It really depends on your use case. As a family car, the Atto 3 wins hands down. There’s just no comparison. The rear seating in the MG4 is too bare bones, and I couldn’t do that to my kids. But as a second car or daily commuter, the lower price and superior driving dynamics of the MG4 would have to give it the win.

Depends what you need the car for - I've towed things exactly 3 times in my life and just borrow friend's cars for that purpose

the ota updated situation in the mg4 is a dealbreaker along with the very crap and laggy infotainment screen. I love driving my essence 64, but these things ps me off every time I get in. not to mention its 7K cheaper that when I bought it in Dec.....😩

wow $7,000 cheaper? Which state are you in? Then again EVs values have been a bit crazy lately, a friend of mine bought the Tesla Model Y on release, now it's about $16,000 cheaper 18 months later

well the elastic straps on mine were completely disintegrated which is why I used new elastics sewn into the same place. There's always a way to fix things if you can think it through - good luck!

I recently purchased the Carlinkit 5.0 from Walmart for $45US for my 2021 Ford Escape PHEV and it works great! Not sure why you needed to add a 20 second delay. I didn’t add the delay and it connects to CarPlay fast and works every time!

Different car. The MG4 is pretty slow to startup compared to all other cars, which is why it needs a delay. If you don't need a delay then great, it'll work much quicker in your car!

Would love to, but it'd be at my own expense and I'm booked to see cold chisel in ballarat on the saturday, so probably not worth it for me to go for one day return to melbourne. Hope it's agood show though!

I like our MG4 Essence64. The BYD Seal was not available at the time we bought. The BYD brand name, front wheel drive, odd looking interior design, no local dealership and available colour schemes, were some of the reasons I opted to ignore the BYD offerings. I prefer cars which are nice to drive. The MG4 continues to delight in this regard. It’s a very enjoyable drive. The downside of the MG4 is the wired connection to AppleCarPlay/Android. I would like a set of buttons for a few functions. These may be minor irritations but they are something to consider.

If I was to get one of these I would definitely go the MG4. Interior and exterior looks a lot nicer and the drive is much better

Agreed, MG4 is a superior driving car and I like the looks better too. The major flaw in the MG4 is lack of over the air updates which I'm going to keep complaining about endlessly!

I was going to buy the atto 3, until I sat in it, no driver leg space or legroom if tall, stearing wheel offset to left, interior looks cheap and door handles weird, owned MG4 Excite 51 for 7 months now and no complaints, heaps of interior leg space and fast and zippy, definitely a driver's car 😊

Plenty of people will have no issues with the drive and handling of the Atto 3, but there's a lot of people who can't stomach the floaty and soft handling of the Atto 3. I've driven the MG4 pretty enthusiastically a few times and it's surprising how good even the base mode excite 51 is

All temperature and fan controls dont need use of the screen - can all be done by voice....so much easier.....and, the MG, as you state many times, has a lot more omissions in features which are standard on the BYD - therefore the BYD is easily the better car IMO.

The BYD has really good voice recognition, much better than the awful voice recognition in my Tesla. Already missing that lovely huge panoramic roof - BYD throw a lot of standard features in their car which is great for buyers

Hoping OTA updates come to the MG4 one day. The dolphin just looks weird to me, the interior even more "interesting" than the atto 3 (hated the flipper door handles), it's FWD, and the entry model dolphin has an abysmal 0-100 time measured using a calendar

And then the MG4 LR has even more range! But we only use the excite 51 as a city car, so range is really a nonissue for us

Dashcam functions well - no concerns so far! Great value for money compared to blackviews that all the dealers seem to push, must be a great profit margin on those dashcams!

I was just thinking everything was OK, then my wife says it happened again 3 days ago while turning into a carpark - again lucky not rear ended. Will have to see if I can pull the footage from the dashcam and see how bad it is

My biggest take from this show is fast forward 10 yrs and there will be very few non- Chinese brands left in Australia- you have been warned! I wanted to see the Renault Scenic if it ever comes here!

I'm old enough to remember when hyundai launched the $13,000 excel and every journalist trashed the car and said hyundai will never make it in Australia. Now look where Hyundai/Kia are. The chinese manufacurers will evolve even quicker and dinosaur manufacturers like Toyota will be in trouble, and they know it!

would've been nicer to see a wider range of brands - eg where was mercedes, bmw, vw, audi, mg, tesla? I have no doubt the organisers of the show reached out to those manufacturers, but for whatever reason they declined to participate. Their loss - I feel buyers who attended would be impressed by the xpengs and zeekr

Organisers reach out to all car manufacturers of EVs and invite them to participate. It's up to the brands as to whether they want to participate or not. There will be a huge display of EVs at the Sydney International EV Show in November with lots of brands on display! Next year the international EV show will be back in Melbourne and is bound to be even bigger and better :)

I'm disappointed a lot of manufacturers didn't have any cars at all - where was VW, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche etc? I think it's a metaphor - if they're missing at a show like this, are they actually expecting to play a part in the EV market in future?

I was on the Canadian Hyundai website yesterday and the Kona is the same price in Canada. Way overpriced in my opinion.

With the increasing competition in the ev space, agreed - kona EV would be a great way for Hyundai owners to trade up within the brand, but it's a big step up from the non EV kona.

Yes - just waiting on a price confirmation. I'd expect it to be priced above the MG4, Dolphin, Ora Cat as it has a much more premium interior, however too much higher and it'll be attacked by EVs in the next size category. It's a beautiful car, really hoping to review it in more depth

I spoke to someone who had signed up at the show for the Zeekr X his contract showed the total price at an eye watering $75,000. Yes I said $75,000!! Way over priced at that much. The finish wasn’t bad but the trim on the top of the door cards was really thin, I’d expect it to tear in days.

Toyota are the biggest of the legacy ICE manufacturers - imagine the billions they've invested in manufacturing petrol engines and all the supporting old tech. They'd rather protect their old manufacturing tech than invest in EVs, which is why Toyota Australia have been the worst auto manufacturer in "supporting" the transition to clean energy. But at least they're grudgingly offering up a cobbled together EV, where the wheels might stay on if you're lucky, and use up some spare old interior parts from the 90s.

agreed, they had an EV5 at the Australian open (not available to touch and feel) this should've been an excellent opporunity to show one off. I feel Kia are underrated as an EV manufacturer, it'll be great to see them over the next 12-24 months

I was there too. X-Peng cars are really good in terms of tech and design, their prices are competitive as well. I was informed that the X-Peng G6 (both variants) will be under 60K all inclusive. I was a bit disappointed as there were limited brands. Some of the cars are very expensive, not sure how they are going to survive in the industry especially with so many new Chinese hitech and affordable cars coming in the market in next 12 months.

Agreed - the Chinese manufacturers will be sharks in the market - abundant, fast moving and will eagerly kill any competition who show signs of weakness *cough TOYOTA*. Higher manufacturing capacity, mainland China battery production ability, rapid product development and improvements and lower costs.

How ridiculously priced are some of these EV's. Imagine the insurance costs for the no name brand vehicles. Named brand EV's insurance is getting expensive.

Insurance costs are through the roof. Allianz doubled my insurance renewal on my model 3, so naturally I'm no longer a customer of theirs. That said the insurances on all my cars have increased 20-100% over the last 12 months so it's not just limited to EVs. Need to be a lot smarter shopping around and leaving insurance companies who charge the lazy tax.

pretty much exactly the same process. Yank off the side panels, undo a few bolts and unclip the brake light connector then swap around.

hi chris, never experienced the emergency stops, but i could be driving along a straight road and the car is tugging the wheel to the the left when ,im nowhere near a white line.i dont like a car driven by a computer,i can drive myself. the sooner mg fix this is the day they will sell more cars

Yeah the lane keeping assist stuff isn't the most sophisticated system out there. MG need to enable over the air updates, otherwise buyers are just going to buy other cars which have more consistent and frequent software updates.
