How did you get the brush to make the picture see through like that at 15:24?

This is awesome; I am using Photopea and when I try to warp the text with those numbers, it's doing something different. The top line is getting distorted as well. Did this happen to anyone else?

I've been using some techniques but was wondering what would be the best for this kind of designs where there are some soft edges (lower opacity) on the borders after masking out the edges of final design? When I add distressed texture to the text and select the color burn in the blending modes, the text becomes blacker than it should be. What could be the problem?
