What an extraordinary desert experience. Planning to move to Baja California, get myself one of these beasts and ride the coastline off-road. Well done guys!

Beautiful !! Where can I get one of those 41 liter tanks ?
@SaharaOverland
@SaharaOverland 10 ай бұрын
They were the very last Acerbis ones (ex Dakar XR650R?) even back in 2003. Fyi I would never get such a big tank for a carb bike again. Way too much weight high up. Efi with lift pump could be different.

I have always use soft bags because they are better holding hits when you drop the bike to the ground, maybe like you said top hard box and side soft bags or luggage, but I has always use soft bags for top and sides

The three major things you must do to that bike first thing get rid of that smog crap second thing put a FCR carburetor or electron and change the exhaust and if you want to add icing to the cake you would put that bike in the suspension shop and have it Beefed up and revolved for carrying all that luggage. I own a 2007 XR 650 L and I have done quite a few mods to transform that bike it will never be the top dog but it will always do the job.

Can you add a kickstarter to a XR 650L just for emergency purposes?

Brilliant.. Just saw this video. Well its great to see that there is more than one person out there, that's almost as nutty as myself.... Thanks for the practical advice, experience, ans last but by no means least, a sense of humour ... :) Best of luck to you both in your adventures.

Love those old Land Rovers my old neighbour had one from 1978 and it worked everyday without fail up to 2011 , the only reason it started going wrong was wear and tear to mechanical components such as worn out Turbo, worn out Water pump, Radiator, Head Gasket etc but original parts lasting that long was a mnor miracle in my opinion lol

A couple of 10" pressed-steel angle tent pegs ("sand pegs" in camping parlance) pushed down through the front "rung" of the Bakkie Mats can help prevent then slipping backwards - it doesn't always work but is worth trying. Clip long lengths (7-8 metres for front, 4m for rear) of quality paracord from a rear tow eye to the Bakkie Mats so you drag them as you drive out - you can then keep going with good momentum for a few hundred yards in long fields of powder sand. (or a higher robust lashing point if you have one eg: a quality heavy duty expedition roofrack - be careful you don't rip it off!! - the higher it is the more it raises the drag angle and lifts the mats up as you drag them forward, preventing thme catching in the sand) This saves stopping and walking back to get them BUT - you MUST lay the paracord *well clear* in big loose open loops around the sides away from the vehicle or they easily wrap up on driveshafts (always carry a good knife for mishaps like this) Cheap paracord may snap under the strain of dragging the mats - they weight a ton - especially in the hot sun! You can use paracord on aluminium or plastic sand ladders too but you may need to use a higher attachment point to drag them to prevent them catching in the sand and acting like and sand anchor. To prevent metal ladders cutting the paracord use a carabiner or small shackle through a hole.

Clive Webb - I read your points with interest Clive. Other followers may be interested to learn that the old 'Fireball Deathtrap' Carawagon has taken me to Libya five times and most of the European Countries in the intervening 16 years. Next year I am heading for the Balkan States and maybe some Island hopping around Greece. I have changed nothing except the clutch. I would argue that it is a case of knowing one's truck. . Been anywhere yourself Clive? I see no posts. Maybe an armchair adventurer.......

Hi phanindra, it took 9 days with an acclimatisation rest at Rumtse and a couple of lifts over some passes to Khoksar before Rhotang (for Manali). From Khoksar junction we took a jeep to Kunzam La and then cycled Spiti Valley to Shimla - an amazing ride. I suppose Khoksar over Rotang to Manali is 1-2 days.

....except for the heavy sand, I did the rest in a 2 wheel drive 1973 VW Westie Camper in the winter of '75. Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco.....and drove to Moscow, too. Bought the Westie in San Mateo, CA...to NY...across the Atlantic on the FRANCE, the channel by Hovercraft ....then to Moscow....back to Sicily, across to Tunis....and on we went, as I said. GREAT ADVENTURE...just me and the wife ! We were gone from The States for 2 1/2 years !

...in a VW camper (Westie) I drove from San Francsico to Moscow....and while we were over there, we drove from Tunis to Morocco,,,the best 3 months of my life was in the Sahara.!!! ..1974 to Moscow...Sahara in 1975 ! No equipped caravan of vehicles for us....my wife & I,alone ..........................and a little bit crazy...:):) Big regret was not getting sponsors.....we were gone from California from May '73 to Dec'75.

you and your wife are adventerous people Originally I come from Nador(northern part of Morocco) and If I would go to th sahara I probably would go with at least 2 or three terrainvehicles in case one vehicle breaks down . I've rerad about trips from Morocco to Dakar and the landscape is truly amazing . Southern part of Mauretainia you wil start to see boabab trees , how amazing is that ? Just a brotehrly advice , next time please go with at least 2 vehicles and some friends . peace be with you
