I listened to the full discussion and while I fully support initiatives related to keeping bees I have several concerns that I'd like to express. 1. the annual cost that was stated by the speaker of between $5,000 and $11,000 is severe and many times more than other local providers such as New England Bee Keeping who are experts in the field, having kept bees in the area for decades at services rates thousands of dollars less - for example $2,000 per year for two hives. 2. The speaker mentioned a "honey guarantee" of 100 jars. Bees are animals and are subject to a number of seasonal conditions, hive placement challenges and other maladies such as varroa mites, all of which can affect honey production. I understand honey may come from other sources to make up a deficit but the program should be more about the bees and the importance of biodiversity and not about honey production. Bees make honey and a hive may need to consume between 50 and 75 lbs. just to make it through winter. If honey stores are taken, either the bees starve to death or need to be fed other nutrition, and with hives on roofs access in winter may be difficult. With numerous providers already in Massachusetts, providing superior services for significantly less cost why look elswhere?
