What income do you fall back on when you are not mowing every week because the turf does not need ro cut. Weather is a variable you cannot control no matter how many pieces of equipment you have.

@@mikeperry1620 great question, we are profitable enough through the season to maintain a separate business “oh crap” fund and we take advantage of the time to get equipment and vehicle maintenance done.

My buddy has a 61” Wright ZK stander. I have a 61” Vride. Same tire size (24x12x12). But he tears turf up all the time when he turns. I rarely do. And I think part of it is due to the controls. I think he gets lazy since he has to do some more hand movements to turn properly.
@Gardslawns

Interesting, must be operating error or bad tire selection we don’t tear up any grass unless the turf is super wet.

I always thought to myself that the advanced chute blocker may be better thought out because the holes are their to preserve the vacuum of the mower. One of the things I noticed with the cheap chute blocker I have now that when I have to use it to cut a strip it will leave a small trail of grass clumps right at the discharge point. I always thought that this would help with that but if it does indeed throw a considerable amount of grass through it I may be looking for something else like the Quickchute.

Gonna drop a video hopefully this weekend on the setup/ pricing update. I hope it helps! We just trimmed back to 60 mowing clients to increase capacity. Ultimately the amount of accounts is irrelevant after 20 or so. At that point for a smaller company you need to have pricing insanely profitable.

Learned a lot, thanks. I may lower my mowing rates since I'm just getting started. For me, it's going to be retirement extra spending cash anyway. Goal is around 10 yards or so. As far as landscaping, at 64 I'm trying to stay away from it,lol. I'll do some tilling for $50/hr, but if I have to weed and mulch it's $125/hr which is considerably less than what our market is.

Fill the schedule and raise your prices. Even if it’s a part time thing or just extra cash this is hard work and the equipment doesn’t last forever! Also your industry needs everyone to have appropriate pricing 😉

Hey Damian, how’s it going? Great content! I’ve used SCAG for years. My 48” vride 1 gave out this year. I bought a vride 2 and I just don’t like it. I mean it’s a powerful and fast mower but it’s not as compact as my vride 1. My vride 2 does not stripe as good and its to bulky. They don’t make mowers like they used too. I’ll be rebuilding the motor on the vride 1 and have the vride 2 as a back up.

If anyone watching this is struggling, use my mantra, "If I keep going I will succeed." It's easy to find reasons to quit. In my second year it was rain everyday in the summer and I was using a Craftsman 21" push mower (money management is a real thing) cutting overgrown, wet grass. This year, my area has only received an inch and a half of rain since late February, so I've been doing more landscaping work. Don't give up, find a way, and you will succeed.

Excuses are easy to come by when things aren’t going right. I always think back to a sermon I heard as I started my journey back with Christ. It was a sermon about relationships but applies to all aspects of life. To summarize it was about when things get tough do you sit down, rest, turn around and go back? None of that is correct you walk through and put one foot in front of the other. Winners win, it’s as easy as that. No matter the circumstances we figure it out and move forward.

No money cutting grass? 😂 Seems like whoever saying that needs to make some pricing adjustments. Now granted sometimes it’s hard to obtain mowing customers at a profitable price margin for yourself but when you do get them then you got ‘em for awhile and when you don’t … we’ll? Ya don’t.

Scag only cuts so well due to factory rollers on the back of the deck that is essentially a stripe kit. Yes i said it. I got the same motor on my bobcat zs4000. I do like the cut from scag not bashing it in any way, just saying its the only deck that has rollers on the bottom that folds grass ;)
