Anita Cerquetti was a huge talent. She retired at the age of 30! I have read rumors concerning her early retirement, such as she entered a convent, which of course wasn't true. She was one of only two sopranos who were stand-ins for Callas, the other being Renata Scotto.

rispondo ad angelonicola6081 ma un po' anche a chi riesce a produrre un pensiero meno che luminoso, in sostanza un "retropensiero", di fronte alla potenza creatrice della Natura. Il fatto, più unico che raro in effetti, che una platea erompa in un tumultuoso applauso nel bel mezzo di un duetto (un duetto che è ben là da concludersi) e -cosa non trascurabile- di fronte ad una nota che non è l'appuntamento tradizionale con un acuto aspettato dal melomane ma una nota sì, certo- acuta ma -soprattutto!- inaspettatamente tonitruante per la spettacolarità del suono e della produzione vocale umana- già da sé la dice lunga sull'impressione che deve aver fatto ascoltare la Tebaldi al pubblico in teatro. Che poi si voglia alludere ad un declino precoce che di lì a poco avrebbe (e, sottolineo," avrebbe") offuscato le doti della cantante, tengo a ricordare che essa -in Otello nel 1964, nel 1966, nel 1967, cioè nove anni, undici anni e dodici anni dopo, è ancora insuperata. Certamente le mezze voci sono meno suggestive e meno praticate, forse i pianissimo sono meno sulle tre PPP e più sullo smorzato o sul piano (una sola P) ma la resa vocale, la suggestione e la portata della prestazione è di altissimo livello fino agli ultimi Otello del 1971 e del 1973, diciotto anni dopo questa recita di Firenze: e anche qui, nell'ultima registrazione gennaio 1973 al MET, pur in presenza di evidente fatica (Si naturali e Si bemolli che costringono l'artista a prender fiato immediatamente prima di emetterli) la resa vocale complessiva è di alto/altissimo livello. Del Monaco, invece, sì, è vero, ha continuato bene ancora per alcuni, pochi, anni ma già nel 1962 i suoni risentirono di grande pesantezza; va detto in ogni caso, che era nato nel 1915 e nel 1955 di anni ne aveva 40 e nel 1962 ne aveva 47. ovviamente, angelonicola6081, ti prego di prendere la mia considerazione assolutamente senza la più lontana critica......il tuo commento bello e rispettoso, riconosce ad entrambi gli artisti la loro grandezza..... Ho soltanto colto quell'ombra di rammarico per il fatto che nel futuro vicino avrebbero perso questa grandezza vocale..

One of the very few renditions that sings the final long "maledizione" as Verdi wrote it, instead of breaking it in two. Also the best phrased "immenso a tanto duol", along with Boninsegna's.

Do you have the 1941 excerpts of the Tristan led by Furtwängler in Vienna? I read that there are actually three segments from the Act II, revolving around the Love Duet. There’s already the “full” opera (1941/1943) here on KZfaq, but these aforementioned tracks are still missing. I have never enough Lorenz in Wagner! I would be curious to also hear his 1950 Metropolitan Walküre, alongside the well known 1949 one which is available for long, but this is more a wish than an actual request, since you don’t post complete operas. Edit: I'd add Hofmann, Schirp and Thorborg in my request since they sang only one or two arias of Wagner, respectively from Die Walküre, Tannhäuser and Parsifal.

Klytämnestra much more in tune, in fact singing, than we hear these days, when tey all scream out of tune. I know that the part is a horror, but in those days they could do it... but today...
