The minerals are part of the rocks and soil. As they dissolve in water they are carried to the oceans. This has been happening for billions of years so the ocean is salty.

Are there any species that will naturally return salt to nearby water, or already salty water? I'm setting up an ecosphere with multiple water types, and need a mechanism to maintain balance between them.

I don't know of any. Best case they put back in what they take out. I know know of any that can make the water saltier or less salty.

So I am going to post a public comment and if a past teacher of mine happens to see it while online that would be quite a coincidence. I missed 1 question on the 8th-grade science EOG as my actual score it might go higher if they remove the question that I missed from the final scores.

This is the released version. It is not the actual North Carolina EOG. But it was created by the state as an example of what the test would look like.
