When I was 12, still in Primary school my folks bought me a small boxy looking transistor radio for my Birthday, I was delighted with it, it was a gateway to the world, I listened to it every night in bed. I distinctly remember this song coming on, and how great a song it was. That was 1971. I can still remember the smell of it when it warmed up, Strange what 1 song can do to you,

Hangover Sunday … decided to play this song on repeat most of the day through my AirPods. Had to blame my puffy eyes in hayfever. Takes me back. Don’t know where we lost humanity but we did but it somehow lives in us still. World changed too much lately and this song makes me ache for the old days to return so my kids can life that way. I’m an R&B girl but this is in my top 5 all time. That line makes me sob ….

I am from the UK and in this song I see a man chasing the American dream. So intern he is hard working and the thing that keeps him going is his love for his woman. The sad thing is the American dream is just a carrot on a string. If you do make it to the top there is no grantee of happiness.

I thank God for Jimmy Webb what an incredibly gifted man who had so much heartbreak he wrote about it. His music has been a huge part of my life since my Father would play The 5th Dimension Margic Garden album when i was just a baby..Webb's music has been with me ever since. I'm 54 now. Thank you Jimmy Webb and my Father 🙏

A piece of tranquility from a generation past. The man makes his claim. He loves her from afar. He has his job, which is to love her from a distance prescribed, and carry on. I can't try to relate this to 21st century.

Thank you Michael Ball for paying tribute to Steve Wright in keeping his program alive and carrying on the baton to the future. And playing this song as “The Last Dance.” Steve Wright would be proud of you for it.

My dad worked as a lineman for Hawaiian Electric in the 60, when I was a kid and I remember seeing him on the poles . He moved us to Oregon in 1970 and worked for PGE in all kinds of weather not climbing poles but maintaining transformers until his death in 1998. He loved this song and I often play it to think about him climbing those poles!

I am a lineman for the county And I drive the main road Searchin' in the sun for another overload I hear you singing in the wire I can hear you through the whine And the Wichita lineman Is still on the line I know I need a small vacation But it don't look like rain And if it snows that stretch down south Won't ever stand the strain And I need you more than want you And I want you for all time And the Wichita lineman Is still on the line And I need you more than want you And I want you for all time And the Wichita lineman Is still on the line

Once upon a time, there was an ordinary lineman who lived in Wichita, Kansas. He was corn-fed. He fell in love with the admiral's daughter. However, she was engaged to some British officer. The Wichita lineman was broken-hearted.

I grew up 20 miles outside Wichita. When this song was released in 1967, it would be playing on the radio, on a record player, on a Public Announcement system, or in an advertisement at least once every 15 minutes. It's such an excellent song that it still sounds great after being overplayed. Those lush, vivid colors of the Kansas sky in the video make me homesick. Kansas is the most beautiful place that I ever lived.
