We are planning on rewiring a 158.480 Model 48 Zig Zag Kenmore my wife just got with 16 gauge wire and was wondering whether or not to convert to a three prong with ground or sticking with the factory two wire? Are there pros or cons to doing this considering the age of the motor/machine? Just trying to avoid a fire hazard since there was a slip from a service repair in '97 that noted that the original owner had smelt burning and saw smoke coming from the machine. Figured we'd go ahead and convert the incandescent bulb to an LED considering that the machine shows discoloration following along the wiring from the bulb to the switch for the light with significant discoloration around the light switch. Any suggestions regarding replacing the socket and wiring for the light since the switch feels hot to the touch when switched on? Cars are what I'm used to working on and this will be my first sewing machine rebuild, so I'd appreciate any advice, thanks.
@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079Күн бұрын
@@seandobbs463 Adding a ground will not help to prevent a fire, it could help to prevent being shocked if it is properly wired, should there ever be a short. If you wire it properly then there shouldn’t be a problem with a short. Machines today still do not have grounds on them. Whether 12, 24, 48, or 120 volts the basics are all the same. A hot and a neutral, just turn the power Orr and unplug the machine. 120 volts definitely hurts If you get hit. Thank you so much for making this video! I've been sewing a long time, but I definitely learned some things here! I'm in fact, going to share it on Facebook in a sewing group. I was hoping to see you unscrew the bolt, but I do think I understand that you were talking about the Allen wrench reaching in from the left side and unscrewing it. I'm very mechanical so I'm not terribly concerned, but I'd actually never explored that area. I have a lot of sewing machines because I'm trying to start an upcycling business to support a missionary daughter, and one or two of those machines has been having some skipped stitch issues. So I will visit the obvious things of changing the needle and checking the bobbin tension and the top tension and such... But I especially was interested in the timing. I do know that you can utterly destroy a machine by trying to fix the timing yourself, so I might not be so daring on that, but my teen son is also very mechanical, and he has more confidence and courage and trying the scary things! So I'll probably give it to him to check out after watching this video. You didn't mention if, or how, using cheap thread affects the machine. Do you feel that it really matters if a person uses Gutterman thread versus using unless expensive thread from Amazon?! Do you have a favorite thread type . Also, do you feel that it's much of an issue to use say an embroidery thread at the top but a standard thread in the bobbin ? You seem like such a sweetheart, your wife doesn't really get mad at you for being in your sewing room does she? I sure hope not. But I know the joy is in the challenges of married life! I don't mind if my husband's and my son room, so long as he's not complaining about my mess! But your wife seems to be very very orderly with her sewing room! In fact, I'd love to see a tour of it. Do you think she'd be up for letting us see how she organizes things? Have a great day. God bless you!

@@DarthPotatoes The machine as a whole, especially the cam follower and associated linkages need to be cleaned and have gunk and varnish removed then be lubricated again. Mineral spirits works well removing sticky gunk. Denatured alcohol works well on dried hard varnish.

I am the original of a Bernina 930. I have a couple of problems. If I don't hold the thread when I start to stitch, it will always create a thread nest on the bottom of the fabric. The other problem is the thread will drop off of the thread take up lever and then does not sew any further because the thread has created a nest on the bottom of the fabric. The machine was serviced at the beginning of this year. The service tech suggested I was not using the correct thread, so I changed to a Superior brand 50 weight. But the problem persisted. Do you think there is an easy solution? I know it may be hard to diagnose if you don't see the problem happening, but maybe there is an easy solution.

When i put in use the threadwinder with a spool on it something inside is loosened. So the needlebar is not working and the turningwheel goes very smooth.... It still is a riddle i had it as a find in a thriftstore and took it to the maintenance man. (one of the few still around that has knowledge of most brands and immediately he found a problem. But he is a good technician but quite stubborn and says it is good. Strange because my other machine looks a bit like Singer (a Melson form the sixties) the turningwheel moves very easy...
