It is very interesting to me - as a Spanish - how similar this is to the Catholic processions, especially in Spain. Shia Islam has a lot of similarities with Christianity, especially Catholicism - emphasis on martyrs, suffering, crying, community... praying to saints... and even something like priests or bishops. Sunni Islam on the other hand is much more similar to Protestantism: "each person is his own priest" (therefore, more individualism), usually literalistic interpretation of the Sacred text, less emphasis on love, etc. Hossein Nasr does say somewhere that Shiism is like the reflection of Christianity within Islam, and Protestantism is the reflection of Islam within Christianity. And for this I do think that Iran and Spain should be natural allies. Well, except that Spain is not Catholic or traditional anymore, now we are just "Europe". Or worse: America. Liberalism has destroyed everything...
