Crossbows are huge in Ohio. Harvest would be reduced dramatically if they were illegal. If I sent you a picture of my 2 neighbors that shot nice bucks with crossbows last year you would see that those guys are not picking up a compound bow to shoot a deer. It's probably not even possible for them. It would flat elimnate a bunch of hunters in Ohio who would more than likely just go back to gun hunting. (which crossbow hunting is pretty close to gun hunting

From South Dakota. Hunting would suck if bait8ng was legal because guys like the doctor who neighbor my land would be able to afford however much corn they could dream of but i cant afford any corn. So his 160 acres would be loaded with deer taken off of my land because i cant afford what that guy can.

And to the one of you that doesn’t like SD cams…not sure of your experience on them vs cell but my experience is many deer and especially mature bucks pick up on something from cell cams on video mode…year after year my SD cams have significantly more traffic and repeat bucks. This is across many different brands. My reveals seem to be the worst as far as alerting deer.

That makes more sense than lobbying for an outright ban. Issue seems to me though, most people spending obscene amounts of money on rural ground, aren't from the area. They are folks from the city, displacing the natives. It ain't anything new, its happened here before.

so do corn fields that have corn laying around after harvest produce this toxin or only bagged corn? what about an over abundance of oak trees and acorns are left lying around? the truth is deer populations and turkey populations cannot be determined by reported harvest numbers. state and federal agencies will skew these numbers to be able to get funding so that they can increase their budgets through more studies. i think it is a bunch of baloney with very little real info behind it. But it would be a great way to keep regular folk from being able to potentially pull a big buck off off of a neighboring farm. Now if you want to end all hunting over food including food plots and ag fields i am on board but to just try and squeeze out the little guy is wrong.

Why the heck do so many idiots that are drivers of the problem feel the need to post how they disagree with this podcast but they're listening to it? Most Ohioans are missing how good things actually are, as well as, how shitty they are as hunters (and that they keep the state down from its potential). The closer you get to the an ocean the lazier hunting practices get.

Where are we supposed to hunt? Public land? No thanks. Last time I tried to hunt public land tha game warden wouldn't leave us alone and kept scaring away game and then I left with birdshot in my back. Now it was was from a pretty good distance away and I had a heavy coat on so the like 6 pellets that made it under my skin were easily removed by my buddies wife at the kitchen table but I'm good on going back.

Yeah everyone wants to say let's promote hunting and I agree we should but when states have been making it harder and harder to go hunt whitetail and land prices and leases go up. Where is the opportunity for middle class working people who deer hunt? I don't make crazy money and rely on OTC public land. Now my state raised the licenses to $700 per season, and they are talking about going draw for non residents. How is that beneficial for the hunting community outside of residents? My home state of Texas is majority private land and the public land you do get is wayyy over pressured. The sport is becoming a rich man's game and it sucks for people who wanna try and shoot a big buck without buying land or a lease. love the podcast! Y'all put out great content.

Problem is access to affordable land most, especially as a older hunter, that you don't have to walk too extremely far when you have health issues. The problem is decreasing hunting opportunities. A freakin lease costs thousands and most people, like me, hunt really small properties. I hunt a skinny but long 20 acres. This means hunting deer is very difficult, especially since being within 20 0 yards or corn is illegal. I'm 30 mins south of Atlanta been Urban hunting since 2005. Not gonna lie I was not a happy camper when the cat was out of the bag. City deer are smarter than people give them credit. Some of the areas these deer live are places the can't build on. So it's super thick. Trying to hunt the edges of the thick stuff can be tricky to access.

Even if its made illegal whether its baiting, cell cams, or even simply not buying a license/tag nothing will be enforced unless it has 200" of bone on top of its head. The ODNR or DOW wont care enough about how many doe's or younger bucks are taken illegally to even worry about enforcing it. CJ Alexander proved that this past season. You think he is the only person who killed a deer on property he didnt have permission to be on that was reported?????

Hate to break it to you guys but even if baiting is banned it's still going to happen. Baiting has been banned for years since CWD and yet when season starts every single gas station has piles of bait. We own several properties and ALL of our neighbors still bait. The millions of bait piles thrown along fences & property lines will stop a lot of it!!! Drones make it super easy as well. Lot of folks who don’t want to bait but only do it because “I have to to keep deer around” will stop too. It’s illegal in iowa but a few still do it. Pretty rare though & folks that do usually get busted.

The problem with corn piles everybody is shooting younger. Nice bucks and it is hurting the older class deer because they can never make it that far being able to Walk to any corn pile at a younger age ..3 to 5 years won't be no big bucks around like used to be Just stop in season baiting
@toddstewart943711 сағат бұрын
And yet the age structure in Ohio trends towards having older bucks. How can this be? Maybe, and I'm not a biologist here, but maybe its because Ohio has always been a one antlered deer state. If the state wanted to protect the bucks they should start by requiring a person to be 12 years of age to hunt deer.

Debating corn piles…. The main response is to bring up food plots?!?! Really?? Ok- go plant a food plot if it’s the same thing. Exact same thing with crossbows used during archery season by able bodied folks … DEFLECT!!! “Well a compound is more advanced than a stick bow”. How about u specifically argue the merits or downsides of bait. Don’t deflect!! 👍
@garretts16046 сағат бұрын
Great call Skip. Those posting they're the same are doing so solely to support their need for corn piles as a necessary tactic. You cant convince them they're killing small game and bird populations promoting nest predators, versus a food plot which provides these species. Bait is an immediately consumable attractant that is transported and applied for ones benefit ...trees, plots, ag, native browse. The same guys are that deflect this claim compounds shoot as well as crossbows and rock ignorance on anything but their self posturing position. Ohio has become "the other guys ruined it" hunting state. They whine about NR hunters, who are 20% of the take and 70% of the revenue. Ironically, limiting baiting would cut the number of NRs and outfitters down due to the effort needed.

I hunt IA & KS…. IA: illegal. KS: corn piles everywhere.. We need to think past: ME ME ME .. what’s best for RESOURCE/DEER & future of hunting? There’s NO MERITS to baiting except “I want to kill deer easier”. Past that- none. NEGATIVES: bacteria diseases. Aflatoxins that kill wildlife like turkeys. Promotes massive Racoon populations. Bait pulled after season when deer in critical need. Massive congregation of deer leading to: predation, destruction of natural browse, starvation when food is pulled, etc etc. Not to mention the lack of challenge & woodsmanship it teaches new hunters. I’ll argue hunter retention will go down over the long run. Plots don’t need to be part of debate BUT:. Are used for easier kill BUT..Often utilized almost all year done right (clovers for example). Diverse & nutritious & is gone or grows back when consumed. Benefits to birds. If u measure the size of an acre, a 1 acre plot vs a 10 sq ft corn pile is 4200x larger. Improve soil health. Requires effort/work. If I got into the habitat improvements folks do between IA & KS… it’s not even close. KS has turned into a bait pile Mecca in 25 years. 25 years ago I rarely saw it. Now it’s littered on most fence lines I see. Creates huge conflicts. Turkey pop is devastated in KS. We don’t have bait in Iowa & most hunters don’t even do plots - it’s woodsmanship, hunting skills or crop fields. Experience is amazing. Hunter retainment is high. We don’t have the VAST negatives that come with corn piles. Just ask this simple question: what’s the benefits of bait? What’s the negatives? Is this only about YOU or should this discussion be about the resource, future & other hunters? HUNTING in general has trended in the wrong direction (easy button being huge component) & until we change our mindset past our own selfish goals - trend will be same way. Time for a change. Well done guys. Great job & thanks for ACTION over just talk!!! It’s clear u aren’t in this for yourselves but rather- the resource, other hunters & future. You are doing the right thing!!! Huge props!!!! 👍💪🔥🥳

Without baiting, the 5 acre hunting property has sparse opportunity for deer hunting compared to 40, 400, 4000 acre hunting property loaded with food plots. Again I say, put up the high fence and protect your investment and leave your neighbors alone.

@Iowa_Whitetail9 сағат бұрын
I agree it does. That’s why any hunter should have several places to go. I hunted “5 acre tracts”. I got more permission & got plenty of public spots. There’s the problem- everyone has to take a buck off 5 acres. That’s called “over harvest” or “raping the resource” & will degrade the deer & opportunities for others. It’s not sustainable for everyone to shoot a buck off 5 acres!!!! Or several!!
