I never had the strength to push a half Nelson all the way to a pin so this was my go to pin. Because it’s really painful to be pinned this way, the other person can’t fight back as much. I was so shitty at half Nelson but did this pin perfectly. “My coach was like how the HELL?!”. It was definitely my favorite pin. I also started it while directly above the person, so I would spread their legs open with mine so that couldn’t use their legs

I'm really not a fan of cutting across to a double from a high crotch. I'm not saying it doesn't work, it just seems odd to me that the go to finish of a move that you shoot to only one leg is going to be to finish with both legs. Like, how many finish a single by switching off to a double? Sure, the head position isn't there on a single, but you can often easily cut across to a double from behind. In my opinion the strongest high crotch finish is simply to lift the opponent. I genuinely don't know why people don't teach this more. Only if the lift--and then the dump--fails should you be trying to cut across to a double.
@JPerry-jw9ik3 жыл бұрын
It's all a risk/reward thing. Lifting is generally low success and requires too much energy.
@insidetrip1013 жыл бұрын
@@JPerry-jw9ik Nonsense. I'm not saying you lift when you're not in on the shot, but if you have a proper high crotch that you're deep in on, then its lower energy to pop your hips and lift than to fight the arm block, the corner sit, and the scramble that frequently comes out of a high crotch changeoff to a double. If you think that lifting someone your own weight is low success high energy, then I think you're either not getting in on the shot, or lifting wrong. If you're not actually getting in on the shot, then see what I said above about how the high crotch is often used as a crutch for people who don't properly set up their shots/take bad shots. The high crotch is generally weak. Just about anyone who knows what they're talking about would rather have a single or a double.
@JPerry-jw9ik3 жыл бұрын
@@insidetrip101 there are too many variables to make these kinds of assessments. What has worked for you may not work for others. I will say this though... I've never once, in my highschool, college, or coaching career been taken down with a lift of any kind. :-p
@insidetrip1013 жыл бұрын
@@JPerry-jw9ik I can't speak to your experience, but my wrestling improved dramatically in college because my college coach finally got me to abandon a lot of the "conventional wisdom" that I picked up in highschool. And, I agree with you, a lift from a high crotch is a lower percentage move than a double leg . . . but I promise you that its more high percentage than all the moving parts of a high crotch change off to a double. This was my college coach's logic: "If you're going to finish in a double, then just shoot a double." Again, I'm not saying that its always wrong to change off to a double from a high crotch, but I genuinely don't understand why you take a shot for the explicit purpose of finishing with another shot. Its one thing to be prepared for chain wrestling, but its another to plan the shot's failure. But maybe this is just NCAA DII scrub-tier logic. Also, I'm genuinely impressed that no one ever lifted you. Only a few wrestlers can say that, and I'm definitely not one of them.
@JPerry-jw9ik3 жыл бұрын
@@insidetrip101 don't be too impressed. I'm one of those super short squatty guys. Like 5'5" and 141lbs (college). Much easier to chase the ankle on me. :-) As for my high crotch rationale, my goal was to not have to change off at all. A lot of the times I was fast enough to be behind them by the time they sprawled or responded. That was optimal. Most times old chase the ankle and put it on the shelf... Then drive through. Just depends on circumstance and biology. Gosh I love wrestling! So many options.

I have a question: What would you say to an adult wrestler that's trying to get back into the sport in the Masters Div. A class after a 14-15 year hiatus? I don't have to be the best at it right off the bat, but I have to cut weight and loose some of the pounds I've accrued over the years & go through the motions. Also, not only that, trying to get back into the sport in the rural south where there isn't a publicly open wrestling mat around every corner like there are say, open basketball courts or open to the public wrestling clubs like there are up north? Where I live there are only a couple legit USA/AAU clubs, if they're still even open or not defunct; & most if not all the competition is comprised of high school wrestlers, i.e. no wrestlers anywhere around my age bracket still wrestling & practice times that do not align with the life of a working man. I remember the AAU system advocating wrestling into your 60's and that's what I would like to do & I won a state championship in AAU when I was still in high school, but it seems like there just isn't any availability for that around here & no one in my age group still wrestling. The mats are all tied to schools & not publicly open. Also, I'm a big fan of Metcalf's signature move, the H-crotch! I was so involved at one time in my life I suffered a big loss & almost tried to attend college out west at Univ. of N. Iowa...I knew I couldn't be a wrestler at Iowa but maybe N. Iowa as a walk-on but it never came to fruition, it was too far away. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I have got Brent Metcalf's DVD series, and what I will say is that he excels just as much as a teacher, as he did as a wrestler. I followed him throughout his college career, and admired no matter how good the other guy was, he'd always find a way to get to the high crotch. That was his weapon of mass destruction.
@bernardomedina80289 жыл бұрын
Once they do have wrist control, is there a way to escape? What counter can you do? I understand one should hand fight first the 2 on 1 and breakdown before they even go as far as ball and chain. But its hard for an adult not to make mistakes, even harder for an 8 yo. My son is good, gets 1st & 2nd place at tournaments. However, he has been caught with wrist locked between legs. What then? There must be a technique to throw the other guy off balance & make him release the hold or break the hold????? I am not a wrestler but watch many videos to help my son. I just can't find this anywhere despite owning the entire Dave Mills Youth Wrestling 6 DVD set, Erik Akin Youth wrestling 6 DVD set, entire John Smith DVD series (like 7 dvds), Mark Ironsides Sitback escape dvd, and several others including Dan Gabbles & Wade Schalles.

If the other person does it fast enough, you won't be able to sprawl. And trying to sprawl from that position, you can either break your neck or land flat on your stomach.
