The scene where the lead ape is mulling over the bone, the music builds and he invents the first tool is one of the greatest things ever put to film.

The seasoned actress who can't remember which door to use, and Léaud's problems with his not so enthusiastic girlfriend, are the main reasons I watch my Blu-ray of La Nuit Américaine two, or three times every year.

I worked at a movie theater when this came out. I watched it on opening night and it was trash, one of the worst movie I ever saw. It's the only movie that I vividly recall people leaving the theater and actually talking about how bad it was. "That sucked!" or "What a stinker." We use to make fun of the movie daily by repeating the quote "Because of the kids, they called me Mr. Glass" I cannot believe they made TWO more movies in the series and that the director ever got another nickel of funding to make any other movie after this... Which were polished turds as well (Signs, The village...).

you know how we strain to avoid binary thinking with regard to certain issues these days? Well, certain French artists are incapable of anything other than binary thinking. You are either on our side and should spend billions to promote propaganda that i agree with, or you are a failure. Sigh. Ok, thanks for your very French, very neo Marxist, very absolute but ultimately irrelevant input.

Godard had a contract with American Zoetrope in the early 80’s, and they distributed Every Man Unto Himself (1980). Like David Lynch, he saw some of the filming of One From the Heart, and he actually shoot some BTS film

Pulp Fiction is the only film I’ve ever walked out of - twice. I hated it the first time and couldn’t take the inanity and silly violence and left. I mentioned it to a friend and she convinced me I was wrong and should at least try again and watch to the end. I got past the walkout moment from time number one but not far - I just couldn’t figure out why I was subjecting myself to the utter grotesque nonsense worked up to be clever and failing. Since the movie isn’t linear, who knows I may have seen the end but ultimately don’t care enough to find out. The irony I suppose is that I really liked Reservoir Dogs and see it as a strong movie with interesting characters and funny moments.

First of of all, There Will Be Blood and Inglourious Bastards shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence. Secondly, I disagree with Quentin's assessment of Paul Dano's performance. I remember sitting in the theater thinking, who the hell is this guy going toe to toe with Daniel Day Lewis? Paul Thomas Anderson knew exactly what he was doing with casting, one of the many reasons There Will Be Blood is regarded as a masterpiece.

Rainer Fassbinder is my favorite of the German New Wave filmmakers. I like his TV miniseries World on a Wire. Im not a fan of Douglas Sirk because im not a fan of 50s melodrama. Fassbinder tried to make actual drama out of melodrama. Ali Fear Eats the Soul is one example of that.

Jean Luc Godard is what I have called The Original Bad Boy of Movies. Critic and Cinematic Contrarian, Godard was not warm and sunny. Godard who probably is the epitome of an art film director States something which is true : You cannot separate or bifurcate art from money or money from art.
@kokomanationКүн бұрын
He makes no sense.The world economy does not depend on Art always.But an artist depends on the economy in order to make a living.Although the main purpose of Art is emotional expression and not money in my opinion

Godard changed Cinema Coppola didn't. He also lost a testicle! Godard is anti human hates the human race. That's why he always sounds like a prick. He had little time for his contemporaries! You either luv his negativity or you know your place! Amurika is rightly despised as a disaster for the world some prefer Rimbaud to Rambo.
@ianchristopher9422Күн бұрын
You gotta remember Godard didn't believe in conventional cinema like we know, he only believed later in his career in the concept of 'anti-cinema', so he was only pleased with a movie that most people found it odd or a failure. He would probably love movies like 'Dogtooth' and 'Enter the Void' and hate Academy Awards winners for example.

Godard sounds like he is very jealous of what Francis accomplished. This is a monumental film. And he begins by saying the film is only relevant if it had like ten times its own budget? How is that even a criticism? To say the director did not use the same funding to fund a single film as which was used by the american government to fund a war is not rocket science.
@jon8004Күн бұрын
In a roundabout, sarcastic way, he was arguing that Coppola spent too much money on the movie. Ironically, I think Coppola would probably agree.
