@@DecrepitGaming I started late in 40k 5th edition and metal minis were being phased out. Finecast was just meh. I’m frustrated I need to rebuy several blood angels minis that are now plastic lol. But yes the feel of metal minis was just so nice. I agree the plastics can look better and are easier to put together but even tho I didn’t grow up with the metal ones, I have an unusual fondness for them.

Use the strong tone, just remember to wait until it’s fully dry then heavy dry brush of white. Then start your colour scheme. Have fun achieving results:)

I'll just use speedpaint as well, but I'm curious to try putting Holy White on the bones instead of Pallid Bone. Unless that ends up looking too white...

I can point you to the wyvern that I have already painted. They will all be done in the same manner. The nice thing about the gw wyvern is the fact you can paint the rider separately. I may paint an official model in the future if I bother to acquire one. Do not be intimidated by the model you have though

Indeed there are reasons to use the nuln oil if only to aid in visually seeing what your painting. You are also correct that with a little bit of forward planing there are areas of some models that you could avoid altogether with the wash. However I am all about getting stuff done on this channel so I rush through things. I do encourage folks with more time to amend my work as they see fit. There is no right or wrong way of painting if the final result makes you happy.

It's an old metal miniature I have had for many (too many) years. I still have a heck of a lot of old 3rd/4th edition models as well as newer metals. Most of it is in storage, I shall slowly work my way through it. This guy was a must though, the greenskins need the backup :)

I would say about three hours of actual painting time. Spread over a couple of days. I’m lucky to be able to leave stuff without concern of it being moved or handled.

Some folks are traditionalists, which is fine by the way. I have spent my wargaming hobby life looking for painting shortcuts as I can’t stand playing with unpainted armies. Indeed they have, I can't agree with anyone that claims inflation or luxury hobby. At the end of the day they are reselling old miniatures that have paid for themselves already. The new stuff being a bit more expensive than the old stuff I could understand. I would recommend the battalion box to anyone thinking of a Dwarf army. Then I would recommend 3rd party manufacturers for all the bells and whistles miniatures. Anyone who complains that your miniatures are not official is a gimp/simp. Do not be put off the game by the cost, make it work. Heck I remember recently seeing an official article promoting the use of unit fillers (something I would never have dreamt GW would ever have done).

TOW has the most alternative miniature options since the setting is generic fantasy.

The troops in the battalion box look great it’s really the iron breakers that don’t “do it for me “ I am fortunate that I still have a unit of old metal iron breakers in a box somewhere in my shed. Almost time to dig some stuff out. I agree that the battalion box is good value it’s the additional stuff that will break the bank, an example would be your 24 man units which by the way is a great number for a unit. Problem is the £52.50 boxes are 20 strong, so either we are talking proxies or £105 for a unit of iron breakers or hammerers. Starts to get expensive quickly doesn’t it. Not a big deal for some folks but a big deal for others.

I think that when you dig out your old Ironbreakers, and get a good look at then, you’re going to see that they’re not very different from the new plastics. Monopose, smaller overall and still basically just a dwarf in full armour with a bit of beard sticking out. The old metal hammerers were even worse. Absolutely the same model with the exact same pose... repeated. I actually traded my old metals for boxes of the AoS dispossessed dwarfs, and am merrily painting them using more current techniques. The best, in game, waac (🙂) use for the Ironbreaker/Drakes box is to build them as Irondrakes in units of 5, to maximize the number of torpedoes you can take. As far as price goes, remember that the AoS boxes were 10 per, not 20 so you’re only paying £26 per box, comparatively. The bloody things were $55 a box of 10 over here, as AoS models. Last point, you can use thematic unit fillers in larger units or just stick a few odd, appropriately painted, models in. It’s easy to convert Warriors, from the battalion box, to hammerers, for example. The Warriors come with the option of setting them up with great weapons, held in two hands, just like the Hammerers. The only problem is that all the two handed weapons are great axes. But it’s a minute’s work to snip the hammer head off the hand weapons and replace the axe head.

@@earnestwanderer2471 all valid points, and I quite possibly have the rose tinted glasses on when thinking about the old metal models. I will buy some of the new ones before I make any further comment. I also wasn't taking into consideration just how easy it is to convert plastics. a pair of side cutters and some plastic cement, job done.

Great reply earnest. I am glad to hear that the basic troops are easily converted. As you say it’s probably wise to arm everyone you can with a great weapon as your probably hitting last anyway and may as well do as much damage as possible

How do you convert the warriors to longbeards and quarrelers into rangers?

The Warriors box comes with dopey little masks that you’re supposed to glue on to indicate that they’re Longbeards. I don’t bother. I just use heads that have horned helmets and paint the beards white and grey. For the Rangers I just use the quarrelers as normal but paint the clothing in browns and greens, armour black with a light dark bronze drybrush, and since I give them shields, muted colors and dark bronze furniture.

Your pal will struggle Skaven are pretty weak on paper which is a damn shame but they still have a few tricks up their furry sleeves so maybe he will pull off a surprise, ushabti with great bows are excellent although maybe wasted against skaven, screaming skull is also excellent make sure to pay for skulls of the foe. @@DecrepitGaming I know they updated the longbeards to have their own box (I can't remember if they were an alternative to the Hammerers or the Iron Breakers), but you used to be able to upgrade a unit of warriors to longbeards by gluing a mask to cover their faces.

That has always been a problem with gw games, going by what they have released so far I’m hoping there is no or very little creep in power. I don’t mind so much if it is to raise the levels of a crap faction but they need to be careful
