We'll never see a pitcher hit a homerun ever again in the post season (maybe Shohei). I like the DH in both leagues but this kind of a moment won't ever happen again. That said....the strategy of no DH takes away from the game, makes the manager less important...

Despite the Astros domination of the NL Central in 1998, the Cardinals actually won the season series 7-5, including winning 3 out of 6 in Houston. It’s a far cry from 3-9 against the Astros in 1997 or 11-2 against the Astros in 1996.

The Edmonds catch early in the game to save at least one run (possibly more) was huge, but I think the biggest key to that game was the Pujols at-bat in the sixth inning with the tying run on third and two outs. Clemens had Pujols down 1-2 in the count but couldn’t put him away, and Pujols drove in the tying run, and on the next pitch, Rosen hit the two run home run. Had Clemens gotten Pujols out, it would hav been 2-1 Astros after 6 innings, with a chance to go to Lidge for a much as three innings (keeping in mind that Lidge also pitched three innings in game 6). They also could have used Oswalt for an inning or two (if Clemens couldn’t continue), which they eventually did go to Oswalt, but it was too late to save the Astros at that point.
@cardinalsbaseballclassics
@cardinalsbaseballclassics Ай бұрын
I see what you're saying, but I disagree. If the ball Ausmus hit were to have gotten by Edmonds, that would have made it at least 2-0 Houston, and possibly 3-0. With Clemens due to hit next, I think it's highly likely the Astros would have sent Vizcaino home if there was any chance he would have been able to score. That means you would have most likely been looking at either a 2-0, or 3-0 score with runners at second and third, or a runner at second, and one out. Most likely, the Astros leave the inning up by at least three, and who knows how many more. That catch changed the entire complexion of that inning, and that game. Yes, the Pujols at bat was big, but if the Cardinals are down 3 or more early, that Pujols at bat might not have really mattered by the time the later innings rolled around. Even if Pujols hadn't come through in that situation, had everything else played out the same way, they still would have only been down by one run with a tiring Clemens on the hill, and a Houston bullpen that was running out of gas behind him.

@@cardinalsbaseballclassics I respect your opinion, and there are some good points as well. There were also a couple plays that didn’t go so well that could have cost us. As good as the Edmonds catch was, he made a throwing error in the next inning to allow the second run to score. I think we had a pickoff in another inning that cost us a chance at a big inning. But overall, the Cardinals got the big hits when they needed, and the Astros really missed some prime scoring chances in the first 4 or 5 innings of that game. If you let the 2004 Cardinals hang around with that offense in a close game, sooner or later, they will make you pay. I wish I could say the same for the 2024 Cardinals.
