Well,done! Great video, great photography! It's nearly 50 years since me and my mate, Rex, walked the Pilgrims Way, 8 days, wild camping, surviving in pubs where we were always welcome. A lifetime experience. Thanks for the memories.

Greetings from Melbourne. It's good to see another solo pilgrim. I love the English countryside and get a lot of pleasure from seeing it on KZfaq. I'm planning to walk the pilgrimage route from Bury St Edmunds to Walsingham next May.

Most probably going there this season, which are the best blue runs there for beginners?
@wstravels
@wstravels 10 ай бұрын
Awesome! You will love it. From Idalpe (the main area accessed from Silvrettabahn lift) there are a number of great beginner blue runs. They are often used by the ski school. Those are 8 & 6. Runs 22 & 23 (in Hollkar) are also brilliant but should be done early in the morning as Run 2 (access route) can be challenging late in the day with big moguls. Finally, Run 62 (to Alp Trida in Switzerland!) is awesome. Lovely, long rolling blue and great cafe for lunch. Route 11 must be taken to return to Idalp and can again be challenging in the afternoon (big moguls) so best to return before 2PM. we hope you have an awesome time!! We will be visiting again in January too 😁

Based on a law of averages and reasonable fitness, how far is it possible to cycle in a day? Maybe starting out about 7am until teatime
@wstravels
@wstravels 7 ай бұрын
Aiming for 60 miles / 100km a day (assuming 1000m or less of elevation) is a good goal for a fit person getting in to cycling. It’s very achievable. That’s about 5 hours of cycling. I’d work up to this before doing a multi-day trip though!

@@46FreddieMercury91 that sounds awesome! Chase the Sun run events in the UK on the summer solstice that cover 200 miles between sunrise and sunset. Anything over 150 miles in a day is a true challenge on a bike! How the professionals do that every day for weeks on end is insane!

This is amazingly inspirational and a calling of mine. This weekend just passed me and my brother went with our dad to Winchester as he was taking us to see the barracks there where he did his training for the Royal Green Jackets. As part of our trip we visited and took tours of the Cathedral where they spoke of pilgrimages but I still wasn't aware of those pilgrimages and the Pilgrims Way. It was this weekend, having walked with the children in our local village (Wrotham) did I notice there is a road called Pilgrims Way that tracks off into the distance and here I am learning of it's connecting! All this discovery in a week feels like a calling and I have this extreme urge now to do the walk in its entirety. Amazing video and thank you for inspiring me.

This is such a beautiful video. Would have loved to know more about your inspiration for choosing this route, or how it felt walking such an historic route. But still, even just watching this with the music and the scenery captures something really poetic. So all credit to you - both for the walk, and for putting such a brilliant film together. (P.s I'm a writer/photographer too - and am always looking for people to share about travels or pilgrimages on my newsletter "Photo Meditations". So definitely drop me a line if you and your partner might be interested in a short interview, or sharing any other walks you may have planned.)

Fantastic video. You've given me the inspiration to do this. What chair did you use? It looks really good.
@wstravels
@wstravels Жыл бұрын
You’ll absolutely love it. The North Downs really are beautiful countryside and there are some fun towns to explore along the way. Regarding the chair, it’s blooming brilliant for backpacking. Packs up very small and makes sitting anywhere more comfortable. Only downside is the ground does need to be dry to get best use of it. Unfortunately I can’t find anywhere still selling that exact chair. My grandad bought it in the 90s and then passed it down to me. If you Google “camping chairs with no legs” then there are a few places selling modern day versions. I’d recommend one that can be rolled to fit in a backpack vs. any with cushioning that prevents it from being rolled. Enjoy any upcoming hikes :)

Absolutely brilliant film 👍 Stunning film, especially the drone shots 👍 The Pilgrims' Way is a walk I hope to one day complete. Although I am visiting Canterbury in about two weeks' time, it will be by train (from Tunbridge Wells, Kent). Nicely put together, really brings the story alive. My only suggestion would be the addition of a few captions so we know the location of each church, village, resting spot, etc.

Hi Will, I'd like to know if there is a good guide to make the pilgrimage fro Winchester to Canterbury that you have done already, is it easy to go through just following the sings or a guide is really necessary, thanks and congratulations for the Chanel.

Hi! Thanks for your comment. I took a Cicerone guide book “Walking The Pilgrims Way” by Leigh Hatts. It was nice to have something to read a little extra about the trail, history and surrounding area. I walked along the St Swithuns Way and North Downs Way for this pilgrimage and both of those trails are perfectly waymarked with signs. If you want to follow the exact pilgrims way (slightly different than the waymarked trails) then the book I mentioned can help with that. I hope you have a great walk when you do it :). Best wishes, Will

Lovely video! Did you pick a route specifically for road bikes?
@wstravels
@wstravels Жыл бұрын
We followed the official Sustrans C2C route (and signposting) and it’s primarily road and asphalt cycle path. Their website says “83.8% Asphalt, 14.3% Unsealed firm, 1.8% Unsealed loose”. Some of the 1.8% “loose” was quite bumpy and more suited to a gravel set up. But on the whole we found the official route to be very doable on road bikes!

That’s great to hear! It’s a really lovely hike which I am sure you’ll enjoy. I would say that the majority of Southern England is generally very safe. Whilst on the trail you’ll mainly encounter day hikers and locals in the various towns & villages you pass. Off trail, the majority of overnight spots are small local towns. Everyone I met on and around the trail was very friendly. Let me know if you have any other questions :)

Thanks for the great video, fabulous scenery. I'm thinking of doing the ride in the summer and wild camping along the way, is the route easy enough to navigate? Is there any kind of map app that would guide me or would I need to buy a map and plan the route myself? Thanks again James
@wstravels
@wstravels 2 жыл бұрын
Hi James. Thanks for your compliments and glad that you’re planning on doing the ride yourself. It’s brilliant fun. You’ll see that we travelled very light with just a small backpack along the way. Staying in B&Bs helped to keep the bike light. But, the ride is definitely do-able whilst wild camping. The route is very easy to navigate with blue cycle network signs at every turn in the road. I would however recommend downloading an app called GAIA GPS. I use it for all my rides and hikes. It basically lets you plot a route and then the GPS marker helps you follow along. You’ll find the route I created for the C2C at this link here: www.gaiagps.com/public/LAPtWoxPwJeffRAqKnKiyIOh/?layer=GaiaTopoRasterMeters Using an app is entirely optional though and honestly isn’t a must have but it is a nice safety blanket if you don’t seem to be seeing a blue sign for a while!! Hope this helps and best of luck for your ride! Thanks, Will
