In short, Leto II plots out a cure (preservation by oppression) that is worse than the disease (the eventual extinction of humanity). My take is that regardless of the measures taken by the God Emperor or the Bene Gesserit, humanity is doomed to destroy itself. This may sound nihilistic, but the books written by Frank Herbert, as convoluted as they became, seem to support this conclusion. I also believe that Herbert never meant to provide answers to all the questions he posed in his works.

The way Clare is the blandest most passive character in the whole book. Youre telling me she has NO family and friends in modern times? Nothing for her to miss? And btw the whole she grew up with archaeologist uncle who would take her on expeditions so she's been without modern amenaties before is bs. Im an archaeologist that has been without amenaties on digs. It sucks. I appreciate modern plumbing a whole lot more. No way in hell would I pick an abusive husband over dentistry. The whole book I was like girl. You are 20 fkin 7 post first wave feminism. stand UP

I loved this book so much, the character of Esther Greenwood felt so real and relatable at time that it was almost uncomfortable to see yourself in the pages of the book. Reading it made me feel so much I would recommend it to everyone!

I like where he used blank spaces to simulate passage of time invisible to the reader. The reader understands time has passed without being told. GOLDEN Tip.

I've not read the book yet but my impression of what Frank was trying to say, is that those with power ultimately seem to abuse it, whether they're the KH or not. Power is too much of a temptation. Even what Leto II tried to do caused mizzery and suffering to many people, despite his plan ultimately saving humanity. As to the threat the golden path is supposed to avoid, I believe it is machines. Leto talks about something always present and all you can do is run from it. I think he means machines. Perhaps he also means humans fighting each other to death until there is nothing left but whatever this threat is, I feel it has to come from outside our experience thus far. I believe the other element of the golden path is to ensure humans don't rely on the spice and cannot be manipulated by it in the same way as past generations. As for the turn to control by sex in the latter books, I've heard the writing is fairly terrible in parts and I confess I'm not looking oforward to this. One of the things I loved about the original Dune was that despite the women being so powerful and frankly so kick ass, sex was never used in quite this way. Perhaps a vaigue mention here and there but nothing outright like I've heard it is in these books.

I've read all the Dune books, and I do love them all. But, Heretics is the one with the most general writing issues. No one seems to have said it yet, but Frank Herbert was dealing with the death of his wife and his own diagnosis with Cancer while writing Heretics and Chapterhouse. I got the distinct vibe that he was racing the clock while trying to finish them. Frank Herbert's original goal was to have two trilogies of books with God Emperor as a bridge between them, but he died shortly after Chapterhouse was published. For those who don't like the Honored Matres... all right. But, Sword of Truth, Wheel of Time and the Drizzt books all have their own rip-offs of the Honored Matres, and they all sold. Also, Highlander the Series named their immortal swordsman "Duncan". Watch the opening of Highlander 2 (Planet Zeist) and it will all start to make sense. The God Emperor is neither Good nor Evil, he just sees everything and has to deal with that.

I honestly like Maxim-upon my first read I thought he was amazing, on my reread, I still think he’s awesome, but not so much because he’s charming as it is how real he is. (I mean, he’s still very handsome in my head, and get excited about the scenes with him), but my thoughts are definitely much different towards him upon rereading than my first time, at age 16.

Just finished this book recently and it was so enthralling. Really enjoyed hearing your opinion on it. 'We care and we're devastated' is such a succinct way to sum up the reading experience. I honestly wish there was another book that was as well written about the whole process of him and Harper Lee going to Kansas to gather the information. Your hair is soooo cute too.

Saoirse, I first found your channel a few years ago after reading Catcher in the Rye and looking for online reviews. I've watched most of your videos after the Catcher in the Rye. Sincere condolences on the loss of Springer and Katahdin. You made them both wonderful, touching, tribute videos, particularly the highlights at the end. Admittedly, I usually listen to videos rather than watch them, but I always took a break and watched the videos when they randomly interrupted your recordings (and often train of thought lol). On a side note, you had some really funny reactions in this video that made me laugh and rewind. All the best to you in this difficult time...

I feel like the ending of the book holds a lot more weight and impact than the first book. The whole second half seems to be Paul mired in despair and fatalism but at the end he does get a few final victories and still technically "wins" although he loses a future for himself.

Visited Jamaica Inn, on Bodmin moor, in the 80’s. Have a picture of myself and my Sister standing next to the resident parrot. Who supposedly lived there for 80 years. Anyway my Mother gave me this book to read recently. Throughly enjoyed it. And no it is definitely not a romance novel.

I had a strong dislike for Maxim. I doubt he loved anyone but himself. I know how the narrator feels when she creates scenarios in her head, I am guilty of this myself.. I watched a documentary about Daphne, and she herself experienced feelings of not being glamorous,or pretty enough for her husband. I loved the Hitchcock movie of this book. A "Gothic/Thriller' is how I would describe this story, the only romance is Mrs. Danvers "Love" for her mistress "Rebecca". She was obsessed with her.

Your enthusiasm for this book and the subject matter are apparent! It does seem like a truly magical time. I always say that we should focus on the history of such things as world’s fairs rather than politics and wars…it would certainly make history a more alluring field of study for students of all ages! 😊

Funny would have been Lady Catherine and Mrs Bennett finding common cause and bringing havoc to everyone else in the novel. Mrs Bennett's nerves are largely due to having been married to a professional troll who has been mocking her fears of for her daughters futures for more than twenty years. She is in a state of perpetual anxiety because Mr Bennett finds it hilarious and does everything he can to exacerbate it.

I love Austen's work but she does paint her characters and their stories like the reader is observing these people rather than feeling their stories. I believe that was one of Charlotte Bronte's critiques of Austen. The Female Quixote by Charlotte Lennox was a fun story about a woman immensely influenced by the romance novels she grew up with.

Animal and human sizes, I always pictured it as Muppet world. Where does the food come from? Probably, deliveries like the Shire in The Lord of the Rings. Best not worry about the economics. The comment did make me think about LotR and the similarities between the four main hobbits and the WitW animals. Frodo both wanting to stay at home yet go on adventures like Bilbo at the outset is very much like Mole. Rat living by the river boating and being a streetwise gentleman is very much like Merry at home in Buckland by the Brandywine River. Badger, all introverted and yet knowledgeable about the world as well as strongly loyal and brave is like Sam. Then there is the wealthy and carefree Toad messing around and often messing up is Pippin who is also heir to the biggest fortune around.

I liked it as a variation on The Twilight Zone. The old 60s show often used the same premise where a protagonist encounters an odd situation which creates an emotional re-evaluation for the protagonist. However, the book is very light weight on the concept.

Ive seen a few different reviews on the catcher on the rye, and i think what determines whether someone likes it or hates it is whether they relate to Holden or not. Some say they were really annoyed of him and spoke of how insufferable and unlikeable he is. I'm 15, turning 16 in a few months and just read the book, and i suppose i like it because he's a very relatable character at times - from the depression to little things like how getting gifts makes him sad - so i cant actually dislike him and actually did like him from the start. Always good to hear peoples opinions on it.

This narrator was a complete narcissist and a hypocrite when it came to how she’d talk about her best friend Reva. I stopped feeling sorry for her around halfway through the book. She was so observant and smart supposedly when it came to everybody except for Trevor and the way she treated her best friend was awful. Her best friend would do something so small and not really a big deal and she’d be ready to kick her to the curb. But Trevor would do something monumentally disrespectful and she wouldn’t give up 😂😂😂

From my understanding the reason the Kwisatz Haderach is a male is because males possess an X and Y chromosome. Where as women only have X chromosomes. This allows males to look into both male and female memory and not be repulsed. The Bene Geesserit train women to be able to handle the flood of memory and emotion of past memory. The men are left to alone to figure it out and what it means. ( you know Big Boys Don't Cry and all that nonsense) It kind of sucks to be a Kwisatz Haderach. You're doomed to a life time of loneliness, self loathing and yet everyone wants you to be everything except who you are. It is especially bad when you have no teachers and no peers to share you deepest sorrows. If this sounds familiar....it should. Think of a heterosexual man you've known who was brilliant but closed off, incredibly sensitive and not vunderable in any way. That is a lonely existance and a lot to endure for any being.

What I learned from God Emperor Dune is that no one person, no one philosophy, no ones idea of humanity should rule Humanity. Good can be just as tyrannical as evil. And one person's or group's morality is a knife at the throat of another.
