I also had swallowed the first pill and thought I had it figured out but I kept running into dead ends to prove it. BUT NOW oh my goodness, you have just given me hope that I can also figure out who my biological father is. I have contacted several people on my unknown list and no one has responded. I'm swallowing the other pill now, holding my breath and diving in. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. No other DNA youtuber has explained it in a way like you have.

Don't look for lost parents or kids. Leave it all in the past. It's better to not know them. My daughter found me 2 months ago after lost 18 years. She is a total jerk. I broke off all communication. It was a epic disaster. Leave everything in the past. DO NOT LOOK FOR LOST KIDS OR PARENTS.

my wife got a new Windows 11 laptop, the old laptop is windows 10. I moved all her files under documents which included Family tree maker, After we loaded ftm 2019. no data bases showed up. After calling FTM I was told the data bases need to be rebuilt for windows 11, at a charge of 150.00...... They supposedly did that but missed several of family trees. Is there away I can do that database migration by loading a tool to do that, and upgrade or new version. What bothers me is I have built and sold about 50 Windows 11 PC's and this is the first time I have heard that a database had to be rebuilt when moved from Windows 10 to Windows 11...... ANy Ideas, or help is much appreciates........ Pete

Thanks. I know I'm late to the game and there may be more updated videos, but this helps. I'm 59 and just learned that I'm not my dad's son. I was contacted from the new family inquiring who I am and we are trying to figure out where I fit in. Thankfully, they've taken lots of dna test so I have at least 20+ people between 250 cM and 1450 cM. It's a big family, but I'm trying to narrow down who I belong to.

I just started using Shared cM Project tool. I noticed that they go from Aunt to Great Aunt, and skipped Grandaunt. Grandaunt is one generation below a Great Grandaunt, so it is confusing when Great Aunt is used. I am not sure if they skipped Grandaunt or if the cM numbers are right or not. Great Aunt is technically Great Grandaunt because it is the same generation as the Great Grandparents. Grandaunt is on same generation as Grandparents. Many people use Great Aunt when they are referring to their siblings' grandkids. They should be using Grandaunt. The same thing applies to Granduncle, Great Granduncle, etc., and Grandniece/nephew, Great Grandniece/nephew. And even the "HALFs" are missing the Half Grandaunt, etc. I noticed in this video that the BP does the same thing. The math may be correct, but the missing "Grand" is confusing. I reported it to Shared cM Project Tool in an email. I just found your videos today, so I will be watching more of these most excellent videos of yours. By the way, I could get into the DNA Family tree website, but my PC security program has blocked the two links to BP and KIN-ID templates due to thinking it is a Malicious Site. Not sure why!

Watched your original video about various Ancestry bugs and just have just missed this one. It's great that Ancestry has fixed this bug but their full DNA match list pagination system is just not fit for purpose, by which I mean it works if you don't go very far down it and look at your most distant matches (of which there are 1,000s). If you do dig deeper (and I suspect this is because all the data is on basically one page that needs to be loaded into memory) then it will either cause you big performance issues on the page or crash the page - try scrolling to the end of your 9cM matches whilst keeping an eye on the amount of memory the page is consuming. As for the bug, that no one seems to have found (unless I'm mistaken) I believe that if you go into a DNA match and back too many times what it actually does is briefly show the DNA match list before flicking you back to the DNA match page that you were just looking at. If you then click back it takes you to the DNA landing page (sometimes for a different test, but this may be because I have multiple tabs open with that test's results open on it). It does make me wonder if this is an anti-scraping feature, although anyone wanting to do this could work around this (and probably wouldn't be going backwards and forwards like this anyway).

Not all matches fit into a system like this. My DNA matches are just full of kids that are adopted or mom had an affair. Not all want to discuss anything with you if it is a surprise. I am an only child with a match at 1176cM. Have decided her mom is adopted, and possibly a child of my mom with a different father. But all communication has been cut off by them. My mom long deceased. Her mom alive but refuses DNA test or even the idea. Some puzzles can't be solved. I have 6 cousin matches where daddy was a one night stand, several that were given up for adoption at birth. And nothing is solved. Been doing my tree for over 20 yrs. 25,000+ people. Multiple places for DNA matches and good at WATO.

I love this tool! I understand it better than that other one Blaine Bettinger was using, sorry Blaine! Lol. I was really looking for something like this to help explain the different family relationships such as 4xGreat-Aunt, etc... My question is: I am looking for my late mom's biological parents. She was adopted, but I found her family via my DNA matches since she never took a test. Can this tool be used for her line? I noticed in the video you only do the paternal line? My biggest top match is a woman who shares 1,094 cM! Ancestry says she would be my 1st-2nd cousin (I really wish Ancestry would separate out those 1-2 cousin lines) I see this tool also shows that too at 47%. So, that would mean we would look at one of her aunt/uncles? Still not quite understanding that part. Could you explain more? Thank you.

I am loving this! It is slowly helping me. I am still confused. Trying to understand it bit by bit. Now, I have figured out the steps for someone younger than me. How about for someone who is older than me? This relative has 351 cM and is a 1st cousin. So, 4 steps up for me and 3 steps down for her? Correct? Is there any way we can get a digital copy of the ball and pattern so we can overlay and learn?

I just found your channel and it’s been such a great help though I am so stuck trying to find my biological father. I only have matches in the second cousin column through ancestry and for the life of me can’t figure out who this man is! Maybe if you could do a newer video on building a tree note that certain websites have improved…I’d be so grateful!! Thanks!!

I just found out last night that my bio has passed and I was lied to my whole life as well 😭 I'm trying to figure out how to grieve someone I don't know at all. I have only been searching for about 8 months but I always knew my mother lied to me somehow (whom I call my egg donor) I literally stumbled onto your KZfaq video and all I can say is that I sooo appreciate you and I'm sending you hugs back.

Hi there, I apologize if this is a double post computer glitchy today! Do you have a playlist or recommended watch order for someone just joining? I have an Ancestry and 23andme account and DNA results for each. I am trying to determine my bio father with zero information as I am adopted. I do know my bio mother however she would never tell me anything about my father. My match information is very confusing and has been leading me around in circles for months now. I don't have any matches closer than 2's (335cm) and those matches represent so many potential GG's that it's been impossible to start narrowing a hypothesis. Ancestry and 23andme don't even agree and are calling the same person a 2 and a 2C1R. Pedigree collapse? I have no idea. It's a puzzle for sure. Anyhow, if you could point me in the right direction, I feel like I jumped in without a life jacket. Love your content. Thank you.

I’m definitely living proof. I took a dna test and found out that my Mother’s father wasn’t her father. I’m working through matches now for her. After she tested the highest match is 943. Haven’t been able to speak to him, but he is a nephew of my potential GF

I understand this video is 3 years old and that the latest version of FTM is even older, but I have a question. I worked on my tree for many years and put it aside some time ago. I recently tried reinstalling FTM 2010 on my Windows 10 machine and it wouldn't run. So, just to see, I installed Roots Magic 9 trail, which installed and imported my FTM file perfectly. The problem is, I have always liked FTM and am reluctant to change to something different (and pay $80 for the program again). My question is, do you think four-year-old FTM is still worth the investment, or is there some other software you'd recommend? Also, I think I read that FTM is no longer being upgraded (which seems to be the case).
