Thanks for sharing all the sights and sounds of such a beautiful place. And a late congratulations on completing such a beautiful journey. There is a podcast out now by a fantastic speaker known as Jester who has taken the trail under her wing,I think you would make a great interview on her podcast since her podcast is all about section hikers. Watched both videos, good job. I've never been impressed by Jansport. I know they have their fanboys, but to me it was all about marketing, and they were marketing themselves more than their packs, none of which were really new, just incorporation of existing and/or obscure features on other packs. As an old hippy, I was really disappointed when they sold out to "the man" at the earliest opportunity, which is what led to their downfall. The dome tent they designed (which was actually a tent based on existing obscure designs with new light weight materials) could have brought them greatness, but the bean counters in the corporation that bought them nixed the idea and told them to focus on packs, especially the "book bags" that were selling like hotcakes to college and high school students. North Face saw the potential and the rest, as they say, is history.

I did this loop 2 days ago. The walk up White Oak was pretty tough but especially those switchbacks after the first big lower falls. The fire road to Hawksbill wasn't bad but my legs were already tired at this point. Was able to press on, albeit not as quick of a pace as earlier. I really wanted to keep going to Hawksbill summit, but I erred on the side of caution for not wanting to risk losing daylight (I started in the early afternoon). That turned out to be a wise decision because halfway down Cedar Run, I got caught in a torrential gully washer. Well, lets just say that going down Cedar Run with soaking wet clothes, sore legs, sore feet, and an empty camelback during and after heavy rain was not fun. Trying to negotiate that trail was a nightmare under the conditions I mentioned. Half a mile to the parking lot, I had no choice but to chug down some water from Cedar Run, no filters or boiling, to get my back and legs to stop cramping. I finally made it to my car at around 6:30PM, completing the circuit in about 5 hours. Uncharacteristic mistakes I made were: 1. Did not check the weather forecast (which up until this hike, I had always done). 2. Not bringing enough water for both the difficulty of the hike and the warm weather. Up until this hike, I always made sure I had more than enough even if it meant more weight to carry. 3. Did not research the trail conditions, especially for Cedar Run. Again, up until this hike, I try to get a feel for what I am getting into first before heading out. This time, I did not make such plans. Going down steep rocky trails is challenging enough, much more so when they are wet and muddy. As crazy as I might sound, I want to go back on the trails again asap and I will once my lower extremities heal. Next time however, I won't get cocky and forget to come prepared. That could have turned out worse had I decided to keep going up Hawksbill. Maybe the only wise choice I made that day. EDIT: Typos

Sadly, in this section, it passes through lots of privately owned land and there was no way to get it off the road. However, it is my understanding that there are some changes in the works that may be working toward changing some of this. I haven't heard may of those who hike this section saying they loved the road walk. Some of it is even quite dangerous. Stay tuned as I don't know when the changes may take place.

Yes it has been a couple of years since Sloth completed these sections. He hated the road walks - as most of the hikers who have that finished these sections. I understand there are some changes being discussed and worked on with powers that be to get some of these sections off the main highways. Lots of this land is private property and makes some rerouting impossible - but we shall see what transpires. Thanks for watching!

Nice history of backpacks. I've probably had a dozen backpacks since I started hiking in 1970. I bought a Jansport D3 at around 1980 and even though I have bought a bunch of new packs since then -- I always return back to using my D3. Its my favorite pack even today. However it looks a bit different then when I bought it. The pads have been worn out and replaced and around 1986 I stripped it down so that the frame is shortened to just above the shoulders so that I could ware a poncho and make it easier to duck under brush and downed trees. I made a new full length bag with 6 removable external pockets. Without the pockets the weight is 3 lbs 10 oz and with the pockets the weight is 4 lbs 6 ozs. I use it for backpacking, mountaineering, skiing and even for day hikes. I found when day hiking with light gear -- a couple of extra lbs of the backpack was not noticable. The comfort in all activities was more important to me then saving a couple of pounds in a lighter weight pack. The homemade packcloth bag is starting to ware out so I am thinking of making a new identical bag out of the newer lighter fabrics but keep on using the same old stripped down Jansport frame.
