Is it possible to do the opposite on a hydraulic disc brake bike? For example having a front wheel with a stock hydraulic brake and a tiagra/105/ultegra/dura ace front derailleur, and a rear wheel with any rear derailleur of groupset with rim brake wheels?

Hi 👋🏻 any experience in switching to a bigger cassette (my actual is 11-36) or smaller chainrings (31/48 as of today) on shimano grx820 12speed dual crankset ? I asked the guys from Wolftooth, and they mentioned not developing any 12 speed Goatlink specific extender (tolerances on those derailleurs being too tight, they do not allow for range expansion)

Hi No, personal experience with 12 speed in a 2x set up. I recently built up a road bike and chose 11 speed rather than 12 speed. There don't seem to be any 12 speed cassettes that go to 42 or 40. The closest is the Sram XPLR 10/44 which I would try if I was willing to take the risk (freehub would need to be changed - to SRAM XDr I think). You could switch to 46/30 chainrings but there won't be much noticeable difference between 31 and 30. In your situation I might try the 10/44 option and use a generic hanger extender but from my disappointing experience with an 11/46 cassette on a previous 11 speed set up I would proceed with caution. Let's hope someone produces an 11/42 or 10/42 12 speed cassette soon!

ACTUALLY, the drivetrain is working great! You can't, by any means, let the chain cross like you did, it's not supposed to work like that. Inner chainring's supposed to work from middle of the cassette upward, and the bigger chainring, from middle of the cassette downwards. Following this RIGHT guide, it's even possible put bigger cassettes.

The cassette in the video : Sram GX XG-1150 10-42 tooth 11 speed. This wheel has a QR (rim brake set up) This cassette requires a Sram XDR freehub. These hubs can be retrofitted to most rear wheels. Otherwise this set up works equally well with a Shimano 11/42 11 speed cassette on a standard Shimano hub. You just lose a little pedalling speed potential on the downhill / flat that's all.

I don’t think disks are dangerous, but I do feel that running 28m tires as I do that they are a solution in search of a problem. I rode decades in the Santa Cruz mountains with rim brakes (albeit almost never in wet conditions) and never felt my braking was lacking in any way. Disks are nice for wider tires though and I like their self adjusting properties. They have their place, but I still prefer calipers on pure road bikes.

@@wizqtyt1476Should be no problem and will make climbing easier. The only things I can think of to mention to are that if changing from Shimano road cranks to GRX, the chainline will move outwards by 2.5mm and you might want to lower the front derailleur whilst also adjusting it for the new chain line. I’ve not had any issues in getting GRX chainsets/cranksets to work on my road bikes when changing from Shimano road. Enjoy 😉 Another option if you are currently on Shimano road 11 speed is to just replace the 34 inner chainring with a Specialites 33 tooth one such as the TA X110 they make….

I bought a 1999 Litespeed Classic that had the original Dura-Ace components meant for racing. I removed all of the components (should have just bought a frame), and went with the GRX FC-600-11 (11-speed) crankset. Used the FD-810-F front derailleur, and got a 105 RD-7000 rear derailleur and a 105 CS-HG700 (11-34) cassette. All components are compatible according to the Shimano website. It might look weird to the road purists out there, but I live in the mountains and I need the lower gears to enjoy riding without dying. I have a higher-geared extra cassette for the flatter roads that I can easily switch out when I need to (think Cycle NC Mountains to Coast ride).

Looking into these Winspace bars for an identical build on an SLC. I keep chopping and changing my mind on them, wondering are they too aggressive? Does the Winspace stem dip downwards, ever so slightly (negative angle)? It nearly looks level in your video? Like you; I'm 188cm tall. Trying to get this SLC frame fit, set up somewhat similar to my Giant Defy, which is very much an endurance bike. I'm 54, very fit and light, (Chris Froome physique) 😂 but getting the right bar and stem combination is driving me crazy. What length is that stem you're using? If getting the Winspace bars I was contemplating the 105mm, again having a fear of being ever so slightly over stretched. I feel this frame geometry sits somewhere between aggressive and endurance, and maybe I should stop overthinking the build. The Winspace one piece bars look way better than a traditional bar / stem combination but I need to consider practicality and comfort too. Thanks for the video. An interesting build. Not sure if you mentioned the final weight of the bike? David 🇮🇪

HI David. Thanks for getting in touch. I am 188cm, 67kg and 86cm inseam. The Winspace bars on my 550 sized SLC 2.0 frame are 40cm wide with 125mm stem. I like long stems so that I can slide the saddle as far forward as possible, which I feel helps with climbing (Pogacar agrees apparently). The bar stem does slope down slightly although the end result is a stem parallel to the ground. I used all of the spacers. Winspace gifted me the bars with purchase of the frame. I've seen they have offered this in subsequent promotions. I think you're right about the frame geometry. It's the most comfortable/smoothest of the 3 bikes I ride, the other 2 being an Emonda SLR and a Bianchi Outré XR4, both rim brake models. My Winspace weighs 7.36 kg with standard, ultralight seat post. It's a great bike and unbeatable value :0)

Hi. It depends on the actual components but assuming you have a long (or medium) cage rear derailleur then I think 11/36 is as big as you’ll need. I find that a 30 front chainring with a 42 tooth cassette on my 2x setup is as much as I need for steep climbs and I ride high cadence (97-105). It’s likely the smallest chaining on a triple will be smaller than 30 in which case 11/36 or 11/34 should be plenty… Of course if your smallest chainring is 30 then you can try 11/42 but I can’t promise it will work. Hanger extender likely to be required… Good luck 😊

Hi Gabriel I don’t have experience with 12 speed road bike gear sets yet but understand the spacing on an 11 speed cassette is different from 12 speed. I think you’ll have to look at 12 speed cassette options. It seems Shimano do a 36 tooth cassette. Your derailleur may work with this without modification/ extension but you will at least need a slightly longer chain. The other option I hope to try in 12 speed is a Sram 10/44 cassette with a 50/34 chainset although I don’t know how easy, if at all, it would be possible to make this work. The other “easy” option is to swop your chainset for a 48/32 or 46/30. Chainsets can be good value.. Hope it works out 💪

The E*thirteen cassette didn’t work with my new bike (46/30 Absolute Black chainrings and 11 speed Sram chain), so back to the Sram 10/42 with sram 11 speed chain. I’m thinking that some cassettes are quite sensitive to the type of chain used. Guess Shimano chains with Shimano cassettes, etc.. Back to your issue though, have you checked the hanger is correctly aligned and also that the hanger extender is also true? I use a Dag-3 Park Tools hanger alignment tool. I check the hanger first then fit the extender without the derailleur and check that too. After that it’s really down to chain length and chain tension, and then accurate trimming of the derailleur 😊 Renewing cassette and chain is always a good idea when needed.

@longerranger Жыл бұрын
Hi Terry. I’m not sure. I haven’t seen any 10/42 or 11/42 12 speed cassettes on the market yet, even from 3rd party manufacturers.. The only alternative I can think of for now would be to try and find a 12 speed cassette that has 42 teeth (or similar) on the second largest sprocket and run it as an 11 speed by preventing selection of the largest sprocket? I’m guessing the best way to do this would be by trimming the rear derailleur so that it « thinks » the smallest sprocket is the second smallest. In other words, don’t use stop screws to prevent the derailleur shifting up to the biggest sprocket as this may damage the derailleur or force it into crash mode. Cassettes aside, Wolftooth don’t claim that the Roadlink extender is compatible but a generic extender should be fine..
@longerranger
@longerranger Жыл бұрын
Sram 12 speed 10/52 cassettes have a 42 tooth sprocket as the second biggest. They require a Sram xdr freehub so you’d need to fit one of those in place of your Shimano (?) freehub. The plus side of an 11 speed solution like this is the biggest sprocket effectively acts as barrier to overshifting and the chain going into the spokes ;0) BTW, I’ve tried running cassettes bigger than 42 (eg 46) on a 2x road set up, allowing selection of all sprockets, but shifting was very poor every time. 42 appears to be the limit.. :0)

Hi, My son is using GRX 48/31 with a 16-30 cassette for junior road racing due to gear restrictions. I am wondering if the roadlink DM would give further clearance to the 16 tooth sprocket on wheel removal? Currently the bike runs perfect and shifting is great, but removing the wheel is a slight struggle as the cassette clashes slightly with the pulled back derailleur jockey wheel. It looks like the link may push the derailleur back slightly allowing more clearance? - Asked a few bike shops and they say 'shimano needs a 11t started sprocket to work' - however Miche cassettes for junior racing do various options - would save me buying one if you suggest it wouldn't work.

Hi Jon.16-30 is interesting! I wouldn't recommend the road link (or generic hanger extender option) as it's not necessary for the important part which is the optimal operation of the gears. It might help with wheel removal though. You could alway give it a try. You'll need a new, longer chain and a hanger extender. Make sure the rear hanger is true (correctly aligned) while you're at it. Here's a cheapo generic one that should work : www.amazon.co.uk/VOANZO-Mountain-Derailleur-Extension-Extender/dp/B08MQ4KGS6/ref=sr_1_5?crid=14ES9V6DI2C89&keywords=hanger+extender+derailleur&qid=1679472934&sprefix=hanger+extender+derailleur%2Caps%2C371&sr=8-5 I

@@longerranger - Thanks for the reply. The gearing for 11 year olds means they are restricted to a ratio similar to 34/12 which is the same as 48/17, but the later using a much bigger chainring for efficiency. I built it with the GRX 48/31 so on normal road rides we don't change anything and he can climb in almost 1:1 ratio. I think if the wolftooth link is bigger than the standard GRX derailleur link - then this will do the trick for us, just hard to get the info from a suppler.

@@Jon-Lewis Looking at the Wolftooth site it seems the Roadlink DM is compatible with the GRX 810 (RX810) rear derailleur as well as " R9100-generation Dura-Ace, R8000-generation Ultegra, RX800 and RX805 Ultegra, and R7000 105 rear derailleurs". Worth a try I reckon. You could arguably return the Roadlink if it doesn't do the trick after a quick assessment ;0). Obviously you'll need a new longer chain. 1:1 gear ratio is a good standard in my book. That should cover most climbs. Here in the Alps I need a little more with my high cadence pedalling and our very long, steep climbs. My hill climb bike is 46/30 with a 10/42 cassette: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9uTrK-jrcC2Ypc.html My daily ride is 50/33 with 9/42. Incidentally, the 50-9 combination is the equivalent of 61-11, which is great for the downhills! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bNKUfMaam8W6oHk.html

Lloyd did you have to buy grx shifters ? Would 105 5700 shifters work ?
@longerranger

The bike (Trek Emonda ALR 5 2019 - 105,disc) has the original 105 ST-R7020 shifters. No need to change to GRX. Your 105 (r7000?) shifers will be fine 😊 Cable pull is the same for 11 speed Dura Ace, Ultegra, 105 and GRX.

@@longerranger mine is 5700 10 speed, this still OK ? Does dropping to 46/30 from 50/34 give a subtle or obvious difference when it comes to climbing?

@@heavymetal6910 OK. I’ve not tried this set up with 10 speed. There are 10 speed cassettes available in 11/42 (eg shimano Deore CS-M4100-10) so it should be possible. If using a 5700 medium/long cage rear derailleur you’ll almost certainly need a hanger extender (generic « tear shaped » ones generally work and are cheap. Also a new, longer chain (10 or 11 speed). A 46/30 chainset will add at least one extra easy gear although will limit downhill/flat pedalling speed with an 11 tooth sprocket.

Depends where you live I guess.. In Belgium/Norfolk I wouldn’t need more than a 28 tooth cassette. Here in the Alps there are no flat roads. Most climbs are 1000m vertical. One of my “favourites” is 1000m at an average of 10% (Colle San Carlo). You can’t ride that in the saddle at a cadence above 90 rpm without a 42 tooth cassette, unless you’re Pogacar :0). BTW, I’m in the top 10 on Strava for all local climbs for my age group, although a mate using a 30 tooth cassette is way faster - he is at the very top in senior World Championship competition though!

I agree - to some extent. It was an experiment to partly see what was possible. On my main bike (Winspace SLC 2.0 disc) I run 50/33 up front with a 9/42 cassette and Di2. However, for the steeper hill climbs round here (I live in the Alps), I use my older Trek SLR rim brake bike with 46/30 and 10/42, again with Di2. I need the extra gearing when the gradient is 10% or more as I prefer a high cadence 😅

Dont need a 46t for such a small of a tire, and you have a 2x system. 9-42 would easily be the best combo.

0:23..is the chainlink tensioned too high? my bike lowest gear and derailleur look exactly like that on the lowest posiible gear. with my big 44t chainring, i worry my chain will snap or damaged my derailleur.

Yes, in that my chain was one link shorter than necessary in the video. I have since added another link (new chain) and the rear cage doesn't strain at all now. Best to go as long as possible with the chain but without getting any/significant chain slack when in "small-small". B-screw adjustment will no doubt be necessary.. My Di2 helps as in the small chainring I'm prevented from selecting the 2 smallest rear sprockets. The longer the cage of the rear derailleur, the better, generally.

@@longerranger i see.. im new with bike. recently i bought 118 link but it still too short. what a waste. Im thinking about replacing it but the price of longer chain here almost double the cost of my current chain! i think you're right. Im taking cautious action like not to shift to lowest gear so that i can still use the chain to get some miles from it.

HI Lloyd, I have cyclocross 50/34 with 11-28 cassette and planning to swap the rear derailleur to longe cage and trow 11-42 cassette, just to read comments and watch your vid I think is possible right?

Hi Carlos I have done a number of conversions for friends out here with 50/34 chainsets. The easiest option has been to use 11/34, 11/36 or 11/40 cassettes in combination with a long (or medium = "GS" if Shimano) cage rear derailleur. Depending on the rear derailleur a hanger extender is sometimes required too. Generic tear shaped ones are fine. You'll need a longer chain obviously. 11/42 is pushing things quite a long way and it doesn't always work out well, but if you have the same components as in this video or as some of my other videos than you will should get the same results. I have videos to show both Di2 and mechanical set ups. Hope it works out for you 🙂
