GREAT video! I tell all of my friends who want to learn to fly fish to watch all of your videos. Thanks, and keep to up. Perhaps do a video on how to buy and what to look a when you buy a rod and reel ( slow, med. and fast rods). Vest vs. packs vs. lanyards, boots: rubber vs. felt vs. cleats. 10 of your favorite dry flys, nymphs, and streamers. And finally show a "twitch mend" vs a "full style" mend so as to keep your fly from moving. I know there is so much more. Looking forward to seeing more!

Bro, I'm not sure what video it was, but you so sold me on the 2wt, soft hackle spey swing. and you guys sell these amazing looking flys called the Rio King Swetfly. and omg. I'm on the tail water of the big lost in idaho, I wasn't catching much until I switched to this. It became an every other cast situation. but I wasn't landing fish. These flys.... the hook bends!!!!! or rather straightens!!!!! I've landed trout on 6x before. I know how to be soft. my 4 wt spey rod is medium action redington from amazon. super soft. 11'3. even a nice naitive 15 inch trout straightened these hoooks!!!! I couldn't believe it. finally I was here and figured it all out and found the magic sauce and could not get a fish in the net. every time the hook would be bent straight!!!! and I was being soooo soft and letting them fight, and run.... my drag could not have been any lighter. trust me I know how to bring fish in gently and slowly. I can't believe it. any thoughts? is the 4 wt too much for those soft hackles? I was in such a crazy situation becaue that was the fly they wanted!

We've tied this fly on the Daiichi 1260 per the designer's recommendations, however we've decided to make an inline change to the Daiichi 1760. The length and shape of the hook remains the same, but the wire diameter increases to give the fly more strength. We're sorry you lost some fish and appreciate you letting us know."

I tried for days to get the haul right. After long time trying I have landed the motion and got it into two moves. The only part i am still struggling with is tge release at the end my line still falls flat
@FarBank
@FarBank 4 күн бұрын
That will come with practice. Simply, though, the best time to release the line is the instant the rod stops the casting stroke - not a milli second earlier

I always preferred river fishing because i have ADHD and it kept me busy and helped clear my brain and lake fishing was kind of boring and could only be done with friends around I’m glad to see that fly fishing will work on a lake too. I’ve called myself a fisherman and have tried to be one since I was 14 I’d never catch anything but i convinced myself that it didn’t matter because it was the therapy I was there for but now I’m 47 and I’m still after that therapy but I’d rather catch something too lol

Thanks for this video. You explained everything very clearly I spend most of my fishing time with spinning gear but I use to fly fish back in the seventies. I could cast pretty good and would single haul when needed. I always enjoyed the dynamics of loading and timing and was surprised by the number of people who could not get even the most basics. My son and his friends want to get into fly fishing so I guess I’ll be getting back into it. I’ll start practicing the double haul so they think I’m a god

I just realize something I bought a sage one 690-4. I worked all summer for that damn rod and then it was on sale at Costco for $700 cheaper. Spit in my eye was that rod broke a total of seven times now and your warranty manager told me it was just “bad luck “I am a guide in Alaska. My clients by the rods I tell them to buy. Because I am always on the fish with them steelhead trout waters that I’ve never been fish before and to have your company sell me a Rod for $800 and your warranty department more than once tell me to get lost that the third time it broke I sent it in and it sat in your warranty department for six months to be sent back and the rod sock missing. Then your company tried to blame me for that when I didn’t send it in. It was my local fly shop. But the last interaction was the worst. I’m not gonna repeat what was said by the warranty manager or whoever runs customer service in that department, but I’m telling you right now you can get a hold of me by responding to this if you wanna make it right, I will give you the serial number and the registration Claim it’s Warren on your website. I don’t fish that rod anymore. It sits as a reminder of why we don’t use sage rods. They don’t hold up and they are meant for little tiny trout. Great job with your marketing, but it sucks that you forgot about the passion and the fishing. Thanks for stealing my money $800 for a rod. On top of that $300 back-and-forth with your warranty department and not having a rod every single summer for the past seven years. I told you guys it was a lemon. There was a manufacturing flaw and all I got back was a big middle finger and my money stolen.

i was wondering, there is a river with pikes and musky near my place, when the waters warmed up i was thinking about finding deeper spots but the current is kind of strong, is the deeper spots are really colder if the water is running? i mean the deep holes water got replaced all the times by hot water? i should drop a thermometer who can record the colder readings, maybe the flow happens on top of the
@FarBank
@FarBank 26 күн бұрын
They can be a degree or two different, but it does depend on how much current is pushing through, and if the new current churns the water up to mix the deep water with the surface water. You can get a number of thermometers that take river temps, and just tie them to a piece of string and throw in the area you want to check the temp - pretty easy, actually, and can be most interesting.

I fly fish for everything, small creek browns, brooks and rainbows, great lakes salmon and steelhead, bass, pike, and even walleye. Recently i was gifted a 16 foot, bamboo spey rod, and i was considering using it fo chinook and cohos. My main concern is that i generally use a 10 wt minimum as 25+ lb chinook are not uncommon. Should i put some 7-8 weogh line on the rod or kust make it a centerpin for using roe?
@FarBank
@FarBank 29 күн бұрын
We believe a 16ft bamboo rod is more like an 11wt, or maybe a 10wt. If so, a 7/8 line would be too light.

Your double haul video of two years ago was excellent, this one is even better. You are a truly outstanding teacher. I have been working on improving my basic stroke and loop formation daily for about 6 months and am going to start your double haul practice program tomorrow. I have already obtained the shooting head and running line. I am not especially well physically coordinated, so wish me luck. Also, I am curious. With daily practice sessions of approximately 1/2 hour, what is the typical range of weeks of practice before an average student achieves the competency to consistantly cast a 5 weight Rio Gold 75 feet?
@FarBank
@FarBank Ай бұрын
Glad to hear the videos have helped inspire you to get in to the double haul, and hope it goes well for you. It sounds like you have the right foundation, at least. We asked Simon with regard to your question. He said that it is a little tough to answer as people learn at different rates. With a good foundation and practice as you suggest he said it shouldn't take more than a few weeks to get there. You have to go beyond the basics, though, and learn to lengthen your casting stroke, add "drift" into the back cast, and get used to smooth, but faster acceleration of the rod and the haul. With those skills he said you should be able to achieve that.

I can see where this technique works well on larger waters, but I struggle to imagine how you can use soft hackles on smaller waters (streams less then 25' wide). How would you approach smaller waters?
@FarBank
@FarBank Ай бұрын
They definitely work on smaller rivers, but everything is shorter and scaled down. You can use weighted, bead head soft hackles to get down instead of using a VersiLeader, and run a short 7ft leader or so from the end of the line. All that helps in the limited space

I can watch Simons videos and read his books over and over and I always pick up some nuances that I missed previously. My suggestion to those who think they need to spend lots of money, join a local fly fishing club. Soon you will acquire more fly fishing gear than you will ever use. Most clubs have free tables that seem to get continuously refilled as families donate their father or grandfather stuff when they pass on. And regular meetings with raffles and flea markets where people practically give stuff away to grateful friends. Plus you will get exposed to all kinds of fishing. And a good club will have regular speakers that will also help you along your path. And if you still want to learn on the cheap, buy a cheap $20 dollar line. Cut the head off and use Berkley mono for running line. I think the point that everyone is missing is that it’s important to feel the loading as to introduce good muscle memory. Makes casting the other lines easier because you have the basics down.

I think this is the hardest thing to perfect as a new fly fisherman. I think by the end of the season if I keep fishing as much as I am I'll get my loops much tighter. My back cast seems to be really good buy my forward casts are sloppy. The back cast naturally has translation and then rotation but my forward cast gets early rotation. I think I'll have to get some footage of me casting sometime to study.

Incredible series of instructional videos. It has taken my fly fishing to a whole new level. I do have a question, in another video you mention attaching a 7' tapered leader to the end of the versileader while here you use straight tippet based on sink rate. What is better?
@FarBank
@FarBank Ай бұрын
Good question. We checked with Simon who said that he prefers to use a tapered leader in most cases, but it depends on the diameter of the tippet. If using thin tippet, he prefers the tapered leader as the VersiLeader is quite thick at the front. If using heavier tippet 3X or more, he is fine with level. Hope that makes sense.
