In fact the parthion was dedicated to Athena goddess of wisdom, (Minerva is her Latin name). The main temple for Zeus was near where the Olympic games were held.

Hi. Just found your channel. I live at the southern tip of Ohio. I’ve had a couple goes at Brussels sprouts. Last year, wow! 5ft tall plants. Varying times in maturity of the sprouts. But, the time I took the largest harvest was Thanksgiving. I would love a recommendation on a variety you think might work well here...if you wouldn’t mind guesstimating. Curious of how you time when to start seeds what temps or conditions you like to plant in. Thanks. I’ll be watching more. Love your passion!

Hello! Our recommendations for our easiest-to-grow Brussels Sprouts for home gardeners and small growers are DAGAN and MARTE. Dagan is available as organic seed as well, in addition to conventional seed. For a later crop (Christmas harvest) I would recommend NAUTIC. Both DAGAN and MARTE mature in about 105 days after transplanting, but the maturity can vary when there is a lot of heat stress during summer. (Southern Ohio can get pretty warm). More stress means less uniform maturity, and less uniform sizing, and generally also shorter plants. It is important that Brussels Sprouts get adequate irrigation during the hot parts of summer. While they don’t necessarily show stress like other crops (squash, corn, lettuce, etc.), Brussels Sprouts will stop growing when they get hot and dry. The plants will resume growth when temperatures get cooler and soil moisture is replenished by rain or irrigation. Earlier planting (transplanting in mid-May) will lead to many over-sized sprouts that begin to decay (black sooty mold, yellow leaves, blooming sprouts) while the middle and top sprouts are still small. But, early planting also gives earlier yield - you just have to be aware and be ready to pick the lower sprouts when their quality is still good. Mid-season planting (transplanting in mid-June) often gives a nice balance between size and quality. Lower sprouts can still get a bit “funky”, but total yield and size will be quite good. Late-season planting (transplanting in mid-July) will lead to very good quality in fall, but size of the sprouts will be smaller and total yield will be lower. To get the best length (and the most sprouts) the plants should get plenty of fertility and constant soil moisture early in the season. It is important to grow a tall plant as quickly as possible, before summer stress inhibits growth. Most fertility should be provide in the first half of the season, and the plants should run out of fertility in fall. The leaves should turn yellow and fall off, leaving a naked stem with sound sprouts. Too much fertility in late season means that the leaves will stay green, the sprouts do not fill enough, and harvest maturity is delayed. Also, it is more difficult to pick the sprouts when the leaves are still attached to the stem. Keep an eye on the “wings” (outer wrapper leaves of the sprouts). If the wings turn yellow you should add a little Nitrogen to the soil - it will turn those wings green quickly for a nice fresh look. (Dagan will likely need a little extra N in late season. Marte and Nautic will likely be fine without additional N in late season.) It takes a few years to learn how to grow good Brussels Sprouts, so don’t get discouraged when the crop is not perfect. Reduce stress as much as possible, and work with grower-friendly varieties, like DAGAN, MARTE and NAUTIC. Happy Growing! Jan van der Heide- Northeast Market Manager, Bejo USA

@@bejo_usa I can not THANK YOU enough for your reply and sharing such detailed expertise with me. Getting doused with rain and some cooler weather to follow...so if I can stay ahead of the worms and (now) harlequin bug invasion, I might pull off another good run. Last time, lower leaves did die off gradually from the bottom up and I would keep them removed. When late summer rolled around, I picked off a lot more. Maybe I had over fertilized them, because they were still going! I finally pinched out the tops to get the sprouts growing. Good to know also that I can pull some as they develop. One more question! I’ve yet to start from seed...how old of a transplant shall I shoot for if planting out in summer.
