectacular there. Amazing how many names are still in the sport, all beit different generations. I miss the Smith, Wainman rivalry! Come back Andy!

Ahhhhh …. Those bygone days when you could go to the Speedway or the Stockcar Races and then go into Belle Vue Funfair and really enjoy an amazing evening …. All gone now helped by the ineptitude of the Manchester Council … we had a World Class Venue … an amazing historical site … the councillors of Manchester City Council in the 1980’s should be absolutely ashamed of themselves …. It should have been declared a grade 2 listed site and saved for future generations to enjoy … I worked at Belle Vue for the best 8 years of my life …met my wife there and we’re still together 39 years later … I left before it closed down because I could see the writing on the wall … especially when Trust House Forte took over and put a bunch of Hotel Managers in charge … they couldn’t run a Piss Up in a Brewery and they totally destroyed Belle Vue …. Sad …. Sad …. Sad ….☹️😕😥🙁

After the Bradford football stadium fire, where a small fire ripped through a wooden stand so fast, many people lost there lives, many others long term injures all wooden stadiums then come into question. Most of the Bigger british stockcar stadiums were so had no chance.Unless massive ground up rebuild and investment.Alot had greyhound tracks too and animal welfare made the front pages at the time.Wasnt nice. But i still go eatbourne watch some stockcars.

I remember when I was a kid in the 1970s going home on Sunday nights from my Nans house in Old Trafford back to Stretford, passing by White City and seeing the greyhounds on the arch, lit up in a sequence to make it look like they were running, I never got to see a greyhound meeting there, however I used to ride my bike around, after it was left like it is on this video, a fascinating place to play in, as a teenager in the mid 80s

I remember 1973 at Harringay when Smith started at the back as reigning World Champion having retired at the Coventry semi, finishing about 50 yards behind Dave Chisholm who had started on his own at the front after Mick Noden's withdrawal and had no back markers to deal with until about halfway through the race. The finest piece of race driving I have ever seen and I'm convinced to this day that Smith would have caught Chisholm had the race been over the standard World Final 30 laps instead of 25. To be fair to Chisholm his execution of a nudge on Smith on the 27th lap at Belle Vue in 1975 after tailing Smith from the front for the entire race was perfectly timed. Smith would have been expecting it a lap later. I haven't been to a stock car event since 1980 and I can't imagine there is anything like that level of excitement today. Occasionally I watch a few laps of Formula 1 on TV and quickly doze off. There is no comparison to BRISCA F1 of that era for thrills. I once saw Smith coming over the hill at Cadwell Park with all four wheels of the ground and flying for about 25 yards. Beat that Verstappen.
