I hardly ever do a steady retrieve like I've seen most videos tell you to do. In certain conditions, it's the way to go, but in most cases, the pop and pause method kills it. I love how you can fish this lure super slow while still making a decent amount of noise. I am having some major issues, though, with line twists. At first, the lures work fantastic, but after a few hookups, they don't work as well, and I'm getting serious twisting that's making the lures unusable. I'm thinking about trying a ring with a barrel swivel. Just curious how you've made out.
@RivermanTV-19 сағат бұрын
Yeah, I get so many more bites on pauses. I know some guys say that a swivel helps with the line twist but I honestly don't notice it when I throw braid. I can see it happening from time to time but it doesn't affect anything enough bother me.

What's funny is yesterday I went fishing on Lake Nottely and literally every spotted bass I caught was on an extremely fast retrieve. I figured it out when I was just reeling my bait in fast so I could get another cast off and wham-o. Maybe I need to switch to braid. Love the bait, but man, the line twists are a pain in the butt.

I don't know about the Sportage as yet, but I've owned two of the Prius (2016 in the last one), and I found that if you are in a part of town that has a lot of hills, that the sport mode in that one gets better mpg. Less work for the transmission etc so though you are not speeding, you are rolling easier in the hills. Also what you discribe in the breaking is the same in the Prius. Light breaking as much as possible keeps them charged, also it is slowed down by the recovery generator vs the actual breaks. This does tend to irritate other drivers that don'e understand why you are "Riding your breaks" lol. Another thing I found was that if I'm going to be running at a single speed for a while I will always use my cruise control as much as possible. This also saves you fuel because you are not fluctuating the gas pedal all the time. This way when I'm in town on a main road at 40 mph, my mpg is awesome. Also on the freeway, I'll jump into the Truck lane, and do the same speed they are. Five mph actually has a great impact on mpg. Even maintaining 65 is much better than 70mph.

June here in east Tennessee and the rivers are 70-74* with some of the rivers already at low levels usually not seen until Sept. The smallmouth are still here in the same sections as last year and still killing the dark sleeper and any 3" goldish brown paddletails or underspins in the same colors that look like the little suckers or Darters. They are not hitting any topwater lures though, no whopper ploppers, no spooks, no jerk baits so that is odd. I've been checking out other rivers and streams but none produce 15-20 fish in a quarter mile float like my honey hole. Some locations near Newport that are easy to fish from the banks near large farms using migrant labor have been picked clean. I floated 12 miles of what is labeled a trophy smallmouth river over a 2 day period and caught 4-5 small bass. I'm learning to just skip areas where it looks like people have been fishing from the banks...the hunt continues

Great video. Just found your channel and really enjoy it. Have you ever made a video about the tackle you choose fishing a smaller river from kayak? Curious if you tend to stick to shorter rods? Specialized or all purpose rods? Fishing line types? Thanks again for having a great channel.
@RivermanTV-24 күн бұрын
I haven't made any videos specifically about my rod choices for river trips. I usually try to use rods that are 7' or under and suitable for at least two techniques. For example, I might throw both a jerkbait and wacky rig on a 6'10" Medium Fast rod while I save another spinning setup of similar length but slightly heavier action for a plastic swimbait and/or Midwest finesse rig. My casting setups are usually heavier overall and are reserved for topwater, crankbaits, swim jigs, jigs, etc.

Does a tube factor into your bait selection at all for summer river smallmouth?
@RivermanTV-Ай бұрын
I don't throw a tube as much as I should, but a lot of times I'm trying to avoid dragging the bottom. Instead I want to cover water quickly and generate more bites. Any river that has crayfish will have smallies that will absolutely kill a tube. It will work almost anywhere in the country at basically any time of year.
@golfguy8403Ай бұрын
@@RivermanTV- thanks for the reply. I’ve never fished a tube before, but I’m going to be fishing an up-river section of the St. Croix by kayak and am trying to formulate a game plan. This video was a fantastic place to start.
@RivermanTV-Ай бұрын
@@golfguy8403 all the baits in this video will do well out there. I'd add that a lightly weighted wacky rig also works well in place of a jerkbait and is a little more subtle.

Wow! Just found this channel, and all I can say is THANK YOU! Santa brought my 9 yr. old son a canoe for Christmas, and all he wants to do now is hit the river looking for smallmouth. He has been frustrated the last few times we've gone because I have caught them, but he has not. I was having the hardest time articulating the sorts of things he needed to be looking to find. We sat down tonight and watched two videos, and he is already chomping at the bit to get out and try all of the stuff he learned. Your illustrations and slow motion made it so easy for him to understand (and dad might have been sitting there taking just as many notes). Subscribed to the channel and now about to go back and check out more!

Man, I fish smallies as well, so I was excited to see you fishing my state waters, but I gotta say I don't like the way you treat pike and muskie. You're scared of them and shouldn't be fishing in places where you know you're going to catch them if you can't handle the fish properly. Otherwise, nice vid.
