Microsoft originally planned to have a large temporary holding area in the taskbar as the "tray" before it was scrapped. On Windows 95/98 the panel near the clock was managed by a program called "systray," which is how it got the name. One of the authors later wanted to correct the name to "notification area," but the cat had long been out of the bag by then. You can return a launch toolbar and a traditional look of the taskbar on Windows NT6.1 using a program called "7 Taskbar Tweaker" (not a good name, and it clutters the task manager unless renamed). You can create new toolbars in a convenient location on disk, that work the same as the Quick Launch toolbar. Microsoft the reinvented the wheel by combining the icons with buttons of running programs through the process called "pinning," which confuses me because a running program and its pinned launch button look almost the same.
