In the old days a man is born in Donegal and when he is 16 what does he do he jumps to the UK or the US to survive

A great song indeed. Not from Donegal myself. My family hail from West Cork which is a very different place altogether. Living in Central America for the past twenty years. My kids speak Spanish and hardly a word of English between them.

Long as we lived.

I've just dropped in to see you all I'll only stay awhile I want to hear how you're getting on I want to hear you smile I'm happy to be back again And greet you big and small For there's no place on earth just like The homes of Donegal I long to see your smiling children Standing by the door The kettle boiling on the hearth As I walk up the floor And then to see a welcome free For travellers one and all For your hearts are like your mountains In the homes of Donegal I'd like to stay along with you And while away the night With fairy lore and tales of yore Beside the turf fire bright And then to see laid out for me A shake-down by the wall For there's rest for weary wanderers In the homes of Donegal the time has come for me to go And bid you all adieu For the open highway calls me back To do these things I do But when I'm travelling far away Your friendship I'll recall And please God I'll soon return unto The homes of Donegal Donegal, Pride of all Donegal, Pride of all

Such a beautiful song. Sums up how most people living abroad feel when they go home. I wish he did a version for every county in Ireland so all of us living abroad had something to sob about😂

The first one to popularize this ballad was a guy called Charlie McGee in the late 50's. It was played almost every Saturday on Radio Eireann ( Irish Radio) in a programme called The Walton Programme ....Paul (I think ) recorded it in the 70's..They used to name the singer.."Charlie McGee and his gay guitar"...

Been a Paul Brady fan for about 30 years. Been to Donegal, too. The only song of his that brings tears more often is “The Island”. He is truly Ireland’s Dylan...

Bob Dylan met Paul to ask him how to play Lakes of Pontchartrain, and he did but Dylan couldn’t technically do it so he just does it his own way which is not nearly as good😊

Here's to Aunt Eileen gone to Heaven leaving us with the fine memories of a life well lived. Just a wee lass who came to America and made a great life for herself and her family but stayed the girl from Donegal. Rest In Peace Aunt Eileen till we meet again.
