Can the first system (parallel) be used for one stage of charging, in addition to a solar charge controller and panel? My thinking being that the deep cycle batteries are getting their 3 stages of charging from the solar, and getting 1 stage from the energy passing through the starter battery from the alternator??

Is your 7% figure per year price drop in lithium batteries accurate? I don't know the proper comparison points, but it seems wildly pessimistic to me. This video is coming up on 4 years old, and by my calculations LiFePO4 is now about $0.25/wh or less, or 1/4 of the video mentioned price. That would be an annual decline of 36%. For example, a $300/1280wh 12v100ah battery is $0.24/wh, but increasingly available for $200 or $0.16/wh; or a $1300/5120wh 48(actually 51.2)v100ah server rack battery comes out to $0.254/wh and cheaper rack batteries are available; or raw cells of 3.2v280ah are $100/896wh or $0.112/wh. Those prices often include shipping but may require buying multiple. On the other hand, it appears lead acid has increased by 50% to 100% since the video was published, accompanied by a similar increase in shipping costs (which are always significantly higher than the much lighter LiFePO4). My nearly 10 year experience with 20 raw LiFePO4 cells (Sinopoly 100ah in black plastic) has been very good (assembled into nominally 48v and 12v packs). Performance was much better than the 6v golf car batteries they replaced, even considering the lead acid started with 2x the nominal capacity. At the time they did cost me 2x what a new set of golf car batteries would have cost, but were "sealed" for no maintenance and promised considerably longer life. Both have been true.

2 questions...Would an inverter generator be safer on the circuitry of my victron inverter/charger and would I still size the generator the same as a conventional one...rule of thumb being 2x the Kw as the inverter/charger. Thanks

My gasoline generator is 105 decibels and my newer diesel generator which has more capacity than a bigger engine measures in at 71 to 72 decibels.

Worth noting that a lot of DC MCBs have magnetic arc suppression where a magnet directs the arc into the suppression chamber. These breakers have + and - indicated on the terminals and the polarity should match the source of fault current.

We just went through a power outage during a heat emergency where I live. It understandably has us asking a lot of questions about the best way to shore up our lives with generation when the grid goes down. One of my big questions was what the efficiency curve looks like for generators, and this helped a lot! It sounds like my best bet is to invest in some battery infrastructure so I can run our little generator at full hooch at all times, while I actively manage the storage. Thank you!

Smart alternators are the stupidest idea. More failure prone & complex to save a miniscule amount of fuel. That savings will never cover the increased repair costs. Another reason politicians and other "do gooder" fools need to keep their hands of things they Do NOT understand. Thanks OBUMA!

Excellent video and I am wondering if the "equalization" stage is what some people refer to as the "balancing" stage and if this stage is reached through the use of more current or simply a trickle charge over a long period of time

the current coming from the dynamo is a pulsating DC current. This pulsating DC current is changed to AC current by an inverter Circuit board. such generator uses permanent magnet dynamo to produce high voltage and current at low speeds. that's why these generators are much quieter, because less power is needed to run the dynamo.

OK, I get the dual battery system idea... But WHAT if I wish to use 2 alternators for each system (start battery and an aux. deep cycle battery)? That seems to me the best idea as then I won't have to worry at all about killing off any of of other devices I wish to use. How then is the best and proper way to set all this up? I no longer have the old Air Con in my van as it died and I really did not want to use it anyway seeing as I plan to mostly be off-road most of the time at slower speeds. I know it "CAN" be done but frankly I just need to learn just how set it up. I wanted to ONLY use the Starter Batter for 2 things: Start the car and use the Head Lamps... PERIOD. I wanted to use EVERYTHING ELSE for the radio/Amp set up, Short Wave Radio, the Off-Road Lights on top of the Van etc.. If I can just get one CLEAR AND UNDERSTANDABLE set of instructions I'll be off to the races as they say. PLEASE HELP!!! :)

Out of curiosity, in the last scenario, what purpose does the starter battery have? Could you then change it to another deep cycle? Would you want to have a start option also for cold winters? Starting a diesel in the cold on deep cycle might not be ideal.

As a comparison I just look at the basic math. Lithium cost 4-5x more than FLA but do they last 4-5x longer? The answer is NO (not even close) so I will continue to buy FLA until the price of Lithium is comparable.

Thanks for the concise information! Im making a decision to live in my SUV in southern California, a few hours north of Los Angeles. I absolutely need an alternative power-bank and the proper means to charge it. Versatility and adaptability will likely serve me best, but cost is what will hold me back. And this “project” is not something I have been able to prepare for- it sounds better that I made a choice instead of not having any other reasonable options for permanent living space, like a bedroom in a house. It’s so expensive, and I’m on fixed income and I can’t stand the idea of living check to check and becoming whatever that makes someone turn into. Summer is here, in the high desert, and temps are regularly 100 to 110 de degrees Fahrenheit. I must get a power system in my vehicle with an external (ideally 12V DC powered) air conditioner of some type. Im a military veteran so I understand that diesel vehicles are designed for continuous operation. Ive always heard that unleaded gasoline vehicles “don’t like” running for hours on end without actually driving/traveling. And gas would be very costly to do that. I hope i dont melt in the desert before i can put something really good and reliable together. I hope that this period will only last 2-5 years maximum. So whatever I get, i need it to last me 5 years to be safe. Im totally open to input and suggestions to consider before i start to purchase any of this equipment. Thanks

Thanks for sharing! If I would be in your shoes/flipflops, I would probably start off with mounting as much PV on my roof as reasonably possible, have a heavy duty alternator/portable generator as backup during overcast, and match your energy storage AND consumption to this setup. Good luck! Jesse
