To be honest fig trees are just as annoying as ants, their roots get everywhere even destroying pipes and they refuse to die even after you cut them down.

NIce hi-tech gadget. I suppose you could add a bit of citric acid to put the level where you want it without additional flavors.

The key is getting the hot tomatoes in the hot jars quickly and get the lids on.
@clyftonhearn1804Күн бұрын
So by adding onions are you saying they won't seal?
@useful.knowledgeКүн бұрын
No. They will seal. However, adding thing may cause the overall acidity to be too low for open kettle or water bath canning. They could seal and because the acidity is low, botulism could live. They would need to be pressure canned.

I do can my tomatoes just like you do. No pressure canner or water bath. I like the open kettle method. Been doing this for years

In Canada I have found that the last 2 or 3 years, the quality of your main brands (Bernardin in particular) have seriously gone down hill!! Not only have I had an occasional lid fail, but I have had so many faulty jars its been crazy! I have had more faulty jars and lids the past 3 years than ALL 7 or 8 previous years combined! Shame on these companies for cutting corners! We have noticed and now I buy all I can through a company called For Jars. So far so good! Please take a close look at the jars you buy prior to using them. Last year I used 3 cases of new jars to get ONE good case! The Bernardin jars were such poor quality you could see the flaws with your naked eye!
@useful.knowledge2 күн бұрын
Hi. Same here. I’m definitely seeing something different. Even the lids sound different when they seal.
@jenniferpepler5843Күн бұрын
@@useful.knowledgeNot sure if you have heard of a company called "For Jars". Their lids are good quality at a reasonable price. I have had no issues with them. I try and get all my canning supplies through them now.

Please can someone tell me how long after filling the jars and closing them should I see a seal on the lid? I filled them up 10 hrs ago and don’t see the seal yet.
@useful.knowledge4 күн бұрын
Press the center of the lid. If it pushes down and pops back up, it’s not sealed. Did you fill the jars up while the tomatoes were still very hot?
@Xiomara2224 күн бұрын
@@useful.knowledge Yes! Jars and sauce were very hot.
@Xiomara2224 күн бұрын
Maybe I closed them too tight?

@@useful.knowledgeThank you I will do that! And I appreciate your video. I did 3 jars two days ago and they sealed perfectly.
@koedishakir51264 күн бұрын
How do you know they are sealed other than hearing the ping?
@useful.knowledge4 күн бұрын
Once they cool down, press the center. If it pops back up, the jar is not sealed. If they ping or sometimes thump, they are almost always sealed.

If you put the lids on too tight, it is almost impossible to just twist off the lid, when it comes time to use. Finger tight is all they need.

I have used your method in making jam..It was a big fail... I did everything to the tee just like you did. It did not thicken at all, i am very disappointed to say the least, but at least I can use it over ice cream..

It could be your peaches have more juice in them than normal. It does happen in different years. Set the heat low and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes to see if that will get some of the moisture out and thicken it up. Also, did you reduce the sugar?

Good video and information. I carry a couple ways to make fire, Bic in an Exotac Fire Sleeve for one and a "ferro rod". A tea candle also can be carried in a fire kit and has some usefulness. The Hug-A-Tree program is free now and offers some useful tips for those who hike with youth. As for some of your commenters, in the years since their comments I wonder if we have read articles about recovery operations or them drinking water from their boots? Appreciate you getting the word out. SAR's job is easier when people have knowledge, skills, and the correct gear.

Hi, my tank got denied when I went in for a refill at BJs. The guy claimed it didn’t have a sticker so he can’t refill it. But when I went to exchange it at Walmart, the new tank didn’t have a sticker. Did I get lied to or was he telling the truth?
