Keep these WONDERFUL animals WILD. AROUND THEIR OWN KIND. In OPEN OCEAN. SO THEY CAN SOCIALIZE WITH THEIR FELLOW ORCAS. US HUMANS ALWAYS HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO SCREW THINGS UP, DON'T WE? OUR PLANET, OUR CLIMATE, ETC.

He died free! I dont care how they try and spin this as a tragedy. He had more space and more freedom in that last year than he ever did in that small tank they imprisoned him in. They should have carried on regularly feeding him (which it seems they did but not as often) but I truly think it was better for him to be out of there.

The kids that contributed to Keiko’s freedom and those which helped rehabilitate Keiko re enter the wild are his pod family. He knew those who would never reject him were his Killer Whale family. And Keiko will immortally be a part of many pod family’s among us in our hearts forever as a testament to all living mamals no matter how different we are.

This is so sad. When they saw it wasn't working they should have made him still free but have a huge real ocean structure and allow the care takers to still be there. They should have realized that the whale was raised in human care. The whale was domesticated. I believe it died from loneliness.

I will never forgive those "Free Kieko" people! They killed him, those bastards!! Kieko, is my cellphone homepage, I saw him in Newport as a child. I love that Orca, I plan on naming my child after him!! I will never forgive, I was heart broken when he died, even now I get emotional thinking about it.

Keiko lived for more than 5 years in his bay sea sanctuary, as well as out in the Atlantic waters, sometimes in the company of wild whales, and finally in a protected cove in Norway. He died of pneumonia.

He died on my birthday. Free Willy was my fav movie as a kid…I’m so sorry Keiko!😢 I hope you’re with your ancestors. One of the few animals on this planet to endure such hardship and not hurt anyone. The important lesson here is to love our animals and not abandon them or use them. RIP Keiko aka: Free Willy

you can't release animals who have spent that long of a time in human captivity. but humans are emotional and stupid so of course we released him again. just because you come from the wild don't mean you belong in the wild. when you are use to such a comfortable 1st world life then you can't be released and you don't want to be released. humans are made to be in nature to and 99,99% of mental illness comes from the fact that we are not in the wild struggling daily for survival. if you grow up comfortable then you ain't gonna miss the uncomfortable even though you are born to be in the wild. it's a huge F you to the animal to just release them. either you kill them or you build them a better habitat but you don't release what has ben spoiled by humans.

Keiko a Male Killer Whale / Orca ( Orcinus orca ) they have a lifespan on ave of 30 yrs. With some wild males living to 60 yrs. Female Wild Orcas can live as long as 90 yrs. Hence Keiko was found deceased on Dec 12 2003 floating in a bay. Hence he was only 24 or 25 yrs old when Keiko passed away from Phenomena. Hence my sadness and frustration about the whole situation of capturing Wild Orcas for captivity. I just hope that Keiko found some happiness out there in the wild. Alibet Keiko was never accepted into any other Wild Killer Whale Pods. Yet perhaps as Male Orcas do they leave their Matericql Pod they were born into. To seek out females unrelated to them to breed with. Perhaps Keiko found a friend for a short time amongst the other Wild Killer Whale Pods. Now at least the capturing of Killer Whales is banned. 💪👃✨

This has always been so upsetting. I was actually blessed enough to see him at the Oregon Coast Aquarium as it was only about an hour away from where I live. Oh, and he uh... well he seemed pretty happy because he ended up freeing his own willy for all the see. Easily 4 ft! Lol Also I was around 12 at this time and asked my mom if it was his.... yeah. She told me that it appears to be. 😢 but I REALLY wanted to make sure... so im the process of my mom getting so embarrass, I just had to ask a worker to get confirmation.. 🙃 and yup! It sure enough was what everyone thought was. I'll never forget that and always cherishhis his memory. Also.... the aquarium they built from the ground up for him... yeah. It was torn down as soon as Keiko left.. I don't think that build was cheap! But ya all gone.

We are lucky Orcas are not “that much” vengeful. (North Spain excepted). These creatures possess the ability to strategize, communicate and are the absolute top dogs of the ocean. The fact they are so kind towards humans is almost incomprehensible. The fact they allow us to share on their side of the World without harming us, shows a level of intelligence rarely seen outside humankind. I think we have enough footage and the ability to record and watch them in the wild. Leave them be.

The whole story is really taken out of perspective… Keiko did seek human company, that is true. He was taught to do so, such habits would not be easily broken. But at the end of the day, he had 5 good years of freedom. He outlived the vast majority of captive male orcas- I believe only one survived longer? -so we cannot say his life was cut short by his release. Given the terrible conditions he had been kept in previously, he would most definitely have died younger if not for rehabilitation. He did interact with wild orcas, despite the language barrier between different pods. Male orcas tend to keep to the periphery of the pod naturally, so his distance from them cannot automatically be taken as a failure to adapt. Keiko did travel and find food well enough. It was sickness that did him in, and after years in a filthy little tank it’s really no surprise he would be vulnerable to pneumonia. In what way can we truly say he was worse off for having been freed? If only he had been rehabilitated sooner, he may have fared better still! Going forwards, we should continue to try and rehabilitate other orcas for release into the wild. Better to find the individual’s birth family, or try to release multiple individuals together to support each other. But we should still try to remedy the wrongs inflicted on these creatures

You dont' release wild animals that have been out of the wild like that. How idiotic. How stupid and how cruel. And the a-hole governments that barred people from interacting with him. The poor thing was lonely and wanted the interaction. Freedom for him sucked worse than captivity.

@@averycheesypotato He was accepted by people and people gave him attention. The other wild orcas ignored him. It was cruel to let him go and insist that people not be allowed to play with him. Freedom is not a great thing for a social animal when it's left alone. This reminds me of when we closed the mental hospitals and mentally ill people died in the streets. The people that pushed for the hospitals to be closed said things liek "at least they died free." It was cruel & only done to make the people freeing them feel better about themselves.
@averycheesypotato

@@CarbonGlassMan but Keiko did interact with & travel with other orcas. Again, male orcas tend to stick to the periphery in pods naturally. Seeking humans because he expects extra kindness & food does not automatically mean he was lacking- just as a person getting a pet dog is not automatically lacking human interaction. We cannot conclude he was badly off. Besides, he certainly did not get to socialize normally in captivity! Going forwards we could look to pair reintroduced orcas up, or better yet find their birth families. Many captive female orcas have also been bred and then separated from their calfs, which is unnatural and extremely traumatic for mother & calf alike. Reuniting animals in this situation would absolutely be a net-positive
@CarbonGlassMan
@CarbonGlassMan 8 күн бұрын
@@averycheesypotato I just don't buy any of that. It was not integrated into a wild family. It didn't stick with a pod, so it was an outsider that didn't speak the same language as the other wild orcas. I get the idea of releasing the animal back to the wild seems like a good thing. I understand the sentiment. I just don't believe it's a good thing to do after the animal has been removed from the wild for 20+ years. I especially think it's cruel for governments to demand that people have no contact with the animal. Another orca that was wild but orphaned & alone went up to people to play & interact with them and the local government began fineing people for playing it it. They ever went so far as to fine people for making eye contact with it. That is evil & cruel. This one wanted to play with people. It wasn't being forced. He wanted to play like a dog wants to play with people. We even had a young bull that wanted to play when he saw us come outside. It's cruel to deny an animal play when it asks for it.
