As for other notable Faroese Jews, I can't think of anyone more than (I guess) the photographer Tórik Rouah. I get why there aren't many here; for one, whale meat technically isn't kosher.

Wouldn't it be interesting to raise the early 19th/20th century Zionist thinkers from the dead and introduce them to Benjamin Netanyahu, Gantz and Ben Gvir and watch their reaction.

A wise man. Binationalism is still, in the long term, the only way to guarantee peace in Israel and Palestine.

The role had always been “the Mufti.” So, in 1920, Nashashibi was “the Mufti.” Later, to ingratiate him, Hitler had Mufti Han Amin Al Hussein referred to as The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. It stuck.

You're mistaken. The office of Grand Mufti was established by Storrs' short-lived predecessor Louis Bols in an effort at building a political alliance with the Husseinis. Cities had had muftis, but by establishing a Grand Mufti, Bols was attempting to elevate Husseini to a national status. Nashashibi, meanwhile, never served as Mufti, except arguably in 1951 as custodian of the Waqf.

At Hamel, Pershing ordered his troops to do a runner, and they did. Monash was furious and even more disparaging of the Americans in the coming months as they were useless to the point that Rawlinson recommended their complete withdrawal. The way Foch had slighted the Australians by giving battle honours for Hamel only to Haig and Pershing made Monash even more determined to ensure that his way of warfare would succeed. It’s to the credit of the King that he had Rawlinson sideline Haig and to ignore the French and the hapless Americans to have Monash and his commanders plan and give their troops the lead to break the German lines to bring on the Armistice. The intellectual breakthrough and organisation of the Australians who had developed combined arms warfare turned their attack into mobile warfare, which was completely contradictory to the British and French tactics of static warfare in a contest of endurance. Monash was simply a genius, who came from the only developed democracy to fight in WWI with an influence on the victories that far outweighed its tiny population of 4.5 million. He and his men were simply freaks from the future that Europeans still couldn’t see coming until revolutions upended the old order.

Much better than the most popular “Jewish History” channels. It’s better to dig into the individual figures, their beliefs and actions than to treat Jews as a unified (Zionist) monolith. It’s important to cover “controversial” events such as the King David Hotel, killing ofLord Moyne or Folke Bernadotte. Hoping you will discuss Jacob Israel deHaan in a video at some point. An interesting figure. We just passed the 100th anniversary of his death on June 30, 1924.

You claim that Herzl's position of the need for a Jewish state was a minority position, even by 1920 - what are you basing that on? Clearly the Zionist Congresses that he presided over (and that were inspired by him) may not have represented all Zionists, but definitely the mainstream. So how do you claim that his position was a minority position?

The number of casualties of the Portuguese and Spanish Inquisitions is always exaggerated by liars or ignorant people. The Portuguese Inquisition ordered the execution of 1000 people, and the Spanish Inquisition, of 3000 people. The majority of the people trialed were penanced (which means forgiven). Meanwhile, the Massacre of Granada (1066 A.D.), in islamic Spain, killed 4000 Jews and the massacre of Cordoba (1013 A.D.), also in islamic Spain killed 2000 Jews. Both of these islamic massacres on the jews, killed more jews in one day, than the Portuguese and Spanish inquisitions in all of their history. You should have mentioned that the Jews were second-class citizens in all of the Islamic territories in the world.

Jewish tradition has it that Bar Yochai passed away of natural causes. The Chatam Sofer makes a mention of this and uses it as a rationale for the celebrations of Lag Baomer, which honors Rabbi Shimon more than any other Jewish sage of that time...

What’s tragic about this entire period leading up to today, is how differently things could have gone. Regardless of anyone’s views, I hope we can bring about a more peaceful future soon.

I’m not sure about the Golconda diamonds, but diamonds in the Deccan were exhausted well before the colonial period. I know this because I come from the area. The region however remained a skill centre of diamonds cutting, pearl and gemstone jewellery making so people would bring precious & semiprecious gems and pearls to the area for processing & sale.

Damn. It appears nationalism, as it was in the 19h and early 20th centuries entirely escaped Birtish understanding. You know, the whole "ethno-" part of what is nowadays knows as "ethno-nationalism".

@viliussmproductions In a way the system of representation based on religion sounds like the dynamic in Ireland where the civil war in the north is between royalists who were for the UK and a Protestants and the republicans who are for Republic of Ireland and are Catholics - that being said there's devolvement already as seen with Scotland so I'm not sure why ethnic boundaries escaped them.
@viliussmproductions

@@zjzr08 See, that's kind of what I'm getting at, even the Ireland issue is perceived as religious. As for Scotland, that's a fair point, unfortunately, I'm absolutely not familiar enough with Scottish nationalism/separatism prior to the 20th century.

The berbers were largely christianized at the time of the Muslim conquest. Additionally, I feel like your video makes it seem that the Byzantine empire was some sort of corrupted state… it had fought a three decade long war with Persia, stating “destroyed itself is inaccurate.” It also seems like it glosses over the massacres of Jews in Arabia, and the loss of status the Jews had in Yemen. I feel like this topic always veers into orientalism. Like that the caliphate was benevolent, Jews and their status fluctuated with the time, but Jews were always second class citizens.

Samuel was just doing his best to promote Binational Zionism (whether Jews AND Arabs were gonna agree with that was another matter) but from what I'm hearing was appointed into a British puppet...the fall guy that wasn't the ideal man to be there. 😭 EDIT: To add, sad to hear not enough Christians participated in the voting, especially if there were still a lot at that time - replacement theology was still quite embedded in the psyche of Catholics and Orthodox at that time I think, and Vatican II wasn't a thing yet.

I don't think he was _intentionally_ set up to fail; and his appointment certainly wasn't the catastrophe that Allenby warned about. It was just a miscalculation. If perhaps he had been the brains behind the operation while someone else was in leadership, it'd probably have been more successful.
