It's impressive how D&D lives rent free in the mind of Pathfinder simps. "Pf2e spellcasting is better" Better than what? Maybe the system they obsess against. There are many other systems with magical systems way better than both. Pathfinder specially is rules-heavy, boring, mechanical and terrible for a roleplaying experience. It's liked by overpower players only. Not good for a creative dm'ed and played table. 90%+ use those modules, which are horrendous adventures. They can't think outside the box. They are so inside the box that they are in a second box inside the first one.

My bard never managed to get the damage potential to be a true tank but his versatility meant he could take on that role when needed for short periods of time. After reaching level 15 he actually switched to away from the College of Swords to college of Glamour to boost his support capabilities and become more of a commander able to reposition (and buff) his allies with Mantle of Inspiration. While not as able to personally fill any gaps in the line his spells (especially Draconic Spirit and Wall of Force) enable him to do so. At lvl 16 I picked up a level in Divine Soul Sorcerer both to get access to Shield and Absorb Elements as well as for the nifty 2d4 get out of jail free card for that critical saving throw. 17th level I added a lvl of Peace Cleric both for the 9th lvl spell slot and the Emboldening Bond, and the last three levels I decided to get some Rune Knight levels both to boost his martial prowess as well as getting Action Surge, with a few interesting shenanigans through runecasting and giant might as bonus. (Echo knight would have been an interesting alternative but given how quickly my bard moves across the battlefield keeping the echo up would've been quite tricky) Just giving Odd something to think about. After 15 lvls of Bard there's are a lot of interesting level dips open. www.dndbeyond.com/characters/87053684

One of my favorite characters I ever played was a Dragonborn Monk Fighter Multiclass. He was a way of the open hand monk with 4 levels in Battle master fighter, meaning he could utilize martial abilities so well that he could control the battlefield. To give context, at level 9 he could use a maneuver for Riposte (use a reaction to attack if the opponent missed), and in that same attack use a ki point for stunning strike, so if they failed, they’d be stunned for a round, then if it was my turn, I could use another battle maneuver to disarm him, on top of my 2 attacks and a bonus action for unarmed strike as a monk, and if I really wanted to, use action surge to use 2 attacks again and another Ki point from the open hand technique to knock him prone (all of which at this point would be at advantage with him being stunned). So in terms of action economy, I stunned, disarmed, knocked him down, and attacked an opponent 6 times in a single round, all at level 9. This is a fairly unique scenario but it goes to show how much you can do with the right build.

While I'm mostly excited for weapon masteries, I have gripes with two of them. 1. Graze - what happens when you apply a poison (like purple worm poison) to say a greatsword? Does a simple scratch apply the poison? If yes, then you can apply the poison on every attack, regardless if you hit or miss. 2. Nick - If you use 2 weapons with the nick property, you get no mechanical advantage. Characters that dual wield scimitars or daggers are weaker than someone using a shortsword and dagger for instance. They've already confirmed that using the nick property doesn't mean you can also use your bonus action for another offhand attack. I think using 2 nick weapons should bypass that restriction.
@ConstructedChaos
@ConstructedChaos 6 күн бұрын
Ohh these are interesting observations! I feel like the poison would only activate on a hit, sadly (just a guess here). And the you only need one nick weapon to get the benefit of freeing up your bonus action so it's basically a free extra chance to hit for sneak attack, smite, or something like it. I think it's worth it!

In one of the interviews Todd Kendric asked if you could throw three daggers and JC said yes with no pushback. Sometimes they do mis remember their own rules though. The mastery I have an issue with it, and it is entirely pacing issue, is topple. A saving throw every attack is going to get tedious. Using some like their Con score instead of rolling might help but that means some monsters are always going down and some are always standing but maybe that's OK.
@ConstructedChaos

Fighter is broken. In a bad way. It's one of the weakest classes both in combat and non-combat situations. Paladin deals far more damage, can tank more damage, have same defense, is a perfect support because of auras and can cast spells. Wizard bladesinger is just literal monster. Only good uses fighter could have is multiclass. You couldn't make good fighter without multiclass or taking some features. And even then that multiclass would be probably 3 fighter/17 wizard. But still let me remind you the fact that you should focus on your character right now, not his "potential". It doesn't matter if your multiclass would be infinitely powerful on 20 level if you would be too weak to survive on 5th level.
@ConstructedChaos

The thing is, fighter is a fantastic martial option in early tiers of play and it multiclasses REALLY well--especially with spellcasters. You don't even need many levels in fighter to see the benefit of it. There's more than one way to look at it, ya know?

Yea, no. I dont think that nerfing the casters is a good idea. Again, trying to balance casters with non casters is a silly proposition to begin with. I am not seeing the specific "balancing" that you are speaking of, unless you mean that there are more steps involved (or they just nerfed the spells into the ground...) Also having to KNOW the spells at higher levels seems WAY over punishing for Bards and Sor who tend to have very limited selections options (number of spells known). I dont know man, I think Pathfinder just made the who casting a lot worst, but then again, I think the same of most of their systems. I like crunch, options and etc, but a lot of there mechanics are baits and switches, particularly with the so called 3 action system which isnt 3 actions....and which adds penalties when you want to perform the same action but someone performing multiple different actions is less complicated and thus no penalty?? Not sure how that makes any sense.

I do have to say that I think I'm enjoying the OneDND approach of empowering martials better. Still, I do think pathfinder's approach makes spellcasting more involved and balanced compared to 5e. And, I also find that pathfinder's system makes me feel a bit more connected to the semantics of casting. Instead of just saying "I cast fireball", it forces me to think about what that actually looks like in their system.

@@ConstructedChaos I think that a lot of that flavor is a table to table/player to player thing. Most players dont want to be bogged down with a lot of non essential stuff. I tax my casters 30 percent of their share of the loot, and in exchange they never have to worry about spell components, half casters get taxed 15 percent. Its simple, makes casting have a material cost, but is simple and able to focus on other aspects. If players want to ham up the components, they can, but its pretty much fluff, and most dont. The One DnD martial improvements are a START of what they need to do but its at least a start. I think they should have gone harder on WM, and Monks not getting them is stupid and I am gonna fix that oversight.

@@shadowmancer99 I don’t disagree with you. But it’s hard to deny that the power casters have in 5e make it difficult to play a strong build without at least dipping spell casting along the way. I didn’t say PF2e has the best solution-only that it’s better than no solution at all.

@@ConstructedChaos Let me be clear, I start with the understanding that casters will be more powerful than martials. They just are. Nothing beats Wish. 1. Yes, I agree that there is a divide and that if you are playing for more than just casual fun, ie optimized even a little, than yes there is strong incentives to get other goodies on straight melees. And not all casters are made the same. I can make an excellent argument that Clerics are martial, and even Hexblades. So ya, if you are going to more optimized game, you do want to look at what other tools and multi class you can add to a martial. 2. Now Pathfinder nerfing the spells, and/or how casting is done however seems to be a non solution. Yes, its something that brings them down, but does it actually make the game more fun...maybe for those who like martials but at the equal or greater dislike of those who like casters. Hence, its not really a solution it just shifts who is upset. 3. So, like you, I think the One DnD is a BETTER approach. RAISE the martials with Weapon Mastery and options on the Barb Brutal Crit and Rogue Sneak Attack features. They didnt go hard enough in those classes, but there was improvement. And by hard enough, I dont mean everyone needs spell or supernatural abilities, but better scale their abilities to keep up with and excel in the jobs they need to do. They really failed the fighter by not tossing the Battle Master, and making that subclasses manauver feature core to ALL fighters for example. Is there a perfect solution, no. Because anyone who wants a perfect solution is going to violate the first thing I said, that casters are, will be, and should be more powerful than the guy swinging a sword. So the next best thing is to raise the sword guys options in appropriate and fun ways without falling into the 4e trap of "powers".

@@shadowmancer99 well said-although I do still believe that a world where martials and casters are on equal footing does exist.

Am I missing something or this is just wrong? I mean this Is not a tank, it's a DPR and it is Just hard tò kill. No taunt, no damage reduction no high hp And second Hex Warrior allow you tò use carisma for Attack only with a weapon that lack two hand feature, non polearm. There Is a eldrich invocation that allow you to do so

It’s not wrong. You can see for yourself how effective this build is at punishing enemies for slipping past to attack the back lines. A tank doesn’t have to be a meat shield. The build does get pretty high hp (albeit pretty late). A spear does not have the two handed property and does work with polearm master and hex warrior.

@@ConstructedChaos my bad for the spear, you're right, but still a tank needs to discourage the enemy to Attack you ally like a armorer artificer or a barbarian ancestral guardian AND encourage to Attack them self. This is a great build but (for me) it is just hard tò kill and deals a lot of damage with a bit of controll. The enemies can easly spawn behind the line and its done

@@killer44339 I think that's a pretty fair assessment. However, you shouldn't forget that the build does also have compelled duel, polearm master, and plenty of ways to support allies IF enemies get by. Perhaps "tank" isn't the best descriptor for it but I can tell you that it has served that purpose plenty well enough in our campaign. Good positioning and strong punishes for enemies that attempt to leave Odd's range do a lot more heavy lifting than you'd think.
