I bought the Beautiful South's bass amp from Dave via ebay. He listed the full backline when the band split. Wish I still had it, Ampeg SVT 2(non pro, gear geeks)

Heard Paul talk about about this song ,and say, "it was about a woman he was really good friends with, but obviously attracted to her as well," but if he made a hit on her and it didn't happen ,then he'd probably lose the friendship.

I got London 0 Hull 4 in my stocking Christmas 1986. I wasn't politicised back then (I was 14) but it and Talking with the Taxman by Billy Bragg, opened my eyes. 2:00 agreed. I've never heard it put that simply before. If we owned our public services again, I think it would make people happy. And we all did that with Peel. I did not know he grew up in Chipstead! Just down the road from me! Those Surrey County Council school books!! OMG! Jeeeez he mustve felt like he was in a vacuum being in Surrey and being pro-Union etc. Adi is amazing. Nothing but love. no jealousy. What a lad Paul is.

@@jamesthecat hi James, I didn't write the songs. I created off the top of my head. Heaton scribbed the songs there and then. That doesn't make him the owner. I had a fatal RTA in September after meeting with him in Rotterdam. I had skull impact damage that shut down my memories for 35+ years. Now I remember again as my brain repaired it self.

I went to a Housemartins-gig in Oslo in the autumn of 1986, when I'd just turned 18. I was a huge fan. Some month before, Maggie Thatcher had visited Oslo, causing a riot that was widely reported in the UK-press. «Riots ruin Oslo visit» (The Daily Mail), «Few friends for Thatcher in Norway» (The Sunday Times) og «Pro-IRA riot in Oslo» (The Daily Telegraph). I remember Paul Heaton bringing up the incident during the concert and extending his warmest gratitude for the way Maggie was welcomed in Oslo, dedicating a song for the Iron "Lady": Drop down dead (26:15).

@@TUO___ Coal mining employed 4,000 workers at 30 locations in 2013, extracting 13 million tonnes of coal.[51] The UK Coal mines achieved the most economical coal production in Europe, according to UK Coal, with a level of productivity of 3,200 tonnes per man year as of 2012, at which point there were 13 UK Coal deep mines.[47] The three deep-pit mines were Hatfield and Kellingley Collieries in Yorkshire and Thoresby in Nottinghamshire.[1] There were 26 opencast sites in 2014, mainly in Scotland.[6] Most coal is used for electricity generation and steel-making, with its use for heating homes decreased because of pollution concerns. The commodity is also used for fertilisers, chemicals, plastics, medicines and road surfaces. Hatfield Colliery closed in June 2015, as did Thoresby, and in December 2015, Kellingley, bringing to an end deep coal mining in the UK. The occasion was marked by a rally and march attended by thousands of people.[52] The closure of coal mines left the affected communities economically deprived, unable to recover even in the long run.[53] In 2020, the Woodhouse Colliery became the first approved new deep coal mine in the United Kingdom in 30 years.[11] The plan was criticised by some MPs and environmentalists due to the incompatibility of coal mining with government commitments to reduce carbon emissions. The mine is proposed by West Cumbria Mining and plans to extract coking coal from beneath the Irish Sea for 25 years.[54][55][56] The Cumbria County Council Development Control and Regulation Committee approved West Cumbria Mining plans for the mine in October 2020 for a third time.[57] In January 2021 Secretary of State Robert Jenrick refused South Lakeland MP Tim Farron's request to call in the plans for review.[58] Farron described the coal mine as a "complete disaster for our children's future".[58] Greenpeace UK stated "claims that it will be carbon neutral are like claiming an oil rig is a wind turbine".[11]

It's such a creepy yet melodic song! I hate that I love it. And I'm trying to figure out the meaning. Sure, the simple version is he kills a woman and stuffs her in his wall but, what does the part *_she'd knitted him a jumper with dominoes on so he wore it every day in every week_* mean? (even odder, they have a great song called Domino Man).

This table has four sturdy legs And a heart of very near wild oak When others would have screamed out loud my friend This one never even spoke I've been sat upon, I've been spat upon I've been treated like a bed Been carried like a stretcher, when someone thinks they're dead I've been dined upon, I've been wined upon I've been taken for a fool Taken for a desk, when they should have been at school This table's been pushed against the door When tempers, well tempers flare at night Banged upon with knuckles clenched my friend When someone thinks that they are right I've been sat upon, I've been spat upon I've been treated like a bed Been carried like a stretcher, when someone thinks they're dead I've been dined upon, I've been wined upon I've been taken for a fool Taken for a desk, when they should have been at school Tables only turn when tables learn Put me on a bonfire, watch me burn Treat me with some dignity, don't treat me like a slave Or I'll turn into the coffin in your grave I've been sat upon, I've been spat upon I've been treated like a bed Been carried like a stretcher, when someone thinks they're dead I've been dined upon, I've been wined upon I've been taken for a fool Taken for a desk, when they should have been at school Tables only turn when tables learn Put me on a bonfire, watch me burn Treat me with some dignity, don't treat me like a slave Or I'll turn into the coffin in your grave

52 mins in.... I remember the drinking days of Paul at the live mic gigs, Apollo Manchester/Blackburn (mid 90s) just for two examples, he couldn't sing without the pint next to him, even in breaks he would prop up the public bar Infront of everyone, he didnt give a fig, was always friendly though, great doo and fun at the time must admit so "Old red eyes" seemed legit at the time. xxx (I say it with love)

Jackie didnt directly admit she was working in a supermarket at the time (why not though?) but as I remember back in the early 90s thats exactly where she was discovered because she was singing as she was stacking shelves ffs 🤣 F ing best way to find her again and re-encounter her former encounter with Paul. Best thing that ever happened to Beautiful South. xxxx
