DDG, I'm an old horse so I'll try to make it short. Back in '80-'81, a good friend of mine and I, decided to try to break into racing. We had a limited budget. I wanted to get into NASCAR but he was the best 4 speed shifting guy I'd ever seen. Outside of the story of the car that I built for the project ('68 Cutlass S, 350 4 speed) the secret to what made him the best at being a 4 speed shifter for drag racing, was that he had spent several years doing motocross bikes. In the end, he broke the car and I decided I needed to do college and find a job. No NASCAR or Stunt driving for me. I wish I had made a different decision back then. Take note, UT spent a fair amount of time on bikes and still does. They're small and helluva lot cheaper to practice on. I like that you're a 4 speed guy and guess what; the 4 speed guy who knows how to build it and drive it, is going to shock the hell out of people. Good for you sir! Be safe and thanks for reaching back in time to make the point. My buddy was 18 back then and I've seen nobody as good since. Go man go!

Many thanks for a great video. I've got a Mopar charging problem I hope you can help me with. I'm having alternator problems on a 1974 Jensen interceptor. These cars came equipped with 440 Dodge running gear. The problem started when I was losing battery voltage To correct the problem I purchased 100 amp rebuilt alternator for 440 Dodge. I followed your advice on troubleshooting by doing the following. I) confirmed my v regulator was well grounded, 2 )I confirmed that my ignition switch is powering the voltage regulator. At rest the battery is 12.70V. The alternator is producing the following V's when disconnected from the system, idle 10.5 to 11.9V . 1000 rpm 14.6 to 15.6, 1500 rpm 18.9 to 19.2V. Once I connected the alt to the system with a shunt from alt to battery the voltage at idle 12.35V, . 1000 rpm 12.36, 1500 rpm 12.6V, 2000 rpm 13.5V. What can I do to increase the volts at idle and 1000 rpm.

Better yet mopars version of the El camino, the Rampage, as a custom Cafe hauler. I'd watch every second lol.

Jamie, an unrelated question of I may; bit of a back story first. Recently I had the pleasure of driving an authentic (apparently) 1970 Challenger RT 440 converted to an auto tranny, thing is it had issues like pinging, ignition issues, horribly adjusted drum brakes, squeaks all over (got too used to body on frame saloons I guess). Yes I am bragging a little, but there is a point to this I swear. My question is; are E-Bodies, in general, reliable vehicles? Sure these are 50+ year old cars that are bound to have issues related to age, but are they prone to failures? I'm seriously considering devoting a part of my life to purchasing (hopefully) a 1970 Cuda, preferably one that's at least partially restored, but I was told by someone with more experience than me to buy a Chevy, as they are in general almost bulletproof, while Mopars are generally maintenance hogs. Is that true?
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Күн бұрын
Ridiculous. Lol. Chevy people are mistrusting of Mopars for reasons I’ll never understand. I’ll take the E-body, thanks. But there is no such thing as a “reliable” 54 year old car. There will be issues - that’s part of the experience. But they are rarely serious issues. If you truly want an old car, get ready to work on it and figure out problems. That’s what it’s about.

My grandfather gave me his 70 Dude for graduation. (97) It has an early (no marker) front clip. That was changed after a drunk neighbor lady hit us head on when I was 11ish. Grandpa saved me from eating the dash but he hit the wheel hard enough to bend the steering wheel with his belly. It turned all kinds of bruise colors. Anyway, when I got it it had been setting for 10 years, the 318 was all but seized up. After 2 weeks of turning the crank back and forth every day with a healthy dose of trans fluid/diesel mix it finally turned freely. I rebuilt the 2bbl carb and drove it for 3 years. It started running rough me and dad narrowed it down to a timing issue. The more we messed with it the worse it got. We finally gave up pulled the motor and then I picked up a 78 newyorker. Never got back to the Dude. I still have it. I’d like to throw a low-tech late model magnum in it at some point. If being a Dude wasn’t rare enough the top of the cab never was painted to match the stripe. I have seen a couple the same way. A blue and a green. Mine is burnt orange/white stripe. Here is a fun fact. The 2wd front spring pack has more arch than the 4wd. So if you need to lower a 2wd or raise a 4wd you can swap top springs in the pack. It’s like a 1-2” difference.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Күн бұрын
Wow! That’s nuts. Incredible that you’ve still got it, those are neat trucks. I am aware of the front spring difference. When I was lowering my gold truck, I did lots of reading on the subject and learned that. But I still ended up doing it the free and hacky way.

Not covered in the video, but I bought a 80s Dodge truck once that would crank but not start. They had given up on it. The small body ground to the battery had pulled out of it's ring terminal and fallen down kind of out of sight. I reattached it and the truck was perfectly fine. Ran like a top.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 2 күн бұрын
Interesting. I wouldn’t have included that as a rule, because I have had plenty of cars with a missing body ground that by all rights should have issues like that, and yet don’t. And sometimes the symptom is different. Our van, for example - it had (still has? I don’t think I’ve fixed it) a ground terminal issue where the body ground comes out because it’s a hair short. When that happens, it starts and runs fine - but doesn’t charge. Reconnect the body ground and it charges. I still haven’t figured out how that makes sense.
