Yeah, I hated the theme. The "and" just makes it so constrained. Near impossible to come up with a central idea that matches both well. I like a lot about the game our team made, but it's a game where shadows play a central role, and references to alchemy are shoehorned in as "lore". Also on sunk cost fallacy: I don't think you were falling prey to that. Wanting your future activities to be fruitful is entirely rational. The fallacy is when you make your decisions by looking backward and wanting old investments to be "worth it" even if you have better options ahead. You seem to be avoiding that quite well!

Don't rely too heavy on sfx, I think it's important that the game feels good and is easily understandable with no sound

contrary to popular belief, alchemy has 'inner alchemy'. alchemy is the study of substances and methods of transmuting base materials to gold. inner alchemy is transforming your own body into "gold", to a perfect vehicle for divine realization/enlightenment through by meditation practices. in eastern culture you see this as activating chakras (you can see this reference in AOTL as well). in several buddha's story of enlightenment, you see him battling "shadows" to conquer himself. that's how i got our game to be the theme. but being a 1st time coder 1st time making a game, the playability was 1/10. haha as you said, thanks to thor for being an inspiration and pushing this thought of "you can make games."

I had a fun idea for it, and it would have been my first jam, but I just had no time to work on it between work and personal life. Instead I figured I’d develop it outside of the context and constraints of that game jam.

First I'll say, awesome job learning more things that can help you in your dev journey :D There are always things to learn and I hope you learn more things to help you along the way :D You could create groups back in 3.x, but it was a hassle and pain in the arse. Made much easier by just having that tag in 4.x The onready and unique names can be names for sure, but personally i prefer just using the export and assigning them in the inspector. It removes any chance of error from typing names out, and like unique names you can move them around in your tree and not need to update your code.

You just gave me an idea for a game: a roguelike restaurant sim, but in a fantasy setting, in which you have to buy the remains of creatures to use as ingredients, inventing new recipes, and trying not accidentally poisoning your clients. Yes, it's Delicious in Dungeon sim.

You’re doing awesome and totally right! It takes so much effort to start a new job and new direction before you hit your stride, no matter your background or qualifications. What matters is you’ve put in the work and are seeing results as you grow and adapt on your path to what you want to achieve! I felt a strong conviction when I caught your first video about going full time and it’s great to see the fire still burning 5 months on. Great stuff

Wishlisted it, looks great so far and I'll be trying the demo. I'm on my first tentative steps on the godot indie dev journey, so I'm finding following your own journey very inspiring - enjoying the scope creep podcast too. Keep it up man, you're doing amazing! :)

Amazing job scoping this game man! I knew the dangers of scoping too large but for my own game's initial design, it sorta required larger and larger pieces to realize the potential because of various reasons. How I wish I had a nice tight scope like your game, definitely a better way to go. To put out a great demo in 6 months, nicely done!

I've never made a game on my own before, but I've gone through two tutorials. I have no coding experience and no digital art experience. I just have an idea for a game. I only need a team of 10 people and 5 years to pull it off.

Best thing you can do is start as small as possible! Take it from me and my open world, 500 ingredient, day/night cycle roadhouse bartending game I'm making as a solo dev.

@gameboardgames Thanks. My goal is to build out one aspect of my larger idea as a stand-alone game, and get that to be fun and polished. If that succeeds, I can build from there.

I feel like scope creep is 100X harder to deal with as a solo dev. Without the positive peer pressure keeping you grounded it can be easy to get off track of what will practically work in a reasonable amount of time.
@Aarimous5 күн бұрын
True! My current strategy to combat the scope creep monster is to gut check the amount of dev time I think it will take + uncertainty in my ability to execute. Then if that is too high I will adjust the idea until it matches my timelines and or goals for the project. Good luck out there!

The main benefit of a publisher is marketing - managing all your own Google and Meta campaigns etc. is time-consuming. Although you also have a successful KZfaq channel, which is more than a lot of small publishers already 😂
