Frieren and Dungeon Meshi made me realise that there is more potential to anime's fantasy genre that was clouded by all those isekai's.

The isekai thing in the title seems like a clickbait. It's just about friren and I don't feel like the mention of isekai is even needed.

Isekai is a formula designed to cut effort by making a protagonist from the real world so you don't need to think up a backstory or realistic personality based on medieval life experiences. It's the fast food of fantasy.

For me, though it's my favorite genre, the biggest problem with isekai is that it tends to follow the same path as shounen.

I never liked ET, my mom did, but she didn't like Star Wars. And The Thing was awesome from the first time I saw it. I found ET to be a candy coated, cavity inducing, sweet fest. It was almost vomit making in its sweetness. Not my cup of tea.

Mushoku Tensei is superior in writing.

For a show that skips long passages of time so often, they really hung onto the trials for way too long

Frieren's not an Isekai you idiot, it's a Fantasy Anime. A BAD Fantasy anime with poor development, so a guy going "well it looks like the Isekai genre so I'll make comparisons because I'm as surface level on things as possible and this is what the Frieren audience is. DAH!" makes sense.

the isekai concepts i like are the ones where the protagonist is already a professional in our own world and is merely applying their profession onto the new world.

The next seasons will give it the place that this anime really deserves. in the meantime, it's all about the hype circus

I would never have compared Frieren to the Isekai genre, but after watching this I realize they are quite comparable. The reason why they are so comparable is because there is only a fine line between moving to another world altogether and moving through time into a world that is foreign to those it left behind. Of course, that leads me to think "you don't need a second life or a second world to have a second chance," you just need a really long first life. Frieren gets her second chance because, to our perspective, she gets many lifetimes to work with. Heiter's second chance takes the form of the next generation. It is a MUCH more nuanced and realistic form of getting second chances, one that allows for a special kind of evolution to the story of each character as they fade into a legacy rather than the usual Isekai godhood. But that's exactly why Frieren is so comparable with Isekai protagonists, she's the one character who doesn't need to be remembered because she'll just outlive everyone who would remember her. She's the only one who gets a second chance without passing her regrets on to a new life in the next generation.

This show made High Fantasy click for me. Never before have I experienced the beautyu of it in such awesome amount. This should be immortalized as one of the best works of this century IMO

But just being able to do better, is the SNOWFLAKE syndrome... If I just did better I could be Elon Musk, that is simply not true, nothing except being born Elon Musk allows me to be him. Life is 99% accidents, and 99% that your parents was born to rich parents, that was born to slave holders, that was... Accident of birth, accident of life... The real question is why the hell do I need to be Elon Musk, in order to be Elon i have to make people suffer to syphon their wealth. Sharing wealth might be boring, but it is how you make a better world. Isekai gives you power and though that power you get control, you don't have power in the real world and you don't have control, no matter if you are born as Elon Musk or not, that is why isekai is a fantasy, pipe dream and seldom a nice one as it isn't about benefiting everyone, just yourself and your own selfish desires. Being the "chosen one" doesn't make a better world, working together with all the other weaklings to create power, that makes the world a better place, just sad that most turn around and use the power to exploit others, because it's always considered better to deny someone else wealth, than sharing.

Why do you keep showing clips of SAO? It's neither fantasy...nor Isekai. WTF? Well, that's not completely true. It absolutely IS fantasy...because none of the technological aspects in it are at all possible...ever. But that's a different problem altogether. But, it's also definitely not isekai.

12:03 what we learn about many of these spells, is that sometimes Frieren picks up these spells or associates them with her former party members. The grape spell, for example, are associated with Eisen, the warrior dwarf who had a fondness for sour grapes. That spell *means* something to Frieren, because the spell meant something to someone important to her.

I'm going to have to take a second look at this one. I saw it come up in the new stuff a few months ago and my first thought was another boring fantasy anime. Most of the anime I see is just a remake of something I have already seen. I think I could count on one hand the number of anime that tried to be original (that wasn't cheese), and most of those had 1 or 2 seasons I disappeared.

I just don't get why people think Frieren is THAT good. Certainly not better than FMA. I feel like most of the characters are super forgettable and don't add much flavor to the world. Besides Fern, Frieren and maybe Denken, I genuinely don't find any of the characters even remotely interesting.
