thanks. i thought it was a very smart and well-executed film, though it didn't resonate for me and stick with me the way it seems to have for you. i wonder if you have ever covered anatomy of a murder, my favorite courtroom film.

Wow! Just finished listening to this discussion and wanted to thank you for taking the time to talk about so many fine details of this Criterion release. The Criterion DVD edition was one of my first purchases during my initial physical media collecting phase and has proven to be one of the most important items that I own in terms of how it helped shape my personal life and tastes in many ways. One day I hope to return to this discussion to speak in more detail, perhaps after I pick up this new release myself and witness it in all its HD glory even though I have watched the DVD I mention probably close to 50+ times in my life. Criterion should send you a plaque for how many of their releases you have sold to people with your words and excitement that you so kindly share. Yes, I had to let you know that this discussion has made my day as it allowed me the opportunity to think on this film and all the mind-blowing details within the film and surrounding it's creation as well as mentioning the novel/major players that are a part of this work. The way you hint at all the things present within this film that can be uncovered by multiple viewings brought all these things to mind and that's what it's all about for me when it comes to film/art exploration. Thank you my friend! Cheers! "Too weird to live, and too rare to die." One of many of my favorite quotes that come to mind from the classic American work by Hunter S. Thompson.

thanks, great overview and analysis. its troubling to me that criterion places a spoiler in the menu. terrible thing to do. i once took my son to a theater to see the exorcist for the first time for him, and before the film, they had this awful introduction that showed how they created the special effects in it, virtually ruining the experience of the film for my son.

Hi Daisuke, thank you so much for making this video as I totally missed this release 🙆‍♂️🤦‍♂️and how can I as it’s the works of one of México’s greatest directors of all time, Emilio (el Indio) Fernandez! Indeed, el Indio Fernandez has probably the most success from Mexico’s golden era of film making [1936 - 1956]. I’m also glad you mentioned Gabriel Figueroa as he is also credited as the best cinematographer from that era. I hope the Criterion Collection releases more from them.

A sensational telenovela noir with lots of babalu music and voodoo dancing. It's my favorite Mexican mother's day movie. A terrific Criterion release.

I know it's not the video... However... Anybody else noticing performance issues with Blue Velvet 4k? Mine won't play past the frank booth car ride. Skips, jerks, stops, then jumps to the end of the film.

Ps this is a trailer for a black and white Giallo short film I made. I know it’s not remotely the same thing. But Clouzot had a small influence on the Italian Giallo genre. Hope it’s ok to share with you take care thank you for another great video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h82jYNOXmKfLpXk.htmlsi=Av0UgOFR1HCmV2de

I think the other reason I like his movies. Is because I relate to his point of view on humanity and temperament. In my research Clouzot was viewed by many of his collaborators as a pessimist, short-tempered, and almost always angry.Brigitte Bardot described Clouzot as "a negative being, forever at odds with himself and the world around him".His outlook on life is reflected in his own films that focus on the darker side of humanity. This describes me to a T I’m guessing he knew a lot of backstabbers. Im also kind of moved. To me some one who hates humanity that much must also love it or I guess I’m projecting. I first saw this movie with my dad as an 11-year-old. I remember us being struck by the shadows. I forgot about it until recently.

I’ve never been a fan of French cinema sure there’s a few movies I like. Generally speaking I don’t find French culture interesting at all. I love Italian culture. That said I love Le Corbeau and Henri-Gorge Cluzot is my favorite French director. Some people say that his overrated yet still good Les Diaboliques from 1955. Is the film to out Hitchcock Hitchcock. I’d say no Le Corbueau is the film that out did Hitchcock. It’s the only film of that era that is as good as Fritz Langs M from 1931. I think Henri-Gorge Cluzot should be mentioned in the same breath as Akira Kurosawa ( My favorite director) of course their filmography is nothing alike. But their movies just don’t age for me. they really use the medium of film. To its full potential. John Luc Godard. disregarded him. To that I say Henri-Georges Clouzot left a bigger mark on cinema that Godard and he was a real filmmaker. We’re outside of Breathless Godard’s filmography is nonsense. One last thing I understand this movie cause controversy because it was produced by a German studio controlled by the Nazis. I understand why French people are upset by this, but I feel the morals story and it doesn’t comply with any rhetoric the Nazis have I don’t think.

Thank you for your wonderful extensive thoughts on these works by Ozu. The Criterion DVD was the first Ozu film I ever saw. I had been a Kurosawa and Mizoguchi admirer but avoided Ozu because I thought his films would be too subtle for my attention span. I remember being blown away by the beauty of the "Floating Weeds" photography and the emotional impact of its story. I hate to admit it but I've avoided watching "A Story of Floating Weeds" because it's silent. But after seeing your video, I'm planning to view it soon. Thanks again!

The cover of this one wasn't very well received by criterion fans. I can kind of see why, but I also understand the "meaning" behind it. Overall though, I think it could have had a more mysterious/engaging cover.

The song that plays on repeat (P.I.M.P. by 50 Cent on steel drums) was absolutely jarring in the theater and would be difficult to replicate at home, in my opinion. Great movie, though - can’t wait to watch it again. Keep up the outstanding work, Daisuke! My favorite channel on youtube by far.

Thanks for the informative comments. I think Floating Weeds is very underrated but it is so different from the other late color films by Ozu,in that it is set far from Tokyo and tbe usual plot of a father trying to marry off his daughter is entirely absent. There is no part for Setsuko Hara and Chishu Ryu has only a minor role. There is,for Ozu,some quite strong language and two scenes of violent behavior towards women which is quite unusual. But Ganjiro Nakamura is excellent in the lead role,as he would be in The End of Summer the following year. And I agree that the cinematography is stunning,in particular the use of reds. cenes of violent behavior towards women which is certainly u usual. But Ganjiro Nakamura is excellent in the lead role,as he would be in The End of Summer the fo..owi g yea r

Hello Daisuke! Great review as always. I’m always struck by your depth of insight into these films, you are able to make me realize things I hadn’t thought of in the days and weeks after my first viewing of this film. I would say the biggest thing that stuck in my mind after seeing this movie was the quote from David Lynch’s “Lost Highway” when Fred tell the detectives “I like to remember things my own way. How I remembered them, not necessarily the way they happened.” I think this can be applied when thinking of the nature of truth and memory within the context of this film, especially with regards to how Sandra perceives her relationship dynamics with Vincent. This also relates to your ideas of perception and how we perceive an event and the potential break between reality and what we think happened (although this begs the question of what “reality” truly is and whether there exists a reality outside of our own perception). Thanks for the video as always and take care Daisuke!

Sophisticated discussions of Ozu are always appreciated; thank you. Believe it or not, I actually like A Story of Floating Weeds more than the 1959 color re-make. I think it has mostly to do with what I perceive as better pacing, which the comparative run times may reflect. However, what could have made this particular video even better would be if the entire discussion was done with only Japanese title cards, along with English subtitles. But, maybe that's too time-consuming.
