This is one of the very best interviews on how an artist plays her instrument that I have ever heard. I play a little guitar and never really thought too much of the bass. Francesca has instilled a new respect for the instrument, particularly the double bass in me❤. The two songs with the Lovesick Duo were just outstanding! 😻

It seems to me that a significant curvature in the fingerboard would be beneficial. After all, in any position on the fingerboard you only need as much angle between string and fingerboard as is required to produce a buzz-less sound. Hypothetically, at the “16th fret” position that angle should be identical to the “first fret” angle. After all, the higher up the fingerboard you are playing the smaller the space needed for the string to vibrate…. You could make the instrument MUCH easier to play in thumb position by correctly curving the fingerboard.

Great insight, I really appreciate these videos. However… I’m always confused when someone says they only play acoustically then immediately start talking about their mic. Like… are they not aware how that microphone gets the sound to the speakers? Are they assuming it’s magic?

Another great video Geoff, after watching it I went and bought a set of Thomastik Infeld Spirocore 3885, OW Light Spiral Core for my 3/4 Jazz Double Bass. Then I noticed you are using the S42W lights, which are for a 4/4 Double Bass. My question is do you recommend the S42W set on a 3/4 or are you playing a 4/4?
@DiscoverDoubleBass17 күн бұрын
I think I've used both sets on my 3/4 bass and am not sure if I have a preference. When I buy my next set I will just go with 3/4. It think both are great and there's probably not a huge difference.

And what about the tunning of the "small strings" between the bridge and the tail piece? I feel that when they are in tune the bass resonates more but how to get that in tune? All the best

I've never looked into that, but I think you can tune the after length of the string with special bridges.

The Bach was phrased around his shifts rather than the musical line…something I have found to be very common when listening to double bassists play Bach..
@stewartrosen421829 күн бұрын
I disagree. I think David phrases the line first and picks fingerings and shift patterns that work for the musical line as he imagines it.

I've taught this concept for many years. I instruct students to rest fingers that are not actively engaged with stopping the string. This practice teaches them to stay close to the strings rather then flying away from them. More importantly, it teaches them to find recuperation time while they are playing.
