I'm sorry to hear you're having a bit of a time with barre chords, but they are worth the work. Here are some thoughts for you: Try these exercises on the 7th fret so there is less string tension, this will also allow your fretting hand to lay fairly flat. Remember to take it easy: Start by just barring across 2 or 3 strings with your index, making note of how close your finger needs to be to the fret, and check to make sure your finger creases are not right over where the strings are. Then move this to different frets and work on getting a clean sound as you go. You won't be perfect, this will take time and work, but as you focus on the mechanics of the barre shape your technique will improve. When you feel comfortable with the one shape, try barring more strings, then making a different barre chord shape. Make note of your fingertips when making chords, you need to ensure that your fingertips aren't touching other strings as this will deaden the sound. My fretting hand has very short nails to help with this. Now, something to keep in mind is that I don't know how high the action is on your instrument (distance between strings and fretboard), or if there are any neck issues with the instrument. Take your time and see how things go over a period of a couple of weeks. Then if you are still having a tricky time with the basic barre chord shape (one finger across the strings), see if you can get a hold of another instrument to play (a music store, or maybe you know someone who plays?) If there is an issue with the instrument itself then it's likely a trip to a repair shop will help it. Best of luck!!
