I was really disappointed with 8's initial release. After all the updates, the game really turned into one deserving the "Best Mario Kart Ever Made" title. I do still have a few tiny gripes (item balance/missed opportunities/track level design), but they're all miniscule to the amount of praise I could give it at this point.
@Mach5Mike26 күн бұрын
It’s funny, I remember not being cool with having to pay $60 for 8 Deluxe on Switch, after seeing it was going to have a lot of fixes I wanted to see the Wii U game get, but my tune changed almost immediately after I started playing it. Double dipping was totally worth it for how much more I played and enjoyed the Switch version, especially when the BCP came into the picture.
@acecarrera127 күн бұрын
I just marvel how imaginative the level design is, something that doesn't come automatically with newer graphics.
@Mach5Mike27 күн бұрын
Very true, I'd love to see what a new Mario Kart game can do with track design that incorporates both 8's anti-gravity and Tour's multiple routes, they have a lot more ways to play with an environment's real estate now!

"We have Unbound at home." Unbound at home: I know the artstyle isn't for everyone but NFS fandom back then would hate on anything that isn't Most Wanted. Some even now. 360/PS3 is an era of edgyness and Wii's mere presence is the very bane of those so-called hardcore gamers' existence. I played this on emulator with keyboard and it was already a breath of fresh air, but when I got a Wii and played it with Wiimote it somehow becomes extremely addictive! And this is supposed to be a party game in which the Career is just copy-pasted races! Also I usually hate Teslas for what they represent but tell me in the eyes that Tesla shooting out LIGHTNING as nitro is not cool. Oh BTW, soundtrack is ASTRONOMICALLY better than whatever shit is in Unbound.

I'm still playing the game regularly, it's just too addictive. I wish there are less bots and less punishment for when you crash out or don't beat any rivals (the progress loss is big at above S). Maybe more tracks and random generating tracks such as the X cup in F-Zero X would be perfect. I'm probably asking too much though, as the game is basically kind of "free". What we got is a superb game. EDIT: Oh, by the way, please, remove Team Battle. We'll get more often Classics, Mini Prix, etc. It's so much better.

Speaking of Genki games, have you compared different handling models between Daytona USA 2001 and Tokyo Xtreme Racer games? Genki sure did different handling models in racing games as experiments, until Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift (2003, but US release delayed till 2006) getting more realistic on that front with help of real-life racing drivers in Japan.

While I do own Tokyo Xtreme Racer on Dreamcast, haven’t ever compared them like that before. Perhaps I’ll have to revisit and cover it (or one of the sequels) here on the channel someday.

The original Ridge Racer was the first game I owned for the PS1, and I followed the series through RR Revolution and then Rage Racer, playing them constantly. When R4 launched, it was obvious from the beginning that it was a cut above everything else out at the time. That's saying a lot, because the PS1 was still in its glory days. It seemed as though each sequel or continuation of an existing franchise was better than the last, with the developers constantly pushing beyond the envelope of what was thought possible just a year earlier. R4, at the time, felt light years ahead. Beyond the improvement in the graphics and handling, Namco dropped the player into what felt like a fully-realized world, with a culture whose identity was built around the race. Often as I flew through the scenery, I found myself wanting to explore the buildings of the cities and the rolling hills and valleys of the sun kissed countryside. As mentioned in the video, the music is some of the best in the series and so far beyond anything else found in other racing games that it certainly deserved the limited OST release it was given overseas. Although I still have a PS2 and my original copy, these days I play the game via emulater with graphics upscaled to 4K widescreen, simulated Surround Sound and with throttle and brakes remapped to the triggers. It's as fun now as it was then, and the upscaled resolution allows me to finally see the fine details and touches the artists includedas an obvious labor of love. Of the subsequent games in the series, only Ridge Racer 7 on the PS3 has left me with the same feeling of awe and immersion, some 8 years after the release of 4. That's a testimonial to the greatness of this game.

The movement looks way too snappy and automatic for my liking especially when it comes to air control. The game seems alright. It'll be interesting seeing what this editor is capable of. I'm spoiled by Distance though. I don't know if Rocket Racing has surpassed it, but it's certainly the closest one next to Trackmania.
@Mach5Mike3 ай бұрын
You know what? Because you brought up Distance, you’ll be happy to know (and the first to know) that it’s actually the next game I’m covering, so hope you’re looking forward to it when it’s ready! (I’ll have to cut back on my Rocket Racing time a bit to work on it XD) In regards to the air control, I get what you mean about it being snappy/automated, but because of how quick you have to make some maneuvers, things like automatically snapping towards walls I found to be very helpful.

I wish i got to play this game, maybe if it was more successful it would have gotten a pc port (i didn't and still don't have a ps4/xbox one so i couldn't play it). But it just wasn't what people were looking for, it wasn't "traditional" enough, I guess. I remember hearing people complaining about the lack of actual racing and were thrown off by the heavy focus on team objectives. Now it's becoming another "Man I can't believe we slept on this" game to join the pile. And the worst part is the failure of this game made Codemasters loose pretty much all confidence in Evolution, so many talented people were laid off (including the director of this game) and what's left currently serves as support for Criterion (after DiRT 5 didn't do well either).

With Rocket Racing's new season of content coming today, figured it's a perfect time to ask (and have this video done!), which cars from Rocket League do you want to race with in Rocket Racing?

It should be noted that as of the latest patch, Dryboosting is no longer a high risk/high reward tactic. There is a large delay once you run out of Power where you can't boost and you can no longer rapidly boost in a 0 Power state. In short, you do NOT want to be empty on power unless you're passing the finish line ASAP.
@Mach5Mike3 ай бұрын
Yeah, it would've been cool if I could have included details from the latest patch (which also had machine buffs/nerfs and the mirror tracks) in this video since I covered so many updates already, but I had to eventually hit a stopping point and finish this thing.
