From the US, and I would love to see the Scotsman fly alongside our 4014 Big Boy. Two legends of the line, let out to stretch their legs. I know it's not likely to happen, as Big Boy is too big to ship to the UK (or run on her tracks, for that matter) and I doubt the UK would let the Scotsman come back after last time. Still, a man can dream

Seeing footage of mallards 1985 restoration process to bring her into steam for the 50th of her record. Is utter insanity. I’ve never once heard there’s was footage of that process during said restoration before. It’s like legit holy grail shit. Thank you so much for

We met 4472 when she was in Australia in 1988. We took part in a parallel run into Sydney between 4472 and New South Wales’s prime locomotive 3801. That was a thrilling experience which I still have on film on KZfaq. It is entitled LNER FLYING SCOTSMAN 4472 ON ITS AUSTRALIAN TOUR 1988. Graham Wilcox

This was Great Steam Trains in the states. THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing! Enjoyed these programs so much from PBS that I recorded them off to audio cassette and enjoyed them more when the VHS stopped working- and those were transferred from BETA. Sure wish I could find all them on DVD.

All of that onerous work just to see her painted in the livery of the company which would have seen her scrapped. It’s utterly lamentable.

I am willing to pay double, triple , quadruple or even square the price of 1st class to travel inside the cabin of the steam engine.

In the exact year that this trial was held, The Delaware and Hudson Canal Company purchased from Britain a locomotive very similar to the Sans Pareil called the Stourbridge Lion. A deputy engineer, Horatio Allen, was sent to England in 1828 to see if the new English locomotives would be suitable for the company’s use in transporting coal from near Carbondale in the Moosic Mountains of Pennsylvania. Horatio Allen, and John B. Jervis the president of the company ordered four engines and rails. One was contracted to Robert Stephenson & Company of Newcastle based on the same plans as the famous 0-2-2 Rocket while three others were built by Foster, Rastrick & Company of Stourbridge. They placed orders for four engines and rails. Stephenson's design was named America and the first to arrive in the States, unloaded in New York on January 15, 1829 at a cost of $3,663.30 (including delivery). The other three machines from Foster, Rastrick & Company crossed the Atlantic a few months later. The famous Stourbridge Lion was delivered on May 13th (at a total cost of $2,914.90) while the Delaware ($2,944.40) and Hudson ($2,992.90) arrived later that summer. In a strange turn of events, only the Lion was actually tested by the Delaware & Hudson. The America made a quick demonstration run in New York on May 27th, as did the Lion a day later on May 28th, 1829. This was 5 months before the Rainhill Trials. After wowing onlookers in an event that could be argued as the first-ever utilization of steam locomotives on American soil, the duo were shipped up the Hudson to Rondout (near Kingston). From there they were to be shipped over the canal to Honesdale. Very strangely, the fate of the other 3 locomotives is today unknown. The Stourbridge Lion was successfulbut deemed too heavy for the early tracks, It was put into storage and later scavenged for its boiler. In 1933, the company's shops in Colonie, New York built an exact replica of the 0-4-0 Lion for the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago. Today, the little machine sits on display in Honesdale, Pennsylvania owned by the Wayne County Historical Society.

As someone who has lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana, I have had the pleasure of knowing an original steam icon is operating in my hometown. I know that the US has more steam icons by the day, with Sierra Railway 3, UP 4014, Pere Marquette 1225, and more, but even with my favorite being the Restoration Queen, Nickel Plate 765, the Scotsman is so visually striking I can’t help but find a soft spot in my heart for it.

It's crazy how people are getting more and more interested in old stuff. From clothes to locomotives. I guess they feel that these are things that help us connect to better times. Life was hard back then, but not as miserable as it is today.
