You did a very accurate job of describing this. Like you were there. Thumbs up.

The original punk was Rockabilly. Raucous, up tempo, simple musically and made by 'non musicians', anti establishment. small independent labels etc. Punk was essentially amplified rockabilly. You'll note that the 1970s Rockabilly revival was on the same time line as the emergence of punk.

Depending on how you define new wave, I'd answer the question of my favorite artist differently. I will mention a not so oft mentioned band though: Split Enz

My introduction to New Wave was when my older brother played Turning Japanese by the Vapors for me on his Walkman.

Where does a band like R.E.M. fit in this? I figured they'd also be New Wave much like their fellow Atlantans (?) the B-52's.

Music history is very subjective. And I guess you did a really good job because how diverse and vast the whole music scene is. As a music historian myself I will say that all that glitters isn't gold all that is mainstream is not necessarily the truth as far as chronology of events are concerned. Music for the Masses had an exceptionally long tour, so it took a minute to get to Violator however the album right after violator the Songs of faith and devotion is just as pivotal. 👍

Punk was F you. Post Punk was I’m F’ed. New Wave was the record, film and clothing companies “ Hey, let’s water this down and sell it to American teens.” That was some good music though.

Really enjoyed this m8. I grew up in the 80’s UK and honestly you’ve no idea how much of an institution Top of the pops was. Every kid watched it glued to the count down, hoping their favourite song would get played while disapproving parents tutted or laughed in the background!!! Glad you mentioned Depeche Mode but more attention imo should have been on the influence of founding member Vince Clarke. IMO His influence on 80’s music cannot be overstated. Anyway bravo and I’m looking forward to see what you do next.

What? No When In Rome's "The Promise" as the most iconic end-of-80's New Wave? Also, I'm a bit surprised Geldof's Boomtown Rats didn't get an honorable mention. Otherwise a great video that condenses so much into so little time.

I wish you had mentioned why DM had a different sound with Martin Gore as Vince Clarke left and formed Yazz/Yazoo with Alison Moyet and her black, gospel sounding voice singing the lyrics. After 2 successful albums Vince creates Erasure with Andy Bell. I was blessed to see them open up for Duran Duran in 1985 and Andy wore a red cup over his crotch 😱 I wish Terri Nunn and Berlin were mentioned bit maybe do a new video: New Wave Music In Movies Please highlight these special 💎for me: Valley Girl - the whole soundtrack yet highlight these two for me "Cool Places" - Sparks & Jane Wiedlin - yes she’s a Go Go "I Melt with You" - Modern English Almost any John Hughes film as he led this use of soundtrack songs to get ticket sales and record sales: Sixteen Candles and focus in on the "If You Were Here" - Thompson Twins Modern Girls (movie soundtrack) “But Not Tonight" - Depeche Mode with Dave originally singing this song they didn’t want to make or perform Written by Martin Gore who performs it beautifully now as an acoustic song with piano only in concert. My Berlin / Terri Nunn is another topic, another day…. ~ Marin County Vinyls guy going into SF to Tower Records and many small little shops for 12” remix imports and later CDs 💿

I think most people would consider Detroit's 'Death' (not to be confused with the much later Metal band of the same name) to be worthy of at least an honorary mention... And I only say 'honorary' because even though they were active in and around '73, the fact that their label refused to promote them on account of their intransigence on the subject of their name ( _very_ Punk Rock, that!) meant that they never really got sufficient exposure to influence _anything!_ In fact it would be something like 40 years before they would get the recognition they were due, by which time something of a bandwagon would form around them... Not so surprising, when one hears tracks like 'Politicians in my Eyes', which, had there been any justice, would have achieved Instant Classic status the second it was recorded!

I so love how people remember the 80s, and leave out factors like the AIDS epidemic, the crack epidemic, the farm crisis, Iran-Contra, the 1987 stock market crash, the closing of mental illness treatment facilities that precipitated a major increase in homelessness, and so much more. Major eras of creativity often arise because of major social upheavals, and this was true of the 80s - which is partly why 80s styles were revivals of 60s styles. I turned 30 in 1985. I wore the shoulder pads and the big hair. I went dancing at Danceteria and partied at MK. But all that took place against a backdrop of a whole lot of bad. People were dying and the government did fuck-all about it, until it hit white suburbia and Hollywood stars. Oh wait…

It’s a beautiful life by Devo (didn’t care for Whip it). Adam and the Ants-Stand and Deliver/Prince Charming..ha, ha,, but later I got into ambient/electronic which was a little different.. college radio there . Punk is variable sometimes fused with electronic. Think also, Stereo lab..Latetitia Sadier was innovative, no doubt, way beyond other women. Would be great if you can do a piece on her..She passed of cancer in her 50’s or so.. Your talking a lot about some commercial artists. There’s so much more..but you got it with Brian Eno..Do something on Sadler..a genius who must be acknowledged. Thanks for the trajectory..loved Boy George too, and others you mention (some). Oh my, I just mentioned ABC to another as cheese, but good cheese..”once there was a time..” Actually electronic music was innovated at the end of the 1880’s. Look up the history of electronic music..this was long so I watched 3/4 of it. Thank you go night..Incidentally another artist did Mad World, and was amazing..Bjork was good too.

The first wave was wonderful! The new wave was a crescendo of British pop culture that I fear will be forever lost to the sameness of multiculturalism. It has been forty years since a wave has crashed on our shores and the surf remains calm.
