Words to live by. Explain more if asked but otherwise yes/no answers are enough. Yes but = no. When they say "what no?", that's when you explain the but part.

There's a difference between over-explaining to justify yourself and over explaining because the fact that you interpret everybody to be idiots I might over explain myself because of the fact that most people to me are idiots

I have 2 bonded male cats, but your dog is adorable! ^_^ Although I understand that AI has not reached "Skynet" levels yet, and can be found almost everywhere now in some form, the part that really bothers me is in regards to artwork. I draw. And paint. By hand. Years of practice. I do not want AI using my artwork to learn how to steal my artwork, or anyone else's. A comic-book artist working for DC Comics had his covers recently removed for using AI, and rightly so. That said, I have heard of the Pomodoro technique, and I certainly need to start utilizing it in order to be more productive.

Oh my gosh Binky says hi!!! I love cats! Also agree soooo much.. my fear is how AI will keep impacting the arts :(

Bagels are so good in the morning! It used to be my uni goto breakfast for when I was in a rush. Nowadays I opt for greek yogurt, granola and fruit for a solid protein alternative. But totally second the bagel choice for goto breakfast foods :)

I totally resonate with what you are saying! Regarding bad vibes from some people (generally young), and searching for good mentoring. My best learnings come from separating myself from the sheep gossipping flock and getting closer to senior roles, especially women, who could give me advice on both social and technical skills from a mature position. You end up becoming more efficient and focused. Also, salary negotiation: we women are TOO HUMBLE, and end up getting waaaaaaay less paid than our male work colleagues! some of them even less experienced or educated. One thing we have to learn from corporate men: have self-confidence even when there is no factual basis for it.

How far back should I go on my resume? Also, I have about a 1.5 year gap in my resume when I took care of my terminally ill mom. Should I leave that out and explain it later? It's taking up valuable real estate on my resume trying to keep it to 1 page. Thanks!

@EmilyDurham - So I have a question here - let’s say if you are In a techno - functional role where as you mentioned Recruiters have only 5-6 seconds to skim through the resume, would it not make sense to have the technical skills at the top between the bio and work experience rather than in the additional experience section at the bottom?

I still remember being in my teens at a job interview for tutoring. I was doing okay, not fantastic or anything, but then he asked this question and I thought for a second, chickened out, and said "I'm a perfectionist." The disappointment on his face was palpable. I learned instantly that that's the wrong way to answer that question. Ever since then, I've been honest about my issues with time management and emphasizing how I take steps to do better.

Thank you for providing a wonderfully animated and informative primer for resumes, Emily! I appreciate your enthusiasm, and your "sitting on the floor" casualness stands out from the standard "sitting at the desk" routine some others may use! ^_^ I love the paintings you have on your wall as well.

Hey Emily! Fellow HR girly here🫶🏼 thank you for boosting confidence so many people’s careers and shedding light on something so many of us experience but don’t often talk about. I love when you use real life examples from your prior positions, would you do a video giving more examples of distinguishable milestones/conversations/hardships in your career and describe what you learned and how it shaped your growth in the workplace?
