I don't think I've ever commented, but I adore you both. Jordyn, I also went to NDSU and now work there! I totally feel triggered by Jordyn's discussion about her cheap dad. My dad is the same. I hate it. My husband's parents are the opposite - very generous and always picking up the tab. I am 35, have been married several years, and have two sweet, little, precious ones. You seem very accepting of your dad, but I got to a point where I was done with it. Why is my dad trying to basically make money off of me? What will happen to all of his money when he dies (he's leaving it to me and my siblings)? He doesn't need it all, can't he realize he should enjoy it NOW? He's had decades of working and saving and while my husband and I have worked SO HARD to be where we are, obviously, my parents are much better off financially. I see them paying the tab at dinner or paying for a vacation occasionally is them encouraging and supporting us as we grow financially. My dad is also the non-flexible one, like your dad. I love my parents, both of them. But I guess after the layers of a husband and children came into the picture, I sort of had to pull away. The behavior stopped being acceptable to me. Tiptoeing around his schedule all of my life as a child was enough, but now I'm an adult with own little children to manage I don't need to manage HIS childish behaviors as well... I think a big thing for me was - I just lost the capacity to have grace for those behaviors. I needed my capacity for grace to be used to for my children and husband and others who were also willing to give me grace back. I wasn't willing to use it on my dad any longer. After multiple conversations with him and my mom, I did come to a point where I pulled back. My door is always open to them, but I am putting less effort into seeing them...I see my mom more, as she puts effort into seeing me (they are married, she just comes alone). Anyway, I'm not trying to impose my feelings on you. Just sharing how the relationship and acceptance of those poor behaviors has developed over the years. Again, adore you both. Alex, I am DYING over your beautiful baby shower photos. Your mother-in-law and sister-in-law did a beautiful job! I am so enjoying following your new journey.
